Battlefield 4 Creative Director: "Steam Machines are healthy for the console market"

Gustavsson believes that these new products from Valve will open up the market to explore new and better ways of consuming games.

"Basically for different ways of accessing customers and giving them possibilities of play, I think it is super exciting...

The only thing I know is that from five or ten years from now gaming and especially how you consume it won't look like it does today. I do think with streaming services and new input devices and so on, it wouldn't surprise me if there is less need of hardware and more on demand gaming experience."

More competition fuels innovation.

Kingthrash3603866d ago (Edited 3866d ago )

i just want to know prices...then i will know if its a console or a small but powerful pc. anything over a grand isnt a console imo.

@pandamobile just going off what the title says^^^

Pandamobile3866d ago

SteamMachines are not consoles.

MidnytRain3866d ago

I still don't understand the appeal of these things.

Pandamobile3866d ago

I don't see how you don't see. Competition is good. If Valve comes out and make a comparable or better device and service than the PS4 or One, that forces Sony and MS to innovate as well.

admiralvic3866d ago

In theory, yes, but not in practice. Simply being better doesn't instantly mean that companies will follow suit or that it will be remotely successful. This has appeared throughout game history and isn't likely to change.

Back in the Gameboy days, Sega released the GameGear, which was fully capable of using a rechargeable battery, back lit screen and color. It wasn't till AFTER the GameBoy Advance released that Nintendo started to match these features.

Likewise, original Xbox Live is better or at least on par with the current Wii U Nintendo Network, which is sad considering we're talking about a new console matching (in some cases falling short) to a service from 10 years ago.

This isn't exclusive to Nintendo being Nintendo either...

Xbox Live never really adopted a system like PlayStation Plus, though some might consider the short term "Games with Gold" them matching it.
Xbox Live hides apps like Netflix behind a paywall, where as the PS3/4, Wii U and even the Apple TV don't.
The Vita has a better quality touchscreen, graphics and more, though Nintendo didn't really have to meet Sony on that level to beat them.
I always found the Wiimote to work a lot easier than the PlayStation Move.
The Wii U gamepad was not a feature other companies tried to match. Sony had remote play first, so it looks like they're trying to push this feature now as the tech has finally caught up to the idea.
The only company who tried to match Club Nintendo was Square Enix, which was harder, but did offer better prizes. There is also Konami, which begs to be seen.

The list goes on, but a lot of ideas, even great ones like PlayStation Plus never forced other companies to innovate. So before we worry about what the Steam Box means for us, we need to see the price. If the thing doesn't sell, then it could be 100,000,000 x better than the PS4, Wii U and XB1 combined and it will simply be ignored. You also need to have a REASON to implement these changes to make it work.

darx3865d ago

Service wise they have both MS & Sony beat.

shahab913866d ago

Good. Steam machines, pc,ps4,ps3, x1,x360, psp, vita, 3ds, 2ds, wii, wii u, ouya etc. there is room for everyone. I love you all ^___^

Hufandpuf3866d ago

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!

A fight to the death I say!

Bolts3866d ago

The irony is, none of the Dice games will ever be on Steam Machines unless Origin goes Linux.

Aye just call Phil, i mean he somehow made Bobby Kotick's scandal disappear and gave him a few million dollar high five on the way out.

Cacabunga1d 1h ago

I wonder if it will be censored with some in game ads.

XiNatsuDragnel1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

EA about to go down like Activision and then Phil saves the day saying.this is good for the industry and consolidation will help create competition. /s.

ravens521d 5h ago

What's up with all these horny creeps. You gon be horny, fine. Just not at work take care of that shit before you go in. Rub one out if you have to. Don't be a creep at all. ESPECIALLY at work. But don't be one AT ALL.

Extermin8or3_1d ago

I mean part of the issue is that things transpired outside of work....

KwietStorm_BLM1d ago

You think deviants care where they are? Work sometimes makes it an even better situation for them because they can abuse their power.

mudakoshaka8h ago

Nerds think they are Gods when they are making video games.

NotoriousWhiz1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

"it seems that according to EA, given the events transpired outside of work between two adults, and the fact that once investigation has started that the alleged perpetrators didn’t do it again, the investigation is considered closed. [...] The victim still has to work with the people that harassed her."

Yep, EA is disgusting.

Extermin8or3_1d ago

I mean the fact stuff happened outside of work puts EA in quite a difficult position legally. These women don't seem to have reported the matter to the police which kinda ties EA's hands on what they can do. If they don't file reports of the crimes then yeah from EA's perspective it is stuff that happened outside of work. The only exception is the guy that apparently referenced things in the slack channel for work, spending on what he said proving it may be very hard and he may well be able to get away with plausible deniability. I don't like EA and I think these people need to be dismissed but without any legal action being taken, EA can't really do much without risk of being sued themselves for unfair dismissal etc.

Well, anything to make those shareholders happy, I guess. They're all that matters in this industry nowadays.

EA stocks haven't been profitable in over 5yrs. They better hope Take-two don't get the FIFA license lol.
