Tekken designer Harada San says that gamers are no longer slaves to console makers

The designer of Tekken, one of the world's most popular video game blockbusters, says that console makers can no longer control the way people game.

Harada San, game director and chief producer of fighting game franchise, Tekken, told news.com.au that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo should use their powers for good instead of evil, by joining forces.

I hope this never happens. If it does happen everybody will be forced to pay to play online. I will just quit console gaming.

Dante1124294d ago

Yeah, $60 a year just to play online with friends? Would really suck if Nintendo and Sony started to also charge to play online.

nukeitall4294d ago

Nintendo is new, so they don't even know the cost and don't have a real "online centric customer base" yet. However, it would not surprise me if Sony charged for PSN on PS4.

***"However, it would not surprise me if Sony charged for PSN on PS4."***

They already do; PS+ and PS Home.

Dante1124293d ago (Edited 4293d ago )

@ Outside

PS+ is optional (you can play online without it), not mandatory like MS does with Live (you have to pay to play online) and PS Home is free to use.

Awesome_Gamer4293d ago

Sony will never do that. Believe me
it's thier main selling point against the comptettion

nukeitall4293d ago

@Awesome_Gamer:

It's a selling point, because when PSN released it was far inferior than Xbox Live and a overpriced PS3. There is no way they could have justified it.

With PS Vita (or PSP for that matter), it is hardly as popular as the 3DS so they need another selling point.

The PS3 still has strong enough branding to include a pay-to-play subscription with the PS4 release. It's a vicious cycle otherwise for Sony, as customers pay and MS keeps re-investing more into Xbox Live, causing more people to pay for it again.

So? Sony does not have to follow Microsoft's pay to play online model in order to get income. There are other ways to get money and PS+ is one of those "other ways."

***"It's a selling point, because when PSN released it was far inferior than Xbox Live and a overpriced PS3. There is no way they could have justified it."***

So you think the reason why Sony didn't charge for PSN was because they couldn't justify it? That makes no sense. If that really was the issue then why not charge at a low price or charge to play online right now? Yeah, that's because they wanted to use free online as a selling point.

***"The PS3 still has strong enough branding to include a pay-to-play subscription with the PS4 release."***

Eh, no. Just because people are willing to do it for the Xbox does not meant people will do it for the PlayStation. Everyone that is saying that Sony should charge for PSN are people that aren't going to pay for it if they do charge because most of them are Xbox players that aren't going to be paying for online for two separate systems. All forcing people to pay to play online will do is shrink the PSN online community which results in less people buying things from the PS store and less people playing and games on PSN.

Hypocrisy...

He still follows EA's trend to add online pass and no one says nothing.

What is the point of Xbox?

Xbox has repeated the same terrible mistakes for over a decade. The reason is simple: its priorities are back-to-front.

ohhh man, the press really did not like those last closures, their having a field day bashing xbox,

anyway, ive got to nip off to the shops now, i've run out of microwave popcorn.

Jingsing8h ago

Apparently the last 10 years wasn't enough to get the gaming press to notice but as soon as they touch Bethesda it is full on nuclear war. A lot of people in the gaming press seem to have this irrational hard on for Fallout and Skyrim despite the fact they are low quality poor buggy games.
I've grown tiresome of the unbalanced fandom in the gaming press for fantasy games and their ability to just forgive crap so long as it's a fantasy game RPG game all quality concerns are not an issue for them,

anast7h ago

Popcorn has been good lately.

PapaBop5h ago

Clearly this is just a big conspiracy orchestrated by the popcorn industry, Microsoft are just their puppets, every time they open their mouths, I'm forced to stock up on popcorn.

XiNatsuDragnel23h ago

Xbox is getting rightfully roasted here

Einhander197222h ago

The only point to xbox is and always has been to take market share and money from PlayStation and Nintendo, but mostly PlayStation. It's been the goal since sweaty Steve Balmer said it himself.

ApocalypseShadow16h ago

Yup. To put Sony out of business because they thought they were a threat to their Windows business.

solideagle3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Genuinely curious: how is Sony (hardware company) threat to Windows (operating system/software company) business?

isarai20h ago

I mean the motto "xbox, the most optional console ever made" was peaked years ago, people are just now taking a step back from deepthroating Phil to see what we've all been seeing for a long time now.

P_Bomb19h ago

I’ve still got friends that main on XB. For their sake, I hope it sticks around. They’ve put everything into that ecosystem. It’s all or nothing.

I wonder if we’ll ever get back the level of competition seen during the 360/PS3 era?

NotoriousWhiz9h ago

Seems like Daddy Microsoft is trying to shut it down. Or at least bring costs under control. On the bright side, it seems likely that acquisitions are going to stop.

Xbox, do you even have a plan anymore?

TSA asks what is the future for Xbox.

They clearly never did, hence why they spent so many BILLIONS on other publishers as a last resort.

anast23h ago

They have a plan. It's to move everything toward streaming and mobile. This is just the next step.

Cacabunga22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

With half of the money they spent, they could have been on the very top and the gaming industry would be way bigger than it is.. encourage developers, indies, make them grow trust them and they will deliver.

Tody_za22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

What are you talking about Cacabunga? The Xbox faithful insisted that Microsoft has infinite money, and after Activision they should buy Square Enix and Capcom before Sony does. There was no chance ever that Microsoft would do this. They would use their infinite millions and Bitcoins to invest in 50 new IP and beat everyone.

Tody_za19h ago

Did I really need to add a /s to my comment...

SonyStyled18h ago

The Parent company of Xbox spent billions on publishers, not Xbox

andy8523h ago

To ruin great studios it's looking like

Skuletor23h ago

Sure, a plan to be a more hated game company than EA. Ubisoft were recently giving them a run for their money but I think Xbox have really knocked it out the park with their latest stunt.

neutralgamer199223h ago

Absolutely not, their whole plan is at odd with what MS wants

Phil wants GP to become big
MS wants to sell games and make billions

GP can’t be sustained with AAA games which take 3-5 years and 7 figure budgets. Only go put those games on GP day one. Why do you think games are coming out on other platforms?

People want a change and want Phil gone without realizing if someone new comes along they may want to change everything again so we just keep going in circles. Phil has to realize that and give clear message on the direction of Xbox
