It doesn't matter all that much which one is more powerful, 3rd party game publishers often design their games around the lowest common denominator anyways. It happened on the PS2 and it happened on the Xbox 360.

The way I see it...

MS caters to the #1 gaming demographic in the world...North America.

Us "American's" (that's including Canadians like me) means we want the biggest and best. bigger = better is our mentality.

I see MS using their vast amount of resources to produce a very powerful console and taking a large hit on it at retail in order to get it into the homes of North America citizens. Consider MS also wants the 720 to have a Kinect 2.0 unit already installed in each unit and for the console to replace (eventually) your cable box.

That is a lot the console will have to do AND play Battlefield 3 PC like games.

I have no doubt that MS will release a very powerful console since they can afford it making billions from XBL which will help cushion the initial loss that MS will take on each console sold until manufacturing cost become lower and MS later start turing a profit after a few years on each console sold.

Lets not forget that MS is also willing to subsidise selling units. Buying cheap but have an XBL contract for X amount of years....we all know MS will actually make MORE money that way then someone buying a console outright. Win win situation. MS get's market share and returns on XBL while the consumer gets an affordable gaming unit sooner rather then later.

MS have set themselves up in a really profitable position this gen. It all comes down to money. MS are worth $230 billion and Sony is worth $12 billion. It's easy enough to see that MS just have the resources to create a stronger system then Sony and sell it at a competing price against Sony. MS may lose more money on each console sold but they could outsell the PS4 to retain market share. The more 720's in homes, the more MS makes on services like XBL which would be a reoccuring revenue.

Makes no sense for MS to allow thie main console competitor to get a leg up on them going into next gen when MS have fought so hard this gen to be a contending competitor in the console market.

Expect MS to come out next gen with everything AND the kitchen sink crammed into the 720.

Bottom line, IMO the 720 will be significantly more powerful then the PS4.

He's infamous for his many-years tales of fantastic graphical "x-engine" that should be soon used in X360 games and put all those Sony exclusives to shame. And he told this for about two or three years since 2009, if I remember correctly! He's an object of jokes in russian console flamewars, a synonym to utter liar. Actually this one can be completely debunked by anyone who knows about computer hardware.

The article is a translation mess so its difficult to know for sure how he meant it but either way its bunk.

It seems he was implying 2 banks of Ram again for the PS4, 1 with 4Gb DDR3 and 1 with an additional 4Gb GDDR5, GDDR5 is graphics double data rate v5, it is VRam not DIM Ram and is impossible to use as normal Ram.

And even if he did mean 4Gb of VRam on the GPU, the cheapest GPU on the market right now with 4Gb of GDDR5 is $450.

Actually, the PS3 is not more powerful than the 360. This has been explained by many developers. The PS3 has a more powerful CPU (also more difficult to use), while the 360 has a more powerful GPU and better memory architecture (and more available RAM due to smaller OS footprint).

So your comments is pretty far off base. Even though both consoles (PS3 and 360) are extremely close in overall power, people make a huge deal over any small difference they might perceive there to be.

I don't think graphical performance is the end-all and be-all of a console's worth, but obviously many people place a very high premium on graphical capabilities.

Yeah the 360's launch lineup wasn't exactly overflowing with triple a quality titles, but a bunch of barely optimized xbox ports, not saying the ps3 was much better. Hello gun, ring any bells.

Rfom was a good game(subjective stupid) as was motorstorm, now the next xbox is likely not going to be more powerful, simply because the ps4 is expected to launch last and the 720 first.

real gamers cheer for innovation not a brand. i love xbox live, just hated microsofts present gen tactics. so i went with sony. I hope sony has done enough this gen to force microsoft to make a real quality console next gen, but i wont hold my breath. Id love to be able to justify buying an xbox console other then by peer pressure. microsoft definately has the budget to do it i believe theyll compete with sony on a hardware level this gen, due to the almost certainty of same year release for both platforms, and the huge success of blu ray(no more fucking dvd microsoft, its done leave it alone).

The near 2TF rumors are true, that would make them 8-10times more powerful than Xbox 360 and PS4.

Also, Timmy, I have been reading up on Gaf and Semi-accurate the last 6 months, EVERY SINGLE DETAIL in that article is a mish mash of every rumor/debunked rumore since last August.
In fact, the "blitter" detail was thrown into Gaf yesterday by a poster that reg'd the same day.

If ANYONE thinks we're getting 3.5-4TF next gen, its impossible to do it affordably.
However, both next gen systems will perform far superior to a pc with those TF. Maybe even a pc with its double the specs.

And with new hardware, i am sure the network will gain some much needed improvements. This is something that would theoretically validate the fee.

Sony lost so much money with powerful tech. ps3 is going to be the least selling console for sony and Vita with all its tech is not selling good at all.

I think if sony DOES NOT make a system thats profitable within the first 6 months to a year on ps4 (which means less power) then the powers to be at sony need to be fired. Sony cannot lose money for 5-6 years on ps4 like they did with ps3. and vita connot hold them over till ps4 starts making money because its not selling at all.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this but console manufactures don't really make a lot off of console sells it comes from software profits.

With MS they push hard on XBLG to make up for it and for tech that dev after dev has said held the industry back. But none of that is important.

You need to keep in mind that PS+ is very common in the PS3 gaming community...my friends list is full and they all have PS+ so they have considerable profits there. Add to that PS3 has home which Sony has gone on record several times saying that it's making them some good cash.

The truth is PS4 is already set up to make money out the gate regardless of if it loses money on each console sold because the system will have additional revenue streams that other consoles don't.

Back to topic on hand every day there is a new rumor saying this or that we won't know anything until March or later so these posts just need to go away until then.

Of course it's just speculation but if you look at the end of this gen it looks more like Microsoft is going for casuals lately with a lot of Kinect exclusives and less hardcore exclusives. Design matters as much as anything. If both have full HSA who knows. But MS and AMD work together on that and there is likely an advantage for MS there. I doubt if they will allow AMD to just hand Sony things that they developed. Though it seemed to have happened with this generation. And having additional processors doesn't neccesarily make programming harder with HSA. It just adds another resource. The OS sees it all as one part. And the tools will make a difference there too. MS released C++ AMP some time ago which makes using those GPU's easy for things other than graphics.

APUs are far cheaper to make than CPUs. That is the main cost for a consoles. Also, die sizes are far smaller than the last generation and that cuts the cost a ton. Even if the next Xbox has three APU's, they designed the chip, and they shop it to manufacturers. The cost of the APU's should be less than $200 per consoles. Full Trinity A10/7660D GPU is $130 at Newegg. Specialized APU's would be much cheaper. Especially in bulk.

These consoles will be $400 or less and that may be at a small profit per console.

Thats a bold statement. Especially with the Wii U apparently taking a small hit on every system at $350 (unless its only the $300 version selling at a loss). Baring in mind the cost of Wii U pad, if the next xbox+Playstation are a huge leap forward+ feature USPs like kinect 2/new ps eye/tablet controller I wouldn't expect them to initially sell at a profit at any price below $600.

Companies like that people think the equipment the equipment is more than it is. look at Kinect. Everyone thought it would be very expensive to make. It wasn't. $47 to $60 at launch. I'm sure it cheaper now.

APUs have the CPU and GPU on the same die. That cuts cost almost in half day one on the two main parts. Last generation, the die size was 90nm on each chip. Now they are most likely using 28nm parts. Smaller nm means more chips per silicon wafer. And that's what makes chips cheap.

Think of this. The next Xbox is rumored to have as many as three APU. Two to six cores on each. The 360 has one APU and cost MS under $150 to make. Look up that A10 APU on Newegg. $130 retail. Retail mark-up, manufacturer mark-up and AMD mark-up. And that is a full chip. console APUs won't have all of the components of a off the shelf chip.

Also look at the leak MS admitted was from them. Their target price was $299 for a two APU system. With chip prices from several years ago. Adding one APU and considering die shrinks since that memo and there is no reason they can't still hit that manufacturing price.

My point believe what you see not hear(read).
Other point it doesn't matter, never has. example, ps1 vs Nintendo 64 or gameboy vs game gear or wii vs ps3/Xbox or snes vs sega cd or ds vs psp. Nintendo has been winning with less power with the exception of the 64. I even owned all of the said consoles and IMO the ones who lost had the best graphics and library of games but sold less due to price and kid factor. Kid factor sells that's why Pixar and Disney are so strong in everything they do from movies to toys. Nintendo is kid friendly so they sell.
That said though hardcore gamers like me like power and stuff BUT in a case where two consoles share basiclly the same level of power give or take a sec here or there it doesn't matter. Imma buy both anyway.

I'm probably not buying either one for a couple of years and I'm not paying $400 this time either like i did for the PS3 in the summer of 2008 (and I only did THAT because of the $100 Walmart giftcard deal which went towards a Dualshock and MGS IV, and made the system itself cost $300). I'm also probably not spending $350 like I did for the 360 in Aug. 2007 just because they came out with a version that had a hard drive and an HDMI and Halo 3 was on the way.

I will buy these when they hit $300 and when they have a decent library and have had time to make engineering changes to prevent early system death. Maybe. If they aren't awful slow loading DRM, micro-transaction, and pass code choked 'subscription model' abominations with ads that interrupt gameplay and the "real" endings of games sold to me as on disc DLC and I can't let a friend borrow my games or trade them, and stupid motion controls shoehorned into normal games.
