Sony Dreams of Profit With Morpheus Virtual-Reality Headset

The upcoming Project Morpheus headset for PS4 is 85 per cent complete, according to SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida.

It's successor or failure depends entirely on the price and content for it. If they launch it with a demo collection and a few other games and it's $200 it's going to tank.

If they launch it with a decent variety of games, and many games patch support into it at launch with a bigger list patching their game in the future, and it's $200 with the camera, then it has a good chance of being a success.

We'll see which one happens.

the thing is... if this thing became a "VR only" headset than yeah, it will fail, but...
if Morpheus comes to the market as a VR headset that is alson is a "Personal TV" that you can use whit your normal games/movies/shows (maybe even Playstation Now), than i can see a chance of sucess, not a big chance, but yeah, there is a chance.

It's the next evolution in gaming and if it doesn't work now then I can guarantee it will be tried again in the future some time when tech is far far better. I'm buying one day one as long as the price is $350 or less and there is content available that makes it worth owning.

And does this exec actually think cell phone components are gonna make it cheaper. Is this exec buying the same smartphones we all are because the last time I checked smartphones cost $500+.

Would love if they had demo's set up in various places to let people try it out. Though even if that did happen, I'm in Ireland so I can't see that happening here :(

I hope Project Morpheus is what VHS was to Betamax. Betamax being the Oculus. However, in today's Silicon Valley world Oculus is not a small competitor with FB behind it.

I just hope that Japanese companies would succeed. They always have their own unique style and approach compared to our western counterparts.

Let's see if the average consumer sees this.

The key word is "dreams." So many folks want this to work but it's just not going to. If they could keep people from getting nauseous then maybe it would have a chance. Problem is people will discover that they simply look goofy wearing it. Imagine a bunch of people sitting on a couch wearing those and looking in weird directions while talking to each other. The other factor is price. If folks can't afford both consoles what makes people think they will just magically find an extra let's say $250 for another assesory? It just doesn't work. No offense to the believers but that's cold hard facts. You may defend it to your last breath but it doesn't change the facts.

And what the hell do you care how you look while you're playing a game? I play in my underwear, if not naked; do I give a damn what you think I look like? And if everybody's sitting on the sofa wearing a headset, they can't even see each other; how could they look goofy?

As for price, we don't know what the price will be. Yes, some people won't be able to afford it, but some people can't afford one; does that mean nobody should ever make a console?

There isn't ONE "cold hard fact" in your entire comment. You assume a significant enough number of people will be nauseous and so affect sales, but you've got NOTHING to back that up. You suggest people will look goof, but that's a matter of subjectivity(and people will get used to it, just like they're used to people "talking to themselves" using a bluetooth headset), not a fact. And you don't even know the price, so you can't make ANY factual claims there.

I know people look goofy wearing these but I think the VR war will be won when VR Porn becomes a reality, but the nature of the beast is that most people fap alone so wearing a headset and looking goofy won't matter.

Eventually pc drivers and shit are necessary for this. Having this exclusively for ps4 makes designing for it hard and it makes it a lot less useful

If it has a direct feed in from a mini hdmi or something as long as the source was in a compatible standardised format I can't see anything but the occasional firmware update being necessary

That would definitely help level the playing field against oculus as far as the VR game goes. I'd like to be able to use this for my pc too so here's to hoping :)
