Damians rant - Disc Format Or Cartridge Based

In 2013, video games are in the stages of next-gen. All current generation video game consoles use disc-based formats (Xbox/PS3 & Wii). With the first next-generation console, the WiiU, being disc format and using DVD Nine as that format I would say they are using last gen’s technology. With Xbox/PlayStation next-generation consoles using possibly both Blu-Ray as their disc format, they are truly next gen and ahead of the game.

With these next-generation consoles using.....

I approved for ya, Damian. Good article btw. The problem with flash storage is price. It's cost prohibitive at the moment.

dedicatedtogamers4123d ago

The 3DS and PSVita both use physical carts. And, the price of those games are typically $30-$40. Add an extra $20 for a console cartridge (bringing it up to the normal price of $60) would allow for larger capacity.

Plus, Cartidges with flash storage have a lot of advantages:

- save files right on the cart
- patches, DLC, etc downloaded right to the cart
- significantly faster load times

And MOST importantly:

- hardware tweaks

What I mean is, "back in the day", game developers were able to include chips and enhancements inside of the cartridge that allowed the game to go beyond what the console would normally be able to handle. Starfox on the SNES would be an example. Metal Gear (with its enhanced sound chip) would be another example. It would be nice if you could have a game like, Crysis 4 on future consoles on a cartridge. Let's say future consoles don't have QUITE enough RAM for Crytek to push the game further. Okay, well just throw a bit into the cartridge itself and you're good to go.

you're forgetting that development costs is much more lower on handhelds compared to consoles. You don't have to look further than "SDD vs HDD" to see how much more games would cost if they were cartridges... $140 for a 128GB SDD vs $160 for a 1TB HDD.

A disc only costs like 3-5 cents to a publisher while a cartridge would be like $3-5. The difference is huge. Easily games would cost like $80-100 on a cartridge.

This article is a fail , How is the Wiiu using Last gen DVD technology ? It's using Panasonic Propietary Blu ray based 25GB single layer Optical discs and can Have 50GB discs and even go up to quad layered discs.

The wiiu's disc drive is faster than the PS3's also.

Last gen tech that is better than the ps3's blu ray drive ?

I know the Ps3 can have 25/50GB discs , But So can the wiiu and it has a faster reading speed, so by default it's better. The wiiu discs even look EXACTLY like a blu ray when you shine them in light. They're blue.

Only problem is the wiiu doesn't read blu ray films...

But yeh , BS article , the Wiiu's disc drive is better than Ps3's and way way way better than 360's and wii's.

Sanquine904123d ago

Jeeh the wii U has a better blue ray than a 6 year old console? Big suprise.. Sorry i do not want to troll.

doogiebear4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

Who cares what Wii U does. What will it matter when REAL next gen starts.

millzy1024123d ago

this article is bull shit, I stoped reading after he said Wii u uses DVD 9 which is not the case DVD 9 only goes up to 9 gig (dual layer) it uses proprietary disc format simalar to bluray at 25gigs, now i do have a Wii u but I'm not a nintedo fanboy as I have other consoles but if he can't get simple facts right then he hasn't got my time, he also says that DVD 9 is last gen tech then brings up flash storage which has been around for ages, so is that not last gen tech aswell. people are so stupid it annoys me.

ElectricKaibutsu4123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

Right? Where did he hear the Wii U uses DVD 9? I never even heard that as a rumor. It was always 25gb blu-ray based discs. Strange mistake...

Edit: Also, reading more into the article, the disc drive does not generate that much heat. It's the gpu, cpu, and ram you have to worry about.

Edit 2: About the article itself, I don't know exactly why consoles don't use cartridges now that their storage space has caught up with discs. I'm assuming it's cost. Printing a disc is very cheap. The DS and Vita uses discs because, as hand helds, load times and low power consumption are important and cartridges help alleviate both those problems. Also a handheld with a disc could be bad because moving a disc drive while a disc is spinning could damage the drive or disc, as people with the early model 360 can attest. I'm aware the original PSP used umds, I own one, but Sony has since made the switch to cartridges.

ApexHell4123d ago

yup wii u uses proprietry rounded edge 25GB discs based on blu-ray.

EddieNX 4123d ago

The wiiu can Read up to quad layer discs aswell 128GB or what ever that is. The ps3 can read a maximum of 50GB per disc.

AQnd yes , the Wiiu ofcourse can Have 50GB dual layered dics.

This article is misinformed and pathetic.

The wiiu's basically has Blu ray (without the films) and is significantly faster than the Ps3's Blu ray drive.

Fail article is fail , Spreading anti Nintendo BS as usual. Pathetic.

Sano644123d ago

I stopped reading when he said the disk lasers are what's causing the systems to over heat

chestnut11224123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

Despite With the crisis we are all experiencing today., All of them are overpriced., One of the main reason why some of the console and handheld's sales decreased, .,

Honest_gamer4123d ago

would be better if games where released on an SSD that just slotted into the machine :/ bye bye loading times

sway_z4123d ago

A return to cartridge based media or SSD and pay ridiculously high prices for games, like $70 - $100 per game?

.....No thanks!

This article > another completely pointless waste of net space.

ElectricKaibutsu4123d ago

I believe Star Fox 64 was $70 when I bought it at launch. Which is what, $100 in today's dollars? Good times...

Pacific Rim Pinball comes to Pinball FX

This could be fun as they make great tables. Go big or go extinct. Prime your senses for a neural handshake and step into the cockpit of a Jaeger. It is on you to cancel the apocalypse when Pacific Rim Pinball comes to Pinball FX on May 16.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies16h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken12h ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing691d 3h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker1d 3h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing691d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt15h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken12h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
