Kotaku: Valve Is Bringing Steam To Your TV Today. Watch Out, Consoles.

Today, Valve will launch the beta of Big Picture mode, a version of Steam designed for your television. That's right. The de facto central hub of PC gaming is now designed to run while you're lounging in your living room—and with a controller, no less. I've tried out Big Picture. It's sleek, intuitive, and groundbreaking in several ways.

"watch out, consoles"..... really? common you have to get real here consoles arnt going anywhere for alongtime yet. Im a console and pc gamer so i do use steam and yes its a great platform but i do prefer XBL, then you look at the games for instance steam does have a huge choice but they dont have all the huge AA exclusives consoles have, although their choice of indie games is rather nice :P.

Basically in my opinion can stream compete in the home with consoles? yes, will it replace consoles? no.

This upcoming gen is really the end of videogame consoles. From a business standpoint is expensive nowadays to sell a piece of hardware at a loss.
Now Big Picture Mode will not replace consoles but it will open up the PC gaming market even more. With this is possible that some not all console gamers may switch to a gaming PC.

It's been the end of consoles since the 90's. First it was laptops, then mobiles, then handhelds, then browsers, then smartphones, then cloud, then iPad, then Steam.... basically it'll be the end of consoles for as long as sites need hits.

In other words, they aren't going anywhere.
Try to play Planetside 2 or primal carnage on your console.

Xbl and AAA = 90% third party.

Even xbl is not exclusive to xbox.
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Xbox can't give you free multiplayer or free cloud saving or free dlc that is on steam & steam workshop content. You even have to pay for Minecraft skins. Why pay for twitter, Bing & youtube?

They killed killer instinct, promot kinect as there there #1 & added perks to there best (competitive) shooter.

They are trying to compete with apple market and nintendo's casual market at the same time so imagine where core gaming will be for xbox in the future.

MS <3? O_o

Once the next red dead comes to pc and it will xbox is not needed. Unless you like the repetitive rotation of the same games.

Not saying you shouldn't prefer xbl but I am just saying it's obviously not the best service and yet they charge for it.

PC games basically consist of FPS, MMOs, and RTS games. The real single player story driven content are present on consoles. That is what the PC lacks and always will lack because PC gamers are in general multiplayer oriented and therefore pirate (something all PC gamers should be hanged for doing) single player games because they'll "only play it once." Read Dead won't be on the PC or at least it won't be released at the same time as consoles. R* and Take Two aren't foolish so you can kiss your "Once the next red dead comes to pc and it will xbox is not needed." pipe dream good bye.

Consoles have nothing to worry about.

I can easily see Valve put together a version of Linux + Hardware setup and launch it as mid-High range parts at a decent price.

Fixed hardware question makes me wonder if Valve wants to put out a Linux ARM platform. I don't believe ARM will truely be taken seriously as a PC platform until end 2013 or whenever NVIDIA launches the first PC with 64-bit ARM CPU at desktop level performance.

Microsoft however has slapped Linux away from ever being put on a system with Windows 8 on the ARM hardware as a secondary OS. http://hothardware.com/News...

This could be Valve's aim with Linux support shift. Linux ARM Steam platform + Hardware? Could Valve announce something in the next year? Maybe, but it might not come out until 10 years later with Valve time.

I hope this works great. i want to get into pc gaming, but after failing so miserable at trying to run pc games in the 1990's, i gave up. so hopefully this will give me a second chance.

That's exactly what happened to me in the nineties, got viruses, malware for running emulators from atari to snes even genesis games. It was a nightmare back then to play PC games. Now is just point and click play.

So consoles are going away.
Its amazing that people forget that consoles originally came into existence because PCs were both too expensive and too complex for the average consumer. That's changed to a degree, they're more accessible at least, so of course consoles are eventually going to be pushed aside.

Can a 12 year old kid play a PC game as easy as he can a console game? Until that happens consoles are not going anywhere. (12 yea rold being my brother)
DudeJets  +   802d ago
Well my 5 year old can play games on a pc just as easily a console. So maybe your 12 year old brother is lacking a bit in mentality.

This is nothing new, I have been playing steam on a 46" Sony Bravia for a few years now, with a 360 PC controller. The only difference is the simplified interface.
Moncole  +   803d ago
This isn't a console, its just a mode that makes it easier to use Steam on a TV.

Sounds good I'd definately would give it a try if they simplify the experiance so that a guy or girl that isn't computer friendly can use it.

Something, the consoles have been doing for years

dont see whats so great about steam myself, dosent use the regular flash player, the demo section is a joke trying to navigate back and forth, dosent close when you try and close it

hopefully this will be a big improvement
NastyLeftHook0  +   803d ago
im all for valve bringing steam to your tv set, but consoles are not going anywhere.
mochachino  +   803d ago
That interface looks pretty amazing for TVs actually, especially the typing interface. It's what the 360 dash should have been like (about games not ads).
NeoBasch  +   803d ago
Thank you, Valve. This is exactly what gaming needs right now. It'd be nice to have some fixed, yet upgradable, hardware so I wouldn't always have to use my computer, but this is a great first start. Looking forward to see what you guys do with it.

The lotus flower virtual keyboard is truly innovative. We can finally get past the stupid qwerty keyboards. Its only a matter of time though before gaming architecture is embedded in TVs and people use their tablets/cellphones/touchscreen displays as their controllers.

What Rock have you been living under? You can do All this RIGHT NOW! Just hit Google and you will see all this being done now.

I have used iPhone as a controller many many times while playing games Streamed or Embedded on a TV.

Also many upscale hotel chains have been doing this for years!

I know, I did say AND. Both have not happened yet. I meant more in the manner that it will become mainstream and a lot of games will start supporting it, even hardcore ones. I'd love to see a controller one day that can raise the surface of the touch screen to form a bump that can mimic a button on a controller. Then everything can be completely abstract. That would be ideal.

As a PS3 and PC gamers who became PC this year i have to say the transition from console to PC is not easy, to the point that i see many people not wanting to bother themselves with. Much mroe how will kids game? Im 20 years old but i dont think my little brother will switch to PC gaming since he is only freaking 12 so he uses my PS3. That plus my room sadly doesn't have the space for a desk so i have my PC connected to my HDTV. Consoles simply CAN"T disappear until basic PC gaming can be just as easily accessible as consoles.
