We don't pay for exclusives says Nintendo

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has swept aside any notion of Nintendo splashing the cash for big platform exclusives.

Iwata said that they will not be paying for exclusives. Instead they will be looking for games that make innovative use of the Wii U's unique capabilities.

matgrowcott4309d ago

I keep reading about Nintendo high-ups saying they don't do certain things. "We don't pay for exclusives." "We don't force developers to add achievements." Not so long ago they were saying that they don't see why they'd focus on online services.

It's nice that they have their own identity, but there's a lot of things that PS3/360 owners take for granted and without those things they might not buy into a Wii U. You have to be flexible and Nintendo don't seem to want to adapt to how gaming is changing.

Morrigan-Aensland4309d ago (Edited 4309d ago )

I think zombie u might be ported to Xbox and ps3 since Ubisoft likes making money and Nintendo didn't pay for it. I think it should be ported to the vita also. I won't buy the game but I know a lot of gamers say they like the game so I'm quite sure a few would get it for other systems.

Rye or the Kaiser, or the wheat or the white
Maybe I can suggest an appetizer!
Stay away from the tuna, it smells funny tonight
But you just can't go wrong with the ryyye.. or the kaiser...

Am I the only one that doesn't understand why this comment was posted in this article? Or why it was a reply to Matgrowcott's comment? Or why it got so many agree's when it was far off topic? Doesn't make any sense.. but hey that's N4G for ya.

Jadedz4309d ago (Edited 4309d ago )

They'll never do what Microsoft does, but they'll gladly pay for advertising and what not, for a game's exclusive right to be on their gaming platforms.

Nintendo can't afford a bidding war between Sony and Microsoft. Maybe they can, but it would be at the expense of them paying out the ***, and they'd rather use their funds for game development purposes.

matgrowcott4309d ago

I can understand the reasons behind it, I'm not saying they should out and out emulate Sony and Microsoft. It just occurs to me that Nintendo have thus far spent more time telling people what they don't plan to do over what they plan to do. And when you read behind the lines, to me it sounds like "we don't follow trends, we make them."

And you really have to get the basics down before you can break the rules. I sort of think that was the problem with the Wii, they started with the controller instead of starting with a gaming machine.

PopRocks3594309d ago

"You have to be flexible and Nintendo don't seem to want to adapt to how gaming is changing."

They are. The Wii had next to no online service, had little third party support and no achievements. The Wii U is the exact opposite from that.

hellvaguy4309d ago

Ok the ps2 and xbox 1 had online and 3rd party support 5 years before the wii even released.

So basically over 10 years later the Wii U is still playing catch up. Depressing.

Hisiru4309d ago

@hellvaguy
So you forgot the Gamecube?

SkullBlade1694309d ago (Edited 4309d ago )

@hisiru

What, you mean the two Gamecube games that supported online play and required an add-on to the console?

For the record, Dreamcast supported online play. Even the Mega Drive/Genesis had a very limited support for it. The little support that the Gamecube provided is hardly worth bringing up in a debate.

Nintendo is even behind Sega, a company that stopped working on consoles in 2003 in the online aspect. This isn't something to be proud of. :P

Hisiru4309d ago (Edited 4309d ago )

@SkullBlade169
I think it's ignorance to say Nintendo is behind sega, but I could say the same thing about motion control on the Wii (which was copied by Sony and Microsoft later), the same thing can be said about D-pad, rumble, analog, triggers and some other things Nintendo brought to the industry. Now Nintendo did it again and Microsoft is trying to improve the xbox companion app calling it "Smart Glass" and trying to copy Nintendo. The same goes to Sony improving the PSP's capabilities trying to give the same WiiU experience.

Like it or not, Nintendo is also always bringing something new to the industry, so your "Nintendo is behind Y" argument has some flaws. Youre probably just a hater.

Also we don't even have the full details about the WiiU. We should wait for the september conference then we will be able to talk about that.

BitbyDeath4308d ago

I could say the same thing about motion control on the Wii (which was copied by Sony and Microsoft later)

PS2 was the first to do motion control with the Eye-Toy

CaptainN4308d ago

So you guys think Nintendo was behind in online, try reading this article and get back to me !

Ahh the Dreamcast...happy memories.

Puddlejumper754308d ago

Wii had online and it worked fine in every game I played online

Some games even had achievements they just didnt force everyone to do it.

@bitbydeasth
PS2 was not the first console to offer motion control gaming. That honor goes to the Atari 2600.

Sono4214308d ago

The fact that you got disagrees just shows how idiotic the people are on here, there's seriously only a handful of level minded people on this site, the rest are biased ignorant morons.

Nintendo like Sony don't need to pay for exlusives. They simply have enough studios to make them on their own.

CouldHaveYelledUiiW4308d ago (Edited 4308d ago )

The problem is that people tend to "radify" Nintendo's comments beyond what they meant.

"NINTENDO Doesn't LIKE HD! They Hate HD! THEY will Never Use it!"

"NINTENDO Hate the INTERWEBZ! They wills Never EVERz have online services. "

Nintendo has always said that somethings need to wait. They thought HD needed a bigger install base before they could make it a selling point- so they made Wii.

They thought the same about online. (Even though GameCube had a modem and Famicom in Japan (in the 80's) had online banking and other advanced at the time features. But they did not make much money off of it, so they stopped.

Nintendo is trying not to force the industry or themselves into investing or pushing technology that the majority does not use or have.

HD TV's now have a bigger install base.
High Speed Internet is was more affordable/common than it was 6 years ago.

Is this a little because of Sony and Microsoft?
Yes.
But you can't argue that both companies won't/didn't make profits in other ways off of those technologies being adopted/pushed.

>Sony MAKES HD TV's. (+games and consoles)
>Microsoft sells Computers (software) and Internet Solution and Browsers. (+games and consoles)

Both of these companies benefit from the money they invest in pushing HD and Internet connection.

Nintendo JUST makes Games and Consoles.

& Dragon Quest? or was that Squares idea? lol Someone plz answer me this (not lying to yourself), "without children & casuals, do u think nintendo would still be in the hardware business?"

Baka-akaB4309d ago (Edited 4309d ago )

Of course it was square's idea , and a no brainer .

Dragon quest games always get released on the machines with the biggest fanbase and most potential . With the wii being on top and easy compatibility on WII U , or the big success of the 3ds , its easy to see why they went there on their own .

Now i dont think Nintendo should brag about not fighting for those exclusives , and having them just happen when the publisher wants to... definitively not a positive message to me .

Especially when the money you are not using could produce new ips ALONG your usual sequels . I love them but Nintendo's ip creation is definitively in the backsit here , and they are the number one driving force behind their home consoles' offering .

HalfNerdHalfAmazing4309d ago

If nintendo wants the core gamers back they have to pay for exclusives

ChunkyLover534309d ago

Why would they have to pay for exclusives? Nintendo has always had some of the best exclusives ever made. The Wii U Gamepad will mean that third party companies will make exclusives by default. Games like ZombiU, which require the Gamepad, its something the other consoles don't have standard, which means Nintendo gets an exclusive that it didn't have to pay for.

Almost everything on the Wii was exclusive, for one reason or another.

cuddlemonkey4309d ago

True but... was/is that a good thing?

jetlian4308d ago (Edited 4308d ago )

Because most hardcore players are above nintendo ips. After 2 years wii had nect to no 3rd party exclusives.

to be honest I got GC/WII for the naruto 4 player games. I had fun with a few other games but thats it. Wii u as far as I can see has nothing.

Nintendo should make some hardcore ips atleast

Puddlejumper754308d ago

You talk about hardcore gaming then bring up Naruto? LMAO.Best joke ever

jetlian4308d ago

yea the fun 4 player fighting game. I read the manga every week. Doesnt mean thats all I play. I like fighting games as well as ninjas so it fits. And naruto is more hardcore than pikman,DK,Mario, zelda or the rest of nintendos line up.

when was the last time anybody really dies in nintendo games? Naruto people get impaled, blown up, hacked you name it.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno10d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably
