Iwata: Xbox Live and PSN are too far developed for Nintendo to catch up

CVG:Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes that the numerous years Sony and Microsoft have spent developing their online platforms has left Nintendo behind and that rushing to "overcome or catch up" to them wouldn't be a smart strategy.

That's non-sense, they could certainly try harder.

All they need is a unified friends list, user accounts, competent online games shop, security and social interaction. All that has been confirmed. It might not be as fancy (as if live and psn are fancy) but it'll be solid. He said rushing to overcome them isn't smart, nothing about no effort.

killerhog4336d ago

Sony was able to catch up and surpass XBL, so I don't know why Nintendo can't do the same? Sounds like they want pity so people won't compare then to current services, or an excuse for them to not even try.

KwietStorm_BLM4336d ago

People are still saying PSN surpassed XBL? Please stop with this. All jokes aside, please stop it.

JsonHenry4336d ago

Lol @ surpass XLive!!! Every console has its strength. I fear that Live is king of online. Although Sony certainly gets the most improved award this generation. Next gen though I dont think there will be a difference between Live and the PSN.

Hicken4336d ago

PSN surpassed Live when it became free. That is to say: from the start. And there's really no comparing the value of Live to PS+, either.

Still, I can kinda see where Iwata's coming from. Sony and Microsoft have at LEAST a generational lead on Nintendo. And while they should OBVIOUSLY put forth their best effort, it's probably not smart to aim for the same level as their competitors right out of the gate.

GraveLord4336d ago

Yeah, they should. But just copying everything Sony/Microsoft have done isn't the answer.

Wii U needs to have a unique online service.(and needs to be kid-friendly)

saladthieves4336d ago

Those were my thoughts exactly. They get points for honesty, but this also means that they need to up their game really quick.

The way Iwata puts it is like as if Ninty has no chance of catching up to PSN and Live even if they tried. They certainly must if they want to compete.

kneon4336d ago

Sure they could catch up, but it would take a few years and would require an immense outlay of money and resources. And it's not like the others are standing still so they have a lot of work ahead of them.

Spenok4336d ago

Agreed, this is just lazy thinking at its finest.

Well, at least Nintendo is being honest about the quality of PSN/XBL..

CouldHaveYelledUiiW4336d ago

They usually are honest, so honest that it can make you wonder why they are being honest toward people who don't show them any respect. But that's why I love them.

Warj4336d ago

Hate to argue, but they've been caught in several lies since the massive success of the Wii, and refusing to give answers to questions they don't like doesn't strike me as honest. However, Nintendo and its staff have some of the best and most creative people on the planet and people respect that. However, I fear a lot of that respect comes from the company's history more so than its current business practices.

CouldHaveYelledUiiW4336d ago

@ Warj
Please tell me what lies have they been caught telling?

And current practice is WiiU, which should far more than those other consoles.
And the DS and 3DS that sold more than those other systems.

LOL_WUT4336d ago

Hopefully whatever they have now they'll upgrade maybe through updates? Kinda like what Sony did with PSN over time.

guitarded774336d ago

I'm certain they will. I don't know how much on board memory the Wii U will have, but even the basic XBOX 360 Slim has 4gb memory for OS, so Nintendo will have something.

One problem they have according to an article from yesterday is they are staying with the online codes. If they want to compete, even if coming from behind, they have to use user names.

Bagogames4336d ago

Whose fault is that? It's Nintendo's fault. They were too busy making games appealing to older people than focusing on where the money is in hardcore gaming.

PopRocks3594336d ago

Then why did the Wii outsell two core consoles for almost an entire generation?

Bagogames4336d ago

I don't know maybe because people are crazy and like to buy 10 year old Gamecubes painted white with a strapped on motion sensor! :P I kid of course!

NYC_Gamer4336d ago

Nintendo fans and the casual crowd helped the Wii become successful...

the worst4336d ago

it mite has outsold it then
but now there going to paid for it now

PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!PRICE! PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!PRICE!. ....

That answer your question quite easily. If not the price, it would have bombed oh so hard.....can ANYONE imagine Wii selling at 300USD+?

Well damn, very interesting to hear it from the horses mouth.

Reading the article, it's obvious it's going to be a while before we get a competent online network since Iwata say's he doesn't want to rush into it. Explains why we didn't hear of the Nintendo Network at E3.

This quote is also telling "I think that what we see in terms of online gaming networks on existing dedicated gaming platforms is not particularly well suited to the approach Nintendo has taken".

Nintendo is making it more difficult than it needs to be. All gamers want is a competent online network to play with their friends in. Just make a network similar to PSN or Xbox live and be done with it.

Zelda Replay: Majora's Mask

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Is Ocarina of Time as legendary as I remembered it? For the most part, yes. In spite of a handful of missteps — a few obtuse puzzles, some tedious backtracking, and a clunky stealth sequence — I don't believe the last 23 years have been unkind to it. Ocarina remains a brilliant example of the medium, a landmark game that shaped the future of its own franchise and 3D gaming in general. After more than two decades it retains its inventive dungeon design, challenging puzzles, dynamic combat, wistful storyline, unforgettable music, and empowering open-air freedom. I feel confident calling it one of the greatest games of the fifth generation, even if I'm no longer prepared to list it among the five best games ever made."

Pure unadulterated fun. They don't make them like this anymore...especially not the triple A industry.

Wii U games that still haven't been ported to Switch

The Nintendo Switch is potentially nearing its lifespan, and several Wii U games haven't found their way over as ports yet.

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga6d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

Profchaos6d ago

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas6d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj6d ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Chocoburger6d ago

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
