Maybe the lack of "Dead Space" in Dead Space 3 was a problem?

spicelicka4085d ago

strategy is take a shit on everything

knowyourstuff4085d ago

This is all written by someone who has never actually played any of the games, so he's just drawing at straws trying to figure out why Dead Space 3 didn't sell.

As someone who has played the first two games, and highly schooled on the reception of Dead Space 3, the reason Dead Space 3 didn't sell well is due to the fact that EA tried to dilute the franchise and make it less survival horror and more of an action game in the vein of Gears of War. By including human enemies that shoot back at you, cover shooting, absolutely no horror elements, no tension, no scary moments, no enemies coming out of the walls, ceilings and floors, you have a watered down game targeting the tard Call of Duty crowd.

Co-Op was included for no other reason than the fact that EA did a poorly designed study that showed some people were too scared... of Dead Space of all things. So EA decided to try and market to a larger audience by making an already barely-scary game even less scary by including Co-Op so you would never be alone. This also added to the game being more action and less survival.

The problem came with the fact that the already established market of horror game fans was abandoned with this new watered down action game. The marketing problem came with fact that the game was marketed as a HORROR game, the new face of HORROR. Action fans weren't interested in a horror game, so they didn't buy it as that is how it was marketed. Once horror fans bought the game they cried foul as the game was nothing more than a lame action game. If EA had just been honest and said "Come buy our game absent of any horror, suspense or survival elements, just point and shoot and waves of enemies that do nothing but rush you in plain sight", you would've had the Call of Duty tards at least interested in the game. Instead EA pretended DS3 was something it was not, and it was that betrayal that destroyed people's interest in the game. If you asked a single person who might've been interested in an action game whether they knew DS3 was an action or horror game, they would have no clue, or would think it was a horror game, something they aren't necessarily interested in.

EA=marketing fail.

By making it more "accessible" to a different crowd, they just alienate the fanbase and then not get any new sales due to their targeted audience being people who only play Call of Duty, FIFA or whatever. They only buy those games, they will not buy another game.

Also, they could have made a nice profit if they didn't spend millons on advertisements. Sure, have a few but don't advertise on every single channel for a few weeks. People who want your game already know about it and will buy it.

I cant imagine anyone looking at dead space 3 and saying

"oh wow. a third person action game. what an original, novel, innovative concept. we definitely dont have enough of those. but do you know what we do have too much of? well paced, atmospheric, survival horror games. man, that genre is so overdone today. what we really need are some gears of war wannabes."

seriously EA. what were you thinking?

Report: Sexual Misconduct Investigation Conducted at EA, Suspects Named and What They Did Revealed

EA senior staff has been investigated for sexual misconduct involving female coworkers, and these said people have been named publicly.

isarai2d ago

Aye just call Phil, i mean he somehow made Bobby Kotick's scandal disappear and gave him a few million dollar high five on the way out.

Cacabunga1d 20h ago

I wonder if it will be censored with some in game ads.

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

EA about to go down like Activision and then Phil saves the day saying.this is good for the industry and consolidation will help create competition. /s.

What's up with all these horny creeps. You gon be horny, fine. Just not at work take care of that shit before you go in. Rub one out if you have to. Don't be a creep at all. ESPECIALLY at work. But don't be one AT ALL.

Extermin8or3_1d 20h ago

I mean part of the issue is that things transpired outside of work....

KwietStorm_BLM1d 19h ago

You think deviants care where they are? Work sometimes makes it an even better situation for them because they can abuse their power.

mudakoshaka1d 4h ago

Nerds think they are Gods when they are making video games.

NotoriousWhiz2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

"it seems that according to EA, given the events transpired outside of work between two adults, and the fact that once investigation has started that the alleged perpetrators didn’t do it again, the investigation is considered closed. [...] The victim still has to work with the people that harassed her."

Yep, EA is disgusting.

Extermin8or3_1d 20h ago

I mean the fact stuff happened outside of work puts EA in quite a difficult position legally. These women don't seem to have reported the matter to the police which kinda ties EA's hands on what they can do. If they don't file reports of the crimes then yeah from EA's perspective it is stuff that happened outside of work. The only exception is the guy that apparently referenced things in the slack channel for work, spending on what he said proving it may be very hard and he may well be able to get away with plausible deniability. I don't like EA and I think these people need to be dismissed but without any legal action being taken, EA can't really do much without risk of being sued themselves for unfair dismissal etc.

Well, anything to make those shareholders happy, I guess. They're all that matters in this industry nowadays.

EA stocks haven't been profitable in over 5yrs. They better hope Take-two don't get the FIFA license lol.

EA Japan Exec Criticises Japanese Ratings Board

An executive of Electronic Arts Japan has criticised the Japanese video game ratings board for allowing upcoming action game Stellar Blade to be released uncensored while EA's own Dead Space was banned in the country.

CrimsonWing6921d ago

He’s got a point. If a game is M-Rated, which is the equivalent of an R rating, I don’t get why you need to censor anything. The rating is the indicator of the content and the age appropriate. If it’s appropriate for adults… why treat them like children? 🤷‍♂️

Eonjay20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

This is about gore... not about anything sexual. And specifically I think it is about the realistic depiction of gore. Unfortunately I don't know the nuance of the CERO board or how it is relevant their specific culture (as a prohibition on gore may transcend age) so I hesitate to make a statement. Can anyone else provide insight to what kind of gore is considered unacceptable?

CrimsonWing6920d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Yea, I know this is about gore, but thanks for pointing that out.

My point still stands, if a game is essentially rated for a mature audience then why censor for them as if they’re too young to view it? Makes no sense.

To answer your question: Decapitation, dismemberment, like… anything gore. They have been censoring that since CERO was established. Look up RE4 chainsaw decapitation or any MK games that made it there.

Cacabunga20d ago

EA Japan? Wtf never heard of that

ZwVw20d ago

Yet, the Oneechanbara series (y'know, the game with half-naked samurai females slicing up zombies to bloody pieces) get released in Japan uncensored.

The CERO ratings board is an equilibrium.

Smellsforfree19d ago

This confuses me since I've seen so many gory Japanese movies and anime. For example, Battle Royale.

gold_drake20d ago

definitely has a point.

but .. its japan. are we really surprised?

VersusDMC20d ago

I don't know if the EA executive is going off the one close up of an arm being cut off in the demo. Maybe it's uncensored because it's the arm of a cyborg or it doesn't happen that often (didn’t see EVE dismemberment when killed in the demo) .

In the states there's a certain amount of swear words allowed to a PG13 movie before it is deemed R. So maybe it's the same in Japan for gore?

Eonjay20d ago

Yes I think you may be on to something. The violence is gory but I wouldn't call it gruesome.

Retroman20d ago

Ea Japan please make Knack 3
in the future

Eonjay20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Does EA Japan actually make games at all? Or are they just a regional publisher?

Retroman19d ago

I'm sorry Japan Studio made Knack
