Activision Admits 'Call of Duty: Ghosts' Didn't Outsell 'Black Ops 2' At Launch

It seemed like Call of Duty’s day-one sales record streak would come to an end when they were forced to premiere their new game, Ghosts, across six different platforms not all available at the same time. It was all but confirmed when the numbers Activision released the next day boasted of a billion dollars worth of units shipped, not sold. But now, they’re finally saying it out loud.

Wizziokid4249d ago

It could be one of two things;

1] Some people are just holding out for the next-gen version

2] People are finally getting tired of COD

FPSRUSSIA4249d ago

people that i know are waiting for the next gen to buy it.

HelpfulGamer4249d ago

Activision should have waited a bit more to improved their game some more.

FITgamer4249d ago

My friends that play COD are all impatient morons and are all doing the upgrade plan.

The_KELRaTH4249d ago

+ not very good reviews
using old engine even with new next gen kit
Cut n Paste sequences from previous versions

Finally a Battlefield game for next gen consoles that offers the full PC style game

Not included in PS4 bundles (no idea about X1 bundles)

While not major in themselves it all adds up and the next is that friends aren't playing it.

gaffyh4249d ago

Hopefully it's number 2 so they actually have to try next time. They've gotten too used to using the same mechanics and making hardly any changes.

aCasualGamer4249d ago

@Wizziokid

I hope it's number 2.

mattdillahunty4249d ago

http://indiegames.com/2012/...

assuming this chart is somewhat accurate, then that would mean (at the moment), the past two CoD titles have gone downhill in sales numbers.

if the Xbox One and PS4 versions fly off the shelves, however, that could definitely change things.

as it stands, this is music to my ears. this franchise either needs to die or undergo a serious makeover and drop the yearly release bullshit.

SilentNegotiator4248d ago

It's probably a combination of both the next-gen holdout and people getting tired. COD has to stop setting sales records at some point.

So they can finally build a new engine.

-Foxtrot4249d ago

Hopefully number 2

I'm scared how far they will go to get COD back into the spotlight...they arn't going to let it go without a fight even if they do things which look desperate.

I mean it could get them to make a new engine HOWEVER it will still play the same.

You can't polish a turd.

Grap4248d ago

Actually you Can polish a turd by eating healthy, for cod no one can polish It it goes beyond a turd.

WolfLeBlack4249d ago

I'll add a possible third reason: its been a pretty hectic period for games and people's budgets are tighter than ever.

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and Battlefield have both seen less sales than their previous outing.

Between the two things you mentioned and this one I think that pretty much accounts for it.

FPSRUSSIA4249d ago

i agree 100 percent with especially with Christmas coming up people are waiting it out or cant afford it at the moment.

boldscot4249d ago

It's always a hectic time period for game releases in the last quarter of the year. This doesn't affect COD any other year so it's most likely not the reason it's not selling this year.

oof464249d ago

It also didn't help Bf sales that word leaked it'll be $30 on Black Friday.

AngelicIceDiamond4249d ago (Edited 4249d ago )

@Wizzio realistically it comes down to no. 2

Next gen is holding back COD to some degree but ultimately I don't think people truly care this time around.

Despite it selling crazy amounts like it always does. The fact is sales are declining for this IP. The sales are simply not getting any better, they're slowly getting worse.

Nobody can deny that.

deathstriker4249d ago

3] Battlefield is gaining ground

ipach4249d ago

#2 for me. I got a copy and literally couldn't keep playing after an hour... on current gen, ghosts looks terrible. and though i like blitz and some of those other new modes, not enough to have spent $60 on it. i'd rather go back to good old black ops if i had to get my shooter fix in...

here's hoping enough people disagree with me and want it enough to buy my second hand copy for a decent price...

RedSoakedSponge4249d ago

well... you dont count in this since you actually bought the game lol.

pompombrum4249d ago

Cod fatigue for a lot of people that I know. I know some are waiting until they get next gen consoles but even then they are still on the fence as to whether or not to get this year's version.

Eyeco4249d ago

3) People are still playing GTA V, GTA online has finally started to pull it's socks up

Funantic14249d ago

I got it for the 360 but will get another copy for the X1.

JokerElite4249d ago

Most of my friends are getting tired of it, including myself.

You can only make basically the same game over and over before people lose interest. I don't plan on buying CoD until they make some big changes.

Essentially CoD games are becoming $60 map-packs over time.

boneso824248d ago

I think it's a bit of both Wizzi. I know a lot of ex COD fans who are buying battlefield, or even Killzone, instead this year. I'm one of them, but I'm not buying current gen, waiting for my shiny new PS4 for BF4

Lboogieskells4248d ago

Here's to Destiny washing that bad taste out of our mouth that is COD.

Gamer19824248d ago

So much for outselling GTA. I am glad of this Activision needed bringing back down to earth banging on that they would surpass GTA sales to become the biggest selling game once again. Wouldnt mind there big heads if they didnt sell a game that was exactly the same every damn year.

WolfOfDarknesss4248d ago

It could be one of Three things;

1] Some people are just holding out for the next-gen version

2] People are finally getting tired of COD

3) BF4

Neonridr4249d ago

Even if it failed to outsell its predecessor, the sales numbers will still be ridiculously high for this game regardless.

Majin-vegeta4249d ago (Edited 4249d ago )

One thing all us fanboys can agree on is COD sux.

Lol.

Hopefully its a trend and it stops selling.

-Foxtrot4249d ago

It would be pretty ironic if in the future COD is the game to unite all gamers

pompombrum4249d ago

And on that day, Microsoft will bring back DRM, internet checks and blow Sony out of the water and be labelled the saviors of gaming.

Jeedai Infidel4249d ago (Edited 4249d ago )

Majin-vegeta, Why? So that Battlefield can take Call of Duty's place and become stale and over-saturated because of a lack of competition. They both need to be good, to stir each company to make them better.

I do hope Ghosts under-performs financially if the game really is as crappy as they say, so it urges Activision to let the developers make exceptional games again.

I also hope that Titanfall and Killzone step into the ring with COD and Battlefield, more competition makes it better for ALL of us gamers.

Grave4249d ago

The shark has been jumped.

MightyNoX4249d ago

More like the bubble has burst. There's no shame in it. All things come to pass.

Burrito26a4249d ago (Edited 4249d ago )

The shark is in a net as the fonz jumps it on water skis.

Jeedai Infidel4249d ago

Thanks for the spit-take you just caused, luckily it was away from my TV and keyboard.

All Call of Duty Games Ranked from Worst to Best

BLG writes: "Call of Duty has to be the most recognizable franchise on the planet. They didn’t get that way by only making a handful of games.

COD has a long and storied career. Launching as a PC WW2 first-person shooter, Call of Duty has gone through numerous makeovers and been on just about every system. The series has gone through some serious highs and tragic lows. I’ll be looking at each Call of Duty game, the good the bad, and the ugly."

Vanguard better be at the fkn bottom. Can’t believe ppl haven’t eviscerated that game with all its lacking

Minimoth1227d ago

Yeah, it's close to the bottom. There are a couple of worse ones. Infinite Warfare definitely deserves its place.

KyRo1227d ago

There's a number a lot worse than Vangaurd. It's also a lot better than that car crash Treyarch released before it.

XbladeTeddy1227d ago

World at War is my favourite. Didn't know the N-Gage had a Call of Duty.

MadLad1226d ago

Same for me.
I was never huge into Call of Duty, but I sunk a lot of time into WaW.
Both the campaign and the multiplayer are on point. Wouldn't mind a remaster.

I quit on CoD for a long while. Though I'm the odd man out that actually really enjoyed the campaign for WWII, being I got it through Humble monthly way back when.

TheLigX1227d ago

I really enjoyed the Infinite campaign. Multiplayer... not so much.

Yppupdam1227d ago

I agree, The Infinite campaign feels more like it's own thing that they slapped the CoD name on. If it stood on it's own, (sans the CoD name) I think it could have been it's own scifi franchise. And a damn good looking game, to boot. I never bothered to play the multiplayer.

victorMaje1227d ago

MW 2019 apart from the desastrous file sizes is way better than AW.

MadLad1226d ago

That was one I grabbed for Playstation because it pretty much just came out during the Redbox purge of videogames, and I got it for dirt cheap.

It was great coming home to an update every night, and watching one game eat up almost half my console's memory.

Amplitude1226d ago (Edited 1226d ago )

Will get disagrees but Infinite Warfare campaign was really good. Decent story, set pieces were amazing and if it didn't have the CoD game on it I'm sure people would have been more into it. Advanced Warfare was alright too. Titanfall 2 was just 1000 times better than both but I enjoyed them for their campaigns. I literally barely gaf about the story I'm in it for the set pieces and 5 hours of being stoned watching cool nonsense happen if I'm in the mood to play a CoD campaign. If I'm looking for a deep plot I'm gonna go somewhere else.
Ghosts was the worst story-wise though lol that cliffhanger ending was so bs.

Also MW 2019 was sick and is one of the best CoD games in yeeeears not sure why it's so low on this dude's list. Campaign was great, multiplayer was great and Warzone was fun for a while. Over it now but shrugs.

Beat the Vanguard campaign too but I can't even remember a single thing about it other than that it felt like it was 45 minutes long. Might be the most forgettable thing I've ever played lol just fully erased from my brain

Wore implementation I've ever seen,.. guess it just does not work all that great on every engine

MarkyMark892188d ago (Edited 2188d ago )

Agree, but this gives me hope that one day Ray Tracing can be a software based feature and not require some type of proprietary hardware to achieve. Software will always outpace Hardware so it could happen, but I feel like its going to take a lot more time to achieve the same level that RTX has already shown glimpses of so far. Really just waiting for Cyberpunk to see if RTX is actually something viable. I think if anybody can truly showcase RTX Features it would be Projekt Red.

zeal0us2188d ago

Too bad it doesn't make Mankind Divided a better game.

starchild2188d ago

It doesn't need to, the game was already fantastic, imo.

zeal0us2187d ago

Human Revolution was a better game and not to mention longer.

isarai2188d ago

Reshade is not raytracing, its a screen space post processing effect. Thats like calling SSAO "global illumination"
