Nintendo responds to Mario sequelitis criticism

Nintendo has responded to recent criticism that it has begun churning out Mario games at too frequent a pace.

Company president Satoru Iwata explained that the past logic of releasing one 2D Mario per Nintendo system would still continue - probably.

3 mario games in less then a year is really milking it.

Capt-FuzzyPants4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

But you can't blame them. Mario games sell a lot. They make a ton of money off them. And anyway some of the games are different like the sports and Mario Party. I understand that they should really work on things besides Mario too, but when they're making so much money why would they.

Hisiru4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

@majiebeast
Portable Mario games:
-The last portable 2D mario game was launched in 2006 for the original DS. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is completely different from Mario 3D Land, so you can't even compare. New Super mario Bros 2 is not milk imo, it's a "sequel" to a 2006 DS game in a different platform.

-The last portable 3D Mario game was launched in 2004 (Mario 64 for the DS), so Mario 3D Land is also not a milk, it's the new 3D portable game after the 2004 release.

Now the consoles:
-The last console 2D Mario game was launched in 2009 (New Super Mario Bros. Wii), so New Super mario Bros U is going to launch 3 years after the last Mario 2D game on consoles.

How exactly is this milking? How is it different from what Sony (resistance 1, 2, 3 + PSP game/several others like Motorstorm) and Microsoft (Gears of War 1, 2, 3, spin off/Halo 3, Halo reach, Halo 4, Halo ODST) is doing?

The problem is not "milking" the problem is that NSMBU looks very similar to the other "New" Super Mario 2D games.

You guys really want to hate on Mario/Nintendo and say they are "milking" mario, but all the 3 companies are doing the same.

@Hisiru

Your really comparing the amount of Mario games we get to other big franchises like COD, Assassin Creed and Halo

Despite being those types of franchises which seem to get milked a lot. COD coming out every year for example and Halo with how many we've had just on this gen they don't compare to how much Nintendo milk Mario.

As Mikecosgrove has said below if most other games this gen which are only up to their third game or sometimes just the second get points taken off while it comes to reviewing them because they "feel the same" or "add nothing new" then why should the same not be said about Mario.

No one is "hating" on Mario or Nintendo so lets not try and spin this whole thing, people are jus starting to realise that Mario is becoming milked, it's not just some random BS that people have came up with out of the blue it's a fact.

Where are the new IPs from Nintendo thats what we want or even as RmanX1000 has said below how about some new installmets of old franchises like a Starfox game or a one of F-Zero.

Hisiru4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

@-Omega
So youre using your personal opinion to describe what is "big"? Really? For me millions of others, a 2D/3D mario release IS big, it's still the most known character in the industry of gaming consoles.

"COD coming out every year for example and Halo with how many we've had just on this gen they don't compare to how much Nintendo milk Mario."

Really? COD is adding a lot of new and innovative features in every year, right? No. Halo had at least 4 new Halo games in the same console.

I am not saying New Super Mario Bros U looks innovative, the last really innovative Mario I played was Mario Galaxy 2, but still, even if it's not innovative, it doesn't mean it's "milk". People were complaining that there is too much Mario in a short period and I explained that we had the last 2D portable game was in 2006, the last 3D portable Mario was in 2004 and the last 2D console Mario was in 2009.

"people are jus starting to realise that Mario is becoming milked, it's not just some random BS that people have came up with out of the blue it's a fact."
Youre using what kind of standards? Your personal standards? It's baseless argument imo. As for quality, it's not up to you to decide for me (consumer), it's a personal opinion and even reviews can't tell me what is good and what is not good; as for sales it's still selling well; and as for date releases/short period I already showed you that last time we had one Mario game in each category was a long time ago.

"Where are the new IPs from Nintendo thats what we want or even as RmanX1000 has said below how about some new installmets of old franchises like a Starfox game or a one of F-Zero."

Iwata already confirmed they have both new IPs and traditional games to announce, we just need to wait for the WiiU conference before we talk about it.
http://nintendoeverything.c...
"Those include both our traditional franchises and of course new propositions as well"

@Freakazoid2012:
Exactly! As for "old IPs", they Released Donkey Kong Country Returns, Punch Out, Excite series, Pillotwings, Kid Icarus, Metroid Other M and many others. As I said above, Iwata already confirmed they will announce more traditional games and new IPs.

Freakazoid20124280d ago

@Omega, That's honestly not a valid point. You are saying it only applies to Mario because he has been around longer than AC or CoD? So its okay that COD comes out yearly because its only been out 15 years but its pathetic that we have 10 mario Platform games in 30 years? If those franchises were as old as Mario they'd have a ton more games out,not just 10.

Okay your comment on new IPs. Last Story, Pandoras tower, Disaster day of crisis, come to mind but I know there are more.

Old IPs like Star fox? You mean like DKC,Punchout or excite bike? Those are actually on Wii too. People only cry about Starfox because its like the only thing you have left to pull up that Nintendo hasnt already done a game for.
If they did make starfox,it would some how get missed kinda like how you missed all their new IP's and old IPs in your post.

ConstipatedGorilla4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

They sell a lot, but if they start over saturating, people will grow tired of it. How about a new IP, Nintendo? Please create a new franchise, I'm begging you!

Lol I got a disagree already... I guess we don't want any new franchises. I really hate this site.

The problem is that they all play the same.

I mean they think that adding some new items for Mario to get makes it fresh and exciting.

Look at the jump between Super Mario 64 to Super Mario Sunshine then to Super Mario Galaxy...BIG Differences.

Hell the Wii U one just looks like New Super Mario Bros Wii but in HD. I know the whole defense to this is "Oh well as along as the game is good why should we care" because other franchises get marked down when it comes to reviewing them because of the games feeling the same as the last ones. Look at Uncharted 3 and Gears of War 3 last year in most reviews people said something along the lines of "Despite being a fantastic game, it feels like we've done all this before" then go on to give them both a lower score. We shouldn't give Mario a free pass, this has to stop

It bugs me because they could of done Luigis Manison 2 instead as a launch game for the Wii U but gave it a handheld release instead.

linkratos4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

In what world are the New Mario games not penalized? They receive much lower scores than the games you mentioned and the other classic Marios like World, 64, and Galaxy. Tons of reviews harp on about how nothing has changed much.

victoryscreeeeeech4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

U shouldnt compare mario 64 and sunshine to galaxy, cuz one came out in '96, then '02, then '07, by those years people want more 3d Mario, i want more 3d mario now, they are good games, i cant tell if ur being sarcastic on the 3d mario tho. i dunno about the new super mario bros 2d side scroller cuz ur right it is just an HD edition, and reviews on that game for the 3ds are essentially, "its the esame game, but its still good' similar to gears and uncharted. sorry fo grammar, reply if im wrong, i would like to know why

ronin4life4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

This. I am a little annoyed by this as well...

But what is funny is during the GC era, all anyone would say is "WHAT THE #$%$# IS THIS CRAP?? I WANT MARIO, NOT LUIGI'S MANSION OR ANIMAL CROSING FMWJFNWFJNJB"... and once Mario Sunshine came out, it changed to "...WHAT. This Isn't Mario!! GIVE ME MAH MARIO!!!!"...

Funny how quickly things can change...>.<;;

Your avatar perfectly fits your comment XD

RmanX10004280d ago

There arent too many, but their "wow" or nostalgic factor of the NSMB series stopped after the NSMB Wii. We seriously need a new StarFox and/or F-Zero

TheLyonKing4280d ago

They do milk Mario but he still sells. Nintendo can probably to continue to squeeze some more money out there cash cows for a few more years if they keep things fresh.

NyGiants74280d ago

Sony and MS do the same exact thing w/ there franchises. Halo, Resistance, Gears, COD, GOW, etc

TheLyonKing4280d ago

Yeah but when you look at the years mario has spanned I think they might have milked mario a bit longer than those franchises.

allyc4t4280d ago

I must be the only one enjoying NSMB2...

omarzy4280d ago

I'm loving it as well. Even if it did not add a whole bunch, it is still just as high quality as the ds one which is very good.

triplev164280d ago

I'll be picking it up soon, glad to hear people are enjoying it.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno5d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
