Yeah the ps3 has been out selling xbox 360 for a while now but they need to do it by more.Only outselling xbox by 20-30k will take an eternity for them to catch up,they need to start selling 80-100k+ units more than xbox a week in order to catch up.

For the 4 weeks VGChartz have reported in Jan, PS3 has outsold 360 worldwide by roughly 145K (IF you believe VGChartz numbers). But that's just hardware, software it's still not selling anywhere close to 360 # (Worldwide).

The reason why software isn't selling because the PS3 owners are a very diverse crowd. Heavenly Sword which wouldn't have sold well on another system sold well on PS3. Notice that in Heavenly Sword you don't shoot a gun. Some people that own PS3s just don't like shooters. Look for the games that involve very few gunplay to sell well on PS3.

The American sales for this month are really dry. The Japanese sales gap between PS3 and 360 almost alone makes up for the American sales gap. As of now it's not really looking to good for either system. The only time either system sells well is when there's a good game that is released but when there are no games the sales just drop.

Resistance is a launch game and it was the only good game until Motorstorm came out so it had 4 months for being the only PS3 game worth getting. And it isn't the most successful PS3 game because Motorstorm was a pack in for the 80GB. And if Resistance was on 360 it would have sold more because there really wasn't a good FPS shooter on 360 after its first year either.

This petty lead PS3 has been having is MSFT's fault for not talking or boasting about their future offerings *the keep your mouth shut policy* isn't going to work this year and never again this generation. No one has heard anything about the 360's future this year.

I know they think what they have to show will make up for the sale's they're losing but the PS3 is winning the hearts and minds by default due to keeping gamers in the dark about the 360.

Hyping/Boasting & delivering is the only way any company will win the war for now on.

However, other then the huge classic titles, a lot is shrowded in mystery for the PS3 as well. KZ2, Wardevil, heavy Rain, LA Noir and some otheres come to mind. Both companies have been doing rather well at keepings things udner raps. I think the PS3 has hit a point where they have games, and the price is at a fair level. More and more of the PS2 fanbase is going to come over. I don't know if there is going to be a clear winner this gen unless, the Wii continues it's pace.

MGS and FF are big franchises and MS knows they will sell a few PS3s but the counter is, why buy a PS3 just for MGS4 and FF 1,000,000 when we have 3 RPG's (FABLE2) and 3 stealth action (Splinter cell) to choose from, and... while your at it play our huge library of games. Sony does have those two heavy hitters but thats about it the rest are unproven franchises. MS has NG2, Fable 2, Splinter Cell, Halo Wars and Gears 2 (we know it's comming) then they have some new IPs (with lots of buzz) like Alan Wake, Frontlines and Too human, and lets not forget what MS has up their sleeve as they have said themselves. Lots of PS3 fans assume MS and Nintendo will just roll over and have nothing to combat the PS3 lineup but we all know what you get when you "assume".

You have a great point, but I see lots of disagrees and I don't think they are unwarrented. You seem to discredit and anything positive about the PS3. That was alot easier to do a year ago but in my eyes the 360 isn't even close (Now) to the value of the PS3. If there seems to be alot of news about the PS3 it's because the system is stacked with options. News about gaming/Movies/DL content, and almost everything is relavant to Sony's system. We are on a gaming site but gamers also have a huge interest in most things multy media. You shouldn't be so quick to discredit what Sony is doing. It's ironic that MS's argument is about choice to the people. Ironic that I find I have more chioce to do what I want to on Sony's console.

So that you can put 5 or 6 games on your 40gb? Lets not forget most of good PS2 games are 5 or 6 gb like FF and GOW so i really dont this that is the case.
They want people to keep on PS2 while it is still alive or otherwise there would be 10s of millions used one at retailers and thats where Sont loses by people not buying new PS2 but instead used ones.
Sony is most likely making close to 100 bucks on every PS2 sold, so why jeopardize this`?

I don't think they'd be too worried if these figures are reasonably accurate, roughly 18000 units isn't much when you consider that the 360 has been out for a longer period, PS3 is starting to gain momentum because it's now getting more interesting, games like Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank are showing what the machine is capable of but the 360 has a better selection of games at present and XBL is still superior to PSN, doesn't matter if Live is having problems, PSN needs to sort out the in-game messaging, chat, etc, before it can rival XBL.

In the end PS3 will outsell 360 but the gap will have decreased and MS will have made more of a name for themselves in the console market, all in all competition is great for us gamers, let the fanboys worry about who's better.

Let's wait until Metal Gear and other PS3 games are released and we will know if the PS3 will every catch up to the xbox 360 install base... you see... 18K a week lead only equals to 936,000 a year.
How many years the PS3 would need? it's about time if one considers that the PS3 cost less than an xbox 360 elite that the PS3 should be selling at least 3 times more than the xbox 360. at that rate it would take the PS3 5 years to catch up.

Maybe when games like Metal Gear are release than we see the PS3 selling 3 times more than the xbox 360 in order for it to catch up in only 1-2 years.

its january... arguably one of the lowest months for sales. One should use ratios and percentages, you will see that that gap should widen (according to ratios and trends) in the months that sell more consoles.. this should be an interesting year.

(That's on avg. of 50 K a week, however it'd be jsut as wrong to assume just cause PS3 outsold on avg. 50 K a week, that'll it'll continue to do so every week).

Yes that makes sense. At this rate the PS3 will take forever to catchup but Sony dosen't only have MGS. It has FF and GT which are perhaps even bigger games to the PS fanbase than MGS. So imagine having like 3 Halo effects and then GOW3,ICO 3 and R2 to top it off. MS will seriously need more than just a price drop to counter what Sony will dish out to the competion from now on. Yes MS will do their best but as i said before. Its going to be really tough for MS to win over the PS crowd that haven't migrated yet.

#1 It's outselling the 360 by approx 80k in a month with NO major game releases. As titles such as GTA IV, DMC4, & MGS4 come out... it will definitely be outselling it by more than that.

#2 In addition to being outsold in the other major regions, the 360 is also losing its gap in NA which could mean an exponential momentum shift in the PS3's favor if this trend continues. The real problem is that after two years on the market and a price drop, the 360's sales are decreasing instead of increasing... which is the same problem analysts noted at this time last year. Another price drop and some AAA titles may correct this... but it will depend on timing and Sony's response... Especially since Sony is percieved to hold the crown when it comes to exclusives this year.

#3 The PS3 is not competing with the 360 Elite. The highest selling 360 console is the premium sku, which remains to be cheaper than the PS3 at the moment.

#4 The PS3 is not likely to overtake the 360 until 2009 no matter what releases this year, holiday 08 will be the real turning point... this is just the shift of momentum.

The PS crowd are casual gamers, Sony will have to win over that crowd thats already migrating to the Wii platform. PS2 was the popular trend console with the masses the Wii is winning back those gamers the PS first won over from Nintendo originally.

The PS crowd are mostly mainstream gamers which are gamers that are somewhere between the extrems. Main stream gamers i classify as gamers that really don't enjoy online playing as they are mostly from the 16 bit and 32 bit console era.Mainstream gamers are gamers that enjoy variety of games including platformers which seems alot of hardcore don't like. While the x360 go for the Extreme hardcore. The wii is going for the extreme casuals while the PS3 appeals to all.

Blade is right. 18K a week is not that much but it wasn't long ago that the 360 was crushing the PS3 2 to 1. The tides are shifting and if the PS3 continues building momentum it could easily pull away and increase the gap.

There are a lot of PS2 gamers who are waiting for their favorite franchises before buying a next gen console and many of those are going to be exclusive to PS3. There may even be a few 360 owners who will buy a PS3 to play GT, MGS4, KZ2 or FFXIII. That could swing the scales in favor of the PS3 by quite a bit in 2008.

I have never taken VGC to be gospel. The reason being VGC (like other number trackers) use past sales trend data compounded with retail sales data to get their numbers. About a month ago, VGC openly said they only receive 1% of the retail sectors data (NPD has 60%). 2008 was supposed to be the year of the ps3 but January was clearly Nintenduary which didn't surprise me the least bit. Nintendo is trying to up supply again around April so it is only going to get worse for PS3/360 if they are actually thinking they could take 1st place. Nintendo is still selling out and they have been making about 70 bucks profit per console sold since launch and making even more than that as manufacturing costs have went down over the last year + . They can drop the price as much as need be and at will. We have not even found how much the Wii could actually sell in one week as it is constantly sold out. Will the approximate april supply increase even be enough to find out what the Wii is really capable of. Who knows but should be interesting. Thats ok neither 360 or ps3 is going to catch wii and they can fight for second place although I think ps3 will pass 360 within 2 or 3 years. Someone else said ps3 would have to outsell 360 by 200,000 a week to catch it by the end of this year and it only outsold 360 by 18,000 this week so hard telling how long it will take. I have not been following PS3 vs 360 real closely so I dont have a lot to comment on that aspect of the console war. Only Wii/DS Dominance. I hate to break the news to u but the only reason MS has the lead is because they chose to fool the consumer and sneak in the trojan horse into about 6 millon homes, 13 millon, the sales numbers are not acurate because of so many console failures. 1- Bill buys XBOX 360 from best Buy with 2yr PRP. 6 months later Bill's XBOX 360 has RROD he takes it back to Best-Buy they return his broken console and replace it with a new one in this step they scan the bar code and serial # which is POS {POINT OF SALE} and counted as a new console sale making for inflated sales. Yea MICROSOFT knows how to take advantage of the gaming world they knew from the start this console hard serious flaws but chose to ignore them so they could beat SONY to the market, MS knew they would only win the first 3 or 4 yrs but thats all they wanted. I would say June , MGS4 will be as big a month for PS3, as Halo 3 was for 360 last year.

Even bigger though will be the months when FF13 and FF13VS release.

March also will be a big Month for PS3 with GT 5 Prologue. I see the next 6 months all as very good for Sony just from what looks to be released in those months. MS has some good games ahead too just not as many bigguns as far as we know so far.IMO

However, the other two territories seem to have a ho hum attitude towards it. Thats a shame. But Sony should release more colors outside of Japan. As for the PS3 Sony might need a price drop to reach their goal of 11 million units by the end of the fiscal year(march 31th). They need to average 175,000 units sold a week to get there and they are coming up short by about 30k units a week.

If it weren't for Japan, 360 would be ahead. Japan really isn't that important in the long run. There are plenty of gamers in the rest of the world. A number of games in Japan don't reach the States or other countries and vice versa. The markets are different. Halo sold 8 million with little to no help from Japan

There's one point here EVERYBODY is missing...it doesn't matter who's ahead, as long as they keep making games for all the systems right? Whether PS3 or 360 is in the lead doesn't matter. So why are these numbers ever important? Sony will not have the same success they did with the PS2. It just won't happen. Im am a diehard PS3/Playstation fan.. but unless some serious price cuts are made the Wii will become the new PS2.. PS3 and 360 will continue fighting for scraps.. SSBB, Mario Galaxy, Metroid, Zelda, Mario Kart, and a future Starfox are All system sellers.. or potential system sellers.. Tho PS3 does have the best line up of 08.. By FAR..
