Comparing Next-Gen Specs; Three Keys to a Win of the Next Console War

Virtual Katz Writes: We have an idea, not of what the systems have in terms of spunk, but what wins the console war in the end? Seeing the specs above it doesn’t look like sheer horse-power is going to be enough to win it, considering that PlayStation and the Xbox are neck and neck to the finish. Well it comes down to three factors that don’t have anything in terms of the internal works. It is important to note that a power difference would be a factor, and it is slightly for the Wii U. The Wii U must find its niche like the Wii did of the last generation. While still possible that the track and processing of the circuits can make a difference when it comes to graphics and such, there isn’t enough here to suggest a difference. Hence the reason that sheer power wont win it for a company this time around. Instead other factors will be taken into account by gamers when making their final decision and the decisions of Microsoft and Sony may make an easy path to victory for Nintendo with them doing nothing more than sitting back and watching it all unfold.

Just a few small facts here. The strongest console has never won its console generation(no, the SNES was not "stronger" than the Genesis. It was simply capable of producing more colorful sprites).

The console with the lowest overall power has always sold the most.

Looks like it's going to fall down to aesthetics this gen...

It's all the same games coming out for each console give or take a few exclusives. Sony have some nicer quality first party titles while Microsoft have established some "Mario-esque" brands that everyone knows. The new consoles both look to be neck to neck in terms of what they'll be capable of so it'll really come down to the features they decide to implement in order to decide who's technically better than one or the other.

I think price plays a big factor as well... if Microsoft comes out of the gate with a price say $100-$150 cheaper than the PS4 then they will have a huge upper hand but I don't see them doing that. They'll probably match sony.

I don't get it. Are you saying that the PS2 failed because the Dreamcast was weaker than it?

Honestly I think its stupid using the excuse of the weaker system always winning to justify Wii U future dominance in the market. And price isn't a good reason either because even though the GameCube was cheaper than the PS2 it failed to sell more than it.

I believe that in regular circumstances the console that provides the best value and games usually wins. Unless of course (like the Wii) that consoles taps into a new market (known as the casuals in the Wii's case)

LibroRx your half right the genesis had a faster CPU and could display more sprites on screen and at a slightly higher resolution but had only a fraction of the memory for its inferior sound and graphics chips. Allround the Snes was superior from a hardware stand point because it was a far more balanced design it could display more than 4x as many colours and its sound quality was on a completely different level. Just because a console has a faster Cpu doesn't necessarily mean it's more powerful or even more capable a consoles like any machine is the sum of all its parts. Comparing the Genesis to the Snes is actually a lot like comparing PS360 to the Wii U both the PS360 have faster CPUs but like the Snes the Wii U has more memory a superior graphics card and a more efficient design. In the end though it comes down to the games and how devs take advantage of a consoles toolset.

The genesis could do things that weren't possible at all on the SNES without special chips to enhance it performance, like play 3D polygon games. Starfox need a special chip. The genesis didn't need one at all.

All fighting games were faster and more fluid on the genesis. Animations on everything were better on the genesis.

That was because the SNES could not calculate the positioning like the Genesis could.

Overall, the Genesis was far more powerful

People prefer the prettier picture, though. So the SNES won. Games like Star Cruiser and Duke Nukem 3D would make the SNES cough up it lungs to achieve half that frame rate. Virtua Racing was simply impossible on the SNES hardware.

Like I said both consoles had there strengths and weaknesses but overall the Snes had more balanced hardware for 2d gaming (thats what these systems were designed for) your videos are completely irrelevant, a better example would have been Lightening Force that game would bring the Snes to its knees. Every good console will have its excellent exclusives that take advantage of the hardware but the easiest way to judge a systems overall capabilities would be by comparing multi platform games released for both systems. Basically every game that was released on both systems was vastly superior on the Snes and only an ignorant biased fanboy would argue further are you one?

What about Neo Geo?

The 'least powerful/most popular' rule is very consistent..

A man knows who will have the most awesome exclusives. A man simply looks at this gen and where each company has gone the since 08 to see how dedicated they are to core exclusives.

Jek_Porkins2068d ago

Specs wont matter, the PS4 and 720 will both be similar in power, I think launch exclusives will matter, if both can get equally great third party support then it'll be an interesting generation.

Cost plays a big point, But SONY needs to show some massive titles, both hardcore and casual.

Wii u will just die off.

Ms will try and become a box that does everything, even controls the house, while lighting it up.
