Eyes-on with Valve's Steambox prototypes

The Steamboxes are here! Well ... sort of. The prototypes for various Steambox designs are certainly here at CES 2013, and we just spent a grip of time acquainting our lenses very closely with them. The devices range in size and form factor, as well as origin -- several of the devices we saw originate from Valve internal, but inclusions like Alienware's X51 and Digital Storm's Bolt were also being held up as examples of the ongoing "Steam in your living room" initiative (note: all the controllers are off-the-shelf Logitech wireless devices, not prototypes). The idea here, as Valve hardware engineer Jeff Keyzer told us, was to show off a variety of form factors for living room-friendly designs. We'll have more from our meeting later today, but for now you can feast your eyes on the elegant prototypes -- as well as Xi3's Piston, and the aforementioned other two third-party PCs -- that we'll be sure to see more of as 2013 goes on.

They both look cheap!!! And the controller look like it was made in the 90's!!! If there concepts/prototype make the hella flashy!! Haha like they made that big "X" that was all chrome out years ago for the Xbox

dirthurts4139d ago

These are mostly chassis that you can buy now, for cheap. Nothing here is really meant to be anything resembling a final product.
The controller is also a cheap Logitech controller I believe (not 100 percent sure on the brand, but I know I've seen them in stores).

I want to see how the final version of valves steam box handles battlefield 3

It might be a bit easier to just pick a game that's on Steam as a benchmark. Metro 2033 is pretty much guaranteed to drain a lot of processing resources even if you have a dual card setup (I do, and it is still taxing). Max Payne 3 also has a pretty high top end, especially with high AA. Far Cry 3 might be another option, but for my setup (which is an overpowered dual card rig), it's mostly antialiasing and postFX that are draining. It's pretty smooth for me otherwise.

I wonder if you can use your own controller on one, I have a usb port for a PS2 Controller I'd like to use on it.

Pc gamers will take this as an excuse to pirate things

KyRo14d ago

I'm not sure why you're getting disgrees. Whilst not all PC gamers are petty, an awful lot of them are lol

Crows9014d ago

Entirely untrue. Not any more petty than console gamers. The only large difference is console gamers don't have much of a choice.

Michiel198913d ago

Not sure why you're getting agrees. an awful lot of console gamers are overemotional twinks ready to go to war over a plastic box, I'll take being a pc gamer then.

Speaking about overgeneralizing much.

"X" type of gamer conversations are cringe

qalpha14d ago

Daily reminder that 'TheGamer' is a corporate-generated, anti-gamer, anti-consumer, clickbait web site. They are mostly A.I. generated articles that villainize gamers. They provide nothing positive and actively try to provoke and divide the community through extreme view points and politics. Do not give them any clicks.

Inverno14d ago

Only scumbags? As if people don't play their games on console put in the most amount of hours and return it to GameStop and trade it in for another game. But also how many people are actually do this? And what games have been allowed to be refunded?

DustMan14d ago

You can refund any game you've purchased as long as it hasn't been longer than two weeks, and you've played less than 2 hours. I wish they would change it to 3 hours because some RPG's have so much exposition that you may only get an hour total of complete gameplay. That's my only knock on it. I've refunded plenty of stuff I was just curious to try. I typically stay away from Early Access titles which are the only ones affected by this policy change.

Inverno14d ago

Apparently early access doesn't count, only complete games with a play early preorder bonus.

Gaming4Life198114d ago

I definitely know if I want a refund in 2 hours.

SegaSaturn66913d ago

I never liked refunding anything. Even if a film is bad, i dont want my money back. Sometimes things just aren't for me, and it's not the creator's fault necessarily.

Gaming4Life198113d ago

I feel you and i have never walked out on a bad movie cause I payed my money. I also don't refund games cause I'm a gamer and I know what to buy lol. I think having a digital refund is great.
