Spec Ops The Line Review (NGN)

NGN: "The Spec Ops franchise dates way back to late 90’s and early 2000’s, when the series saw the release of a number of titles, though none went on to become either critical or financial successes as much as the publishers have liked. With 2012’s Spec Ops: The Line, the franchise seeks to reinvent itself with a completely new direction and developer. Even so, the game went through a lengthy and troubled cycle after being announced in 2009, but has now finally seen the light of day. You can expect plenty of shootouts and a unique setting, mixed with an intriguing storyline and dark thematic elements. In a rare case, The Line is competent shooter you’ll remember for its plot rather than the decidedly average action."

Played this game yesterday and wish I could get the 30 minutes of my life that I put into it back.

What were the developers thinking? This game makes Haze feel like a AAA mega blockbuster game.

Ares84HU4292d ago

I don't agree with you. I thought that this game was ok. Not great, but not bad either.

I would wait for a price drop if anyone want's to get it. It's a good game for $25 but don't spend more than that on it.

Patriots_Pride4292d ago

Ok maybe it was not that bad but I was really expecting it to be more on par with Uncharted 3 and Gears 3...maybe my expectation were too high.

Not worth the $60 but if anyone is interested I have a copy on ebay for $40.

Stretch4292d ago

Really? I didn't LOVE it, but I thought it was, at least, functional with some relatively effective moments.

OUUU Right coz US super soldier are no heroes :) cmon...

BushLitter4292d ago

One of the best games I've experienced this year. Gameplay was competent, story was amazing. Worth every penny.

brettyd4292d ago

Wasn't thrilled with the demo gameplay wise, but im interested in it for the story. I'll pick it up when it hits 29.99 in about a month.

Best story in a military shooter ever. Yes, I think it has a better campaign than the first Modern Warfare.

Spec Ops: The Line was super dark.

Incredible story.

SheenuTheLegend63d ago

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Yi-Long64d ago

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons64d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor63d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens5263d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

monkey60263d ago

I adored Driveclub and the Bike expansion. I also loved Motorstorm. Evolution shutting down was a crime

Outrun Online Arcade, Sega Rally Online Arcade, After Burner Climax... all good stuff. I keep my 360 hooked up to play these as well as the TMNT games that were also delisted.

Skuletor63d ago

I have quite a few of these. Timed licenses suck.

Terry_B63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

wow...I have all of them except the Nintendo ones either in physical or digital version.

Also..Deadpool the Game is missing on that list.

It's really a shame that the Spec Ops reboot didn't continue into a series. Obviously the story in The Line is over. But each game could have delved into the different psychological effects of war as well as exploring different takes on Heart of Darkness. In a sea of mindless military shooters it was nice to finally play a shooter that actually had something to say.

EazyC83d ago

This game was the last of a dying breed, a signifier of where shooter games (and videogames more broadly) COULD have gone if developers didn't pivot so hard into the online services, micro transaction, season pass, yada yada.

New narrative territory exploring the actual art form of gaming and storytelling within it.

Yui_Suzumiya83d ago

A brilliant depiction into what war can really do to a person and doesn't glorify it in any way.

Psychonaut8583d ago

I heard this game might be getting delisted, which is a travesty, this is one that should be preserved forever

Puty82d ago

I think the title was unfortunate - it was when Moder Warfare got big so I assumed it was yet another clone. Fortunately, because ps plus I checked out this gem of a game.
