Sony PS4 vs Xbox One: the 4K war begins

The PS4 and Xbox One both have 4K in their futures one way or another – not least because Microsoft has revealed that Xbox Ones will ship with a 4K-ready HDMI cable.

Smoovekid3942d ago (Edited 3942d ago )

I do not think either will do 4k gaming unless it is pong. Most high end GPUs on PC can't and TVs are all pretty much 1080p at the most. It would be cool if you could game in 1440p or higher resolutions.

Microsoft saying they can is a complete lie, or maybe it's in the clouds.

cl19833942d ago

I don't expect 4k games for quite sometime, mainly because most people don't have the devices to put out a 4k signal yet, and it's still questionable of when 4k tv's will be cost effective.

0ut1awed3942d ago (Edited 3942d ago )

Yea, Smoovekid speaks the truth.

I have a 3930k and a 780 here. If you don't know what that means, ONLY my cpu and gpu cost $1200. Not bragging here just using this to make my point.

It runs metro last light at ~30fps in 1440p.
To be fair that game is a hard hitter. The point is I can see devs getting the consoles to 60fps @1080p with lots of optimization but probably not at launch.

I really hope that they are able to achieve it eventually because I truly want to play next gen consoles. I just doubt I will be able to bear 720p after already being at 1440p on my pc.

BF4 will only be 720p @ 60fps at launch. Compare that to standard launch games in the past and ps4 and xbone should be able to do 1080p @60fps eventually.

ABeastNamedTariq3942d ago

@Outlawed

I'm pretty sure DICE said that they either are at 1080/60, or are targeting it (for consoles). Hope is not lost just yet haha.

3942d ago
0ut1awed3942d ago

@ Slasher

I was the same way until I realized I could get rid of my current monitor at no cost for a 1440p one.

Needless to say the change is staggering. I could never go back. I can't imagine how good 4k is going to look.

Although I think Oculus Rift and Virtuix Omni are what gamers should really be looking forward to.

vigilante_man3942d ago

It will be used for movies in the first instance.

mewhy323941d ago

does the the PS4 actually even come with an HDMI cable?

hkgamer3941d ago

erm... 4k tv will probably be cost effective alot faster than hdtvs were.

I mean my 480i Plasma TV and my 1080p LCD TV were both more expensive than Sony's 4kTV.

Im guessing the only 4ktv that wont be cost effective ones are the 4k OLED tv if that were ever released.

starchild3941d ago

The prices on 4K displays will go down fairly quickly. That isn't the real problem, the main problem is that the consoles simply don't have the power to render games with advanced graphics at that resolution.

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 3941d ago
porkChop3942d ago

Both consoles support 4K for movies. Neither supports 4K for games because it requires way too much power that can be used for more important things.

AzureskyZ3942d ago

Don't know why you got a disagree but you are correct-- 4k is possible on video but the amount of power needed to run 4k fluidly for games isnt going to be available this coming gen--- they could do it but thats going back to the ps3 launch issues where technology cost to much and hiked the price of the console. Most people cant even afford 4k tvs for at least 3-4 years when they come down in price anyways, this along with a new format perhaps hvd <holo> will highlight the next consoles.

mediate-this3942d ago

the hopefuls hope, and the realists tell it like it is

kneon3942d ago

They both have enough power to do some games at 4k. The problem though is if they are using hdmi 1.4 then the maximum frame rate us 24fps. Hdmi 2.0 would solve that but it's still not ready, it keeps getting delayed.

HammadTheBeast3942d ago

Don't worry, maybe at the end of the Gen, the 0.02% with 4k TV's can benefit from it.

PFFT3942d ago

I wouldnt mind playing Pong at 4K res lol

B-radical3942d ago

I wont expect a single gpu to be able to run in 4k for atleast 6 years but then again amd and nvidia are doing pretty impressive things

joefrost003942d ago

The thing thats funny to me is that I keep hearing people call MS liars and lets get 1080p 60fps first MS already have a handful of games coming at launch with that
So I give it four years or so
I am really convinced gamers are pretty dumb
MS never said the cloud could make overall graphics better
They they coyld take some of the computing work and let the cloud do it
In term freeing up some of the CPU to do more graphical work
I keep hearing people try and make it a direct connection with cloud and graphics
No matter how many times MS explain it people will still get it wrong

3942d ago
porkChop3942d ago

Microsoft doesn't need to specify "graphics" when talking about the Cloud. They literally said that the Cloud will increase Xbox One's overall power by 3x, which is impossible. Cloud doesn't work that way. While Microsoft never specifically said graphics, they did in fact try to trick gamers into thinking it.

"They they coyld take some of the computing work and let the cloud do it
In term freeing up some of the CPU to do more graphical work"

CPUs do not handle graphical tasks. That's why they're called CPUs, not GPUs.

I find it hilarious that you say gamers are dumb when you clearly have no idea how Cloud and hardware even work.

mediate-this3942d ago

I think don said him self the coud gives xbone the power of three xbones, but im not entirely sure, correct if im wrong

joefrost003942d ago

You still need the cpu to process it dummy
Its like having 16gb of ram it would be pointless cause you wouldnt have the processing power to use it
If dont know anything please refrain from commenting

both companies ship their consoles with a 4k capable HDMI, thats it, nothing more.
Sony said that 4k photos will be possible, dunno about movies though

CraigandDayDay3942d ago

Of course 4K movies will work on the PS4 (and the xbone probably too). Sony owns 4K content. They'd be crazy to not allow 4K movies on their platform.

joefrost003942d ago

Both said they will do 4k movies
And MS said they can do 4k gaming
Sony said they will .not
It really dont matter to me cause 4k is a tv.buzz word even to 4k tv arent real 4k but thats another conversation
I love how you all just straight call MS liars but if sony said they will do 4k games all of you sony fanboys would be on here not only bragging about it but trying to technically explain how they could
But I guess since sony cant do it MS cant either
Even though its on the box 4kgaming
And that mean all of you on here claiming MS is lying should get you a lawyer and sue them for false advertisement

SlyFoxC3942d ago

jesus joe....learn to type in paragraphs and not that random ass line shit you have there lol. its like trying to read a book written by a blind dude on acid....

KillrateOmega3942d ago

Quite frankly, I don't see 4K gaming as being a significant factor in the console war for quite some time.

cyguration3942d ago

Fully destructible city environments. That's more important than 4K.

Make it happen gaming industry.

Mikeyy3942d ago

This x100!!

This is why people need to get battlefield 4, call of duty will never innovate as long as they are sitting comfortably at 12 million sales per platform. Same thing with Madden. Madden 25 is just now catching up to 2k 2005'.

PFFT3942d ago

Sony should Announce War of the Monster 2 for the PS4. I know its a bit off topic BUT man can you imagine how bad ass that game would look running on the Ps4. The cities were fully destructible. So just the thought of being able to rampage through a big dynamic city gives me goosebumps lol. Man i do hope Sony didnt drop this IP cause that game was freaking awesome.

NarooN3942d ago

Back when Volition were awesome, the first Red Faction let you blow up a great deal of the maps with the Geo-Mod tech...and that was way back in 2001. I still remember the hidden area in one of the caverns about 60% through the game, where if you could find it, you'd get this insta-full health and enviro-suit, and a shitload of weapons including the Fusion rocket launcher.

*sigh* Miss that game.

SchwoererBear3942d ago

I have been dreaming of the day I can go full on Godzilla or Rampage in GTA or anyother game really. It would be really cool to play a fallout game where everything is destructable!

Stsonic3942d ago (Edited 3942d ago )

Yes and when we are ready I think it will be on VR goggles way before consoles. lot's of people game now in 1440p so it won't be long before 4k monitors become more affordable.

B-radical3942d ago

Not till next next gen anyway

SnakeCQC3942d ago

ALL hdmi cables are the same its the spec for the actual slot that changes meaning my hdmi cable that i bought with my original consoles works with 3d 4k etc. The chances are 4k blu rays at most will work but NO games

porkChop3942d ago

That's not actually true. Not all HDMI cables are the same. Even with standard non-4K cables there are differences in bandwidth. 3D 4K would require a ton of bandwidth that your standard $5 HDMI cable wouldn't be able to provide.

SnakeCQC3942d ago

It's been tested like crazy and if i had a monitor that was 4k i would be able to game at 4k. They advertise 4k or 3d on the newer to scam people and make a quick profit. The bandwith on the cables haven't changed at all just the devices with the slot have had upgrades ie a tv that has a higher refresh rate and 3d etc has a 1.4 plug where you can plug in any hdmi cable to get it all setup correctly for 3d. There have been SOOO many online articles to support this.

zugdar3942d ago

Stop. Why would anyone support 4K anytime soon with the practically 0 install base and resources to have such a resolution?

SchwoererBear3942d ago

4k is certainly far off. I think devs need to focus on mastering what is available(1080) before they worry about something that is uncertain. I would say that most people don't have blu ray players yet, I don't think people are ready for another upshift in resolution when people are just now settling in with HD tv's.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

culturedvultures.com
piroh4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies3d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX4d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody4d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

Cacabunga4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_4d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga3d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie2d ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly3d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga3d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit3d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_4d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21833d ago (Edited 3d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies3d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.

Sony CEO says although AI "has been used for creation," it's "not a substitute for human creativity"

..Then Sony will use it like the drop of a hat. They're no different to the others.

isarai5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

They used to be 😞 sure it was always a business, and money's always the priority, but they used to have a very strong stance on supporting artists and creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" was a phrase they touted a few times back in the ps1-ps3 era, a philosophy carried over from their music branch PlayStation was created from. It's not COMPLETELY gone, but it's barely there compared to what it was back then, i just want them to return to that.

Eonjay4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I am highly encouraged by their statement about human creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" is exactly what they are saying. But at the same time, I don't think people understand that Sony is a corporation. If they don't realize growth, they don't get to exist. When you say 'Sony', you are talking about a bunch of investors. To speak about them any other way is a illogical and incorrect. They haven't changed. They have been a group of investors since they became a public business.

isarai5d ago

Ugh, i really wish people would stop gambling people's livelihoods by turning a project/game into their political soapbox. Im all for statements and having your own opinion, but there's more people working on this than just druckman, ham fisting your political beliefs onto just seems inconsiderate for everyone elses job security when it can result in a failure due to people avoiding it for that reason.

I play games for escape, im so tired of nearly every AAA game blatantly dragging real world issues to shove in my face when I'm trying to take a break from it all. They don't even bother to be subtle about it, quite the opposite, it's blasted and force fed to you and it's just getting exhausting

Einhander19725d ago

People are taking a whole interview and cutting it down to clips that make him look bad and take what he actually was saying out of context. For example he also said things like this AI has "ethical issues we need to address"

-Foxtrot5d ago

@Einhander

Why defend him at this point?

It’s not taking things out of context, he said what he said.

Old ND would never talk about soulless AI taking over so many creative things they are well known for. The whole “ethical issues” is just a good PR spin people who push this crap fall back on to make their statements not seem as bad. So many AI lovers do this.

AI has no place is so many creative based things.

Einhander19725d ago

Well yeah, because everyone else is using it so they need to stay competitive. It's the same as paid online, they didn't want to go that route but their competition was making so much money they needed to add paid online just to keep up.

RaiderNation4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

AI will never replace humans in game development in terms of conceptualizing new games. Humans still need to come up with the ideas and what they want to implement. However much of the day to day menial coding could be AI driven to reduce production time and team size. I could also see AI being used for bug testing/optimization that could lead to better quality games at launch. I'm actually very optimistic about how AI can positively impact game development.

Good statement but hopefully this holds up

NotoriousWhiz4d ago

People that aren't software developers just don't understand the benefits of AI. People who's only exposure to A.I is the Terminator movie and other related sci fi films won't understand the benefits it provides.

It's not about replacing human labor. It's about making human labor easier.

Many years ago, I had laser eye surgery done. It was performed by a robot. The doctor took my measurements and calibrated the machine to make sure it would do what needed be done. And then the robot corrected my vision in 10 seconds.

15 years later and I still have 20/20 vision.

Eonjay4d ago

AI in and of itself is not a 'bad'. Money is bad. Money is evil, and corporations will do whatever they can to get more of it. They will find ways to implement AI to replace as may jobs as possible. This isn't even up for debate. It is the charge of the corporation to maximize returns for the investors. They have no choice. I'm a developer and I know that my job will absolutely be replaced. Therefore, I have decided to become an AI dev. AI has a lot of potential to help us solve problem on a scale most can't even imagine. The issue, as ever is that our monetary system only ever allows us to focus on greed and fiscal growth.

But I am a pragmatist. Perhaps an AI model can be built to help protect us from our most dangerous instincts and habits. And perhaps Congress can pass laws to protect us from people who would use AI to manipulate and control us (spoiler: they wont).

RaiderNation4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Progress is inevitable. Nobody driving cars today is complaining that the horse and buggy is no longer around. Yes, some jobs will be lost but guess what? With innovation comes new job opportunities. It's how the cycle of the job market works.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead8d ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan8d ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in
