Gabe Newell’s DICE 2013 keynote hints at Valve’s future plans

When Gabe Newell sits down to talk about something, you can pretty much guarantee that it will be both interesting and insightful. This was the case with the keynote talk he did today for the D.I.C.E. 2013 event in Last Vegas. The Valve boss touched upon a number of topics such as the company’s upcoming Steam box, the problems with cloud gaming, and the company’s historical models on how to design single and multiplayer games.

A seated Presentation how normal for this person.

MooseWI4111d ago

I think we can assume he means because of his weight, but I am just assuming.

kesvalk4111d ago

i think he means ppl of that caliber tends to do more than sit and talk about things, they try to sell their fish with a flashy presentation, where gabe just seated and talked.

very cool from his part i might add, cuz he feels more level-headed than the rest this way.

RuleofOne343 4111d ago

That this individual is so intelligent for his field, but is doing himself great disservice & health. Yes most of you will counter that he's happy or was tired, but no matter how you look at it he hurting himself.

Next Gen is the consoles LAST GEN!

Sony/MS will just be Publishers and no longer make Game Hardware as it will be easier and more profitable to just publish games on PSN or Xboxlive and just get them out to what ever device consumers are using.

6 months after the Next Gen consoles get released, Tablets/slates will be more powerful than the PS4/X720 so spending a Billion on R&D along side Hardware Manufacturing will no longer be viable for Consoles after this gen.

The Tablet Hybrid Desktop PC is taking over (See Sony Vaio Tap 20) and PC gamers will still have their upgradable boxes.

Gabe Newell is starting to look like Santa Clause! Gabe must be getting into character to deliver us Gamers the best present we could ever ask for, The Next Half Life Game.

yeahokchief4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

ehh i don't see it. ima stick with sony's console for the exclusives. but i will eventually buy a new pc to play strategy stuff like dota 2 if my current backlog ever runs dry.

if they went with their middle option they would have to have relatively equal game offerings. for example with GTA V only launching for consoles in 2013. their "console" would have to make this list for me to consider it as an alternate console. and then they'd also have to sprinkle in a few exclusives of their own and have their own awesome 1st party controller design that brings something to the table.

the more competition the better, but i can't see this selling more than a sony or ms console unless they're going to fund studios for a ton of exclusives.

aliengmr4111d ago

Valve is not releasing a console. They are working on ways to bring the PC to the living room.

Consoles are closed systems and mostly proprietary hardware. (nothing off-the-shelf in a console.) Pretty much the EXACT opposite of what Gabe was talking about.

"Steam-box" is a PC with a console form factor, that's all. And this is just one way they want do it. The other being in home streaming.

Steam-box = PC. PC has exclusives. Steam-box has exclusives. Clear?

FlyingFoxy4111d ago

New Left 4 Dead and HL3 please, will be upgrading my GPU as soon as Source 2 is announced XD. Gotta have them 60fps at 1080p!

peowpeow4111d ago

Hahaha valve games just don't feel like valve games at under 100fps. I love them

darx4111d ago

Can't wait for Steambox! Sony & MS take backseat this Gen.

Team Fortress: Source 2 and Portal 64 Fan Projects Shut Down by Valve Takedowns

Fan projects Team Fortress: Source 2 and Portal 64 have shut down after Valve intervened in their development.

-Foxtrot122d ago

First they open Steam up to more AI, now they are shutting down fan projects when at one time they used to support or even give the fans jobs.

Wonder what's going on with Valve at the minute.

rlow1122d ago

@Foxtrot
It’s called money plain and simple.

JEECE121d ago

I mean, that might explain the Team Fortress 2 thing, because Valve might bring that to Source 2 (though I'm not sure I'd bet on that), but I can't see how Portal 64 hurts them. If anything, it's more attention to the Portal and therefore Valve/Steam.

Giblet_Head121d ago (Edited 121d ago )

There's potential that Valve had already planned to bring Source 2 to TF2 officially after Counter Strike 2. It's been getting some renewed attention lately.

Inverno121d ago

You got Nintendo to thank for Portal64 being taken down. As for TF2, most likely it's due to the probability of Valve working on a source 2 port themselves. It's sucks but Nintendo are the biggest pricks in the business and not letting this drag out into a huge court drama is the best decision.

Valve Opens the Floodgates to Allow More AI Based Games on Steam

Valve has updated its stance on AI games on the Steam storefront, allowing creators to publish AI-created games.

Droppedez122d ago

AI is just another form of slavery for our computer brethren.

Barlos122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

Hell no. I want games that have been made by creative minds who have a passion for their craft, not a bot with a penchant for plagiarism.

BrainSyphoned121d ago (Edited 121d ago )

So instead of paying for an engine and assets to create a game they are paying for an engine and assets to create a game.

Valve Tells Players To Stop Inhaling Steam Deck Vent Fumes

Valve has officially warned against inhaling the Steam Deck vent fumes in an official response due to potential health hazards.

gold_drake148d ago

my god, people are so dumb these days.

shinoff2183148d ago

I read the headline to my girl and she even reacted wtf is wrong with people. People wild

Notellin145d ago

I feel bad for her that she can't read and needs you to do it for her. Keep your head up!

shinoff2183145d ago

Notellin, I've been teaching her 😘

Jin_Sakai146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

This generation is about dumb as it gets.

frostypants146d ago

Huffing things isn't new to be fair.

SavageFlamingo146d ago

This has nothing to do with generations. It’s not a stupid challenge or anything. People just happened to smell it while they were playing. The steam deck exhaust is easy to smell without even trying. Just playing it you’ll smell it in the air around you.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro146d ago

"tHiS gEErAtIoN"
It's every generation, today you just see it more clearly thanks to internet.

k2d146d ago

To be fair, I loved the smell of glue, gas and certain plastics as a kid (new disc cartridges/new hardware, anyone?)

Si-Fly145d ago

Instruction manuals for me, best smell ever 😂

crazyCoconuts146d ago

I actually take a whiff of it once in a while, it's funny that it smells so good lol

DarXyde146d ago

Tide pod fiasco all over again

Felix_Argyle_Catbro146d ago

"tHeSe DaYs"
People have been just as dumb in the past, you just see it clearly now thanks to the internet.

gold_drake145d ago

thanks for that .. insight. ha.

rlow1145d ago

Well good thing about dumb people, they play an important part in human history. How else do we know which plants, animals and foods ar dangerous? Dumb people! They pay the price so the rest of us don’t have to. Lol

FinalFantasyFanatic145d ago

Honestly, I'm not even surprised considering some of the people I come across these days, inhaling fumes would explain a lot of things.

Wow people will huff anything nowadays some people just have way too much time on their hands.

Abnor_Mal146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

Another reason to love the PlayStation Portal, no chance of breathing in noxious vapors.

Get a Steam Deck they said, to which I reply, what are you high?

KwietStorm_BLM146d ago

Were you high when you typed this?

Abnor_Mal146d ago

Sorry bud no Steam Deck here.

146d ago
FinalFantasyFanatic145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

Even the Steam Deck does streaming better than the Portal (they portal is capped for streaming for some reason, whereas the Steam Deck isn't).

Neonridr145d ago

imagine pretending a glorified streaming device is better than a stand alone unit that can also, stream.

Stand by for the 'gaming kills' articles.
Que Halloween movie theme.

Nucleux146d ago

What does it smell/taste like?

Barlos146d ago

Better than the Switch cartridges is my guess.

Just to be clear, I've never licked a Switch cartridge, nor have I inhaled my deck's fumes.

Profchaos146d ago

Same never licked a switch cart I've always been worried more about where it's been than the taste but

Fluke_Skywalker146d ago

It smells good, that's the problem lol. When I first turned mine on I noticed it 😅
Better stop sniffing it then.

Barlos146d ago

I've had my deck for over a year, I've never been compelled to put my nose near the vent for a good lungful 😂

crazyCoconuts146d ago

I can't explain it... It smells...new

SavageFlamingo146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

Kind of like cheap bacon cooking. Even cheap bacon smells good.
