Shift to Sentinel: In Defense of Final Fantasy XIII – Part 1

Jacob Ross at Save/Continue writes:

"Shift to Sentinel is, simply put, my attempt to explain why a genuine appreciation of Final Fantasy XIII can be both a rational and defensible position. I won’t be wasting time with anecdotal platitudes like, 'I enjoyed the fighting' or, 'it was well-paced' or, 'he was cool'; my aim is to leave no doubt. Over the next four days, I’ll be exploring in depth the combat system, mechanic layering, and characters that form the game’s backbone."

There are things I like and things I dislike in this game, but this series looks promising. Not typical fanboy praise, but actual appreciation for the way it all plays out.

sonypsnow3627d ago (Edited 3627d ago )

JRPG "Died" during PS3 era. Ni no Kuni was Great. Consensus still believe it's dead, and wondering if PS4 can revive it.

Just because Ni no Kuni isn't Final Fantasy, most people believe JRPG is dead on PS3.

Ken Kutaragi, the father of PS3 & Cell Architecture, is no where near the PS4 development.

PS3 probably has nothing to do that what happened to Final Fantasy XIII.

Persona 5, coming 2015 on PS3. Maybe PS3 is still to difficult to program, or maybe it sounds nice.

Who want PS4's Emancipation? Keep up the demands!

iamtehpwn3627d ago (Edited 3627d ago )

There is always something about every FF which it excels at and does it job better in a particular area better than it's successors or predecessors. In all honesty, the only thing I can think of that FF13 does for that concept is literally--the "retry" button after a boss battle.

I know some saw it as making the game easier, but holy shit. Nothing was worse in older FF's than losing a battle after going a long period without saving and losing all your progress, especially from a fairly unexpected boss battle.

TM3333626d ago

I'm right there with ya LOL. To top it off, I don't have the extra time to waste on those types of death now in my older years.

Agent20093627d ago (Edited 3627d ago )

The legend goes someone actually enjoyed FFXIII series, yet it is not clear if that someone was even of this Earth.

Capt-FuzzyPants3627d ago

I thought the first one was actually very good. I don't think it deserves all the hate it got, I understand it, but still, it wasn't that bad.

The second one was okay, although the ending still doesn't make all the sense in the world.

Lightning Returns was not all that good imo. That story just wasn't good.

Tyrone_Biggums3627d ago

Many people hate on 13 just to hate on it. People just don't like change.

-Foxtrot3627d ago

People don't like shit change...ever thought of that

Tyrone_Biggums3625d ago

Just because you think it's shit or other people think it's shit doesn't mean everyone thinks it shit.

-Foxtrot3627d ago

I don't know how you can defend this game. It's anything but a Final Fantasy game, it ruined the series, was the start of it's downfall and was just a really bad game overall.

If it was called something other then Final Fantasy, reviewers wouldn't be so generous with the reviews.

Final Fantasy 13-2 and Lightning Returns just took it down and even worse path.

KingOfOldSkool3627d ago (Edited 3627d ago )

Contrary to whatever Square Enix was thinking heading into FF XIII, visually overproduced corridor RPGs are a direct path to irrelevance.

-Foxtrot3627d ago

It was basically...

Run down corridor A

Cutscene

Save

Run down corridor B

Cutscene

Save

Boss Battle

Cutscene

Save

Rinse and Repeat

HeavenlySnipes3627d ago

Although I agree that 13 was a tad bit on the left side of mediocre, I disagree with the statement "it wasn't a final fantasy game"

There shouldn't be a formula for a final fantasy game or else the series would have went the way of Dynasty Warriors or something.

Sure, there are the chocobos, the summons, the airships, a character named Cid etc that are in all the games, but each one was a somewhat unique experience.

FFVII, FFIX, and FFX (never played 8) all had a singular protagonist in which the story revolved around that was "special" compared to everyone else that had to foil the plans of the antagonist (who was related to the protagonist in some way; be it through blood or origin). The main protagonist also had a love connection with the main female in the players party. The plot of the games when stripped of their specifics boiled down to those points but the games weren't great because of them.

FFXIII was mediocre because their execution of the game's narrative and gameplay was poorly done and the characters didn't connect with a large majority of the audience that played it. They could have easily used the same world, concepts, and characters but make a good FFXIII by putting more effort in the aforementioned areas.

-Foxtrot3627d ago (Edited 3627d ago )

"There shouldn't be a formula for a final fantasy game or else the series would have went the way of Dynasty Warriors or something."

But there is a formula, it's what makes the game what it is. It's what we all loved, why change something which doesn't need fixing

What they had in the past games added to the reasons on why we fell in love with the games. The compelling characters, their developments, the story, the battle system etc

FF13 took away all of that, least in past FF games they add something small or try something new, not just take everything away which made the franchise so great.

FF13 was basically a watered down piece of crap to try and be more western because that's where Square Enix thought the money was.

The battle system was horrible and too easy
It also relied way too much on luck and button mashing instead of skill
Very linear
All the characters were either terrible or average at best
Lightning as a main hero was bland, depressing and boring
No good back stories for characters
The summons were transformers in disguise
Voice acting was worse then normal for a JRPG
No open world map
No classic victory fanfare
No airship to travel on
Magic was limited
No weapons to craft
No NPC's to talk to
No side quests
Point A to point B gameplay
Very repetitive
Story was just plain bad and confusing
Leon Lewis...a crappy X Factor contestant for the theme song
No good mini games

You take that all away then your just left with some JRPG Final Fantasy wannabe that's failed on all fronts to be a good game.

Take a look at Lost Odyssey and you'll see what Final Fantasy 13 should of been.

torchic3627d ago

everyone hold tight, Foxtrot is in a Final Fantasy article!

AronDeppert3627d ago

I never really could get into Final Fantasy.

DiscoKid3627d ago

It's not a bad game, just not what you expect from a Final Fantasy title. If it were simply called "Fabula Nova Crystallis" it wouldn't get much heat. FF games are about loveable and a few quirky characters. FF13 did not have this.

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus138d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda137d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B136d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic136d ago (Edited 136d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic136d ago (Edited 136d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981136d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot136d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda136d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot136d ago

Elda

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy135d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay136d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12138d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay136d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183138d ago (Edited 138d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB137d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
