Press Play: Microsoft wants "unique", "weird" indie games for Xbox Live

Is the "microstudio" approach key to winning the next gen indie battle?

Jek_Porkins4017d ago

Very smart move by Microsoft, they need to attract different types of developers, games and gamer's. I cannot wait to see the new approach they will be taking with the next Xbox.

Getting rid of MS Points is also another step in the right direction. May 21st is going to be a very telling day indeed.

AngelicIceDiamond4017d ago

Yep next week. After months of terrible rumor monsters we only have less than a week now.

JoGam4017d ago

I said it before and will say it again, indies is the future. Sony is doing it. MS is doing it too. Great for the industry.

dirigiblebill4017d ago

Focusing on a few indie projects should improve quality, but I'd prefer the scale of an App Store personally.

kingmushroom4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

so their following Sony's steps, thats a win for indie devs

fermcr4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Actually ... Sony's following Microsoft's steps in relation to indie devs.

kingmushroom4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

not really sonys has been all about supporting indie devs and allowing developers the freedom to make the game they want, and they've made it better by slashing out their concept approval method.

Edit: its just funny how now MS comes out saying how they care about idie, lol.

Utalkin2me4017d ago

Lol, Sony following MS steps in relation to indie devs? Are you serious? There has been nothing but complaints from indie developers of how MS runs their indie development.

ziggurcat4017d ago

"Actually ... Sony's following Microsoft's steps in relation to indie devs."

no. sony has always been strong supporters of indie developers.

greenpowerz4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Supporting Indie games/devs looking for different experiences is something Sony invented :P

Where do you people come from? Had to mark you for trolling... Sorry

Nice edit LOL. Left the trolling part though

Utalkin2me4017d ago

Shame we just can't take your last bubble, but it "is what it is". Might want to do some research before spouting nonsense.

ebreda4017d ago

Really? Am I mistaken or did Sony launch an "Indie Games" section on the PSN just last week, while XBL has it for more than 3 years?

It doesn't mean they'll do a better job coming May 21st, but so far XBL has thousands of indie games available under that tab on the home menu. I'm sure that counts as "first".

DigitalRaptor4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Greenpowerz.

Sony actually financially supports the indie devs and opens a lot more opportunity post-launch. The games they support are promoted on the PSN store main page and across the web, not just a channel on the store that people may or may not visit.

I respect that MS did a lot for indie devs on the 360 with their XNA program, but after that they don't do much else. Then there's problems that have sent many devs flocking.

Sony's approach this gen to indie games is different to MS and whilst both platforms have their differences, these indie devs have taken notice that Sony is fairly more open and supportive of different ideas. The Unfinished Swan, Journey, Papo & Yo, Pixeljunk, Datura are some examples.

I think it's good that MS is taking this approach too, as the more variety the better, across all platforms. To say Sony is copying is kinda like suggesting that Sony wasn't looking to make their platforms more accessible in the wake of the early PS3 days.

maniacmayhem4017d ago

MS included an indie channel that was ran and managed by the indie community. They also had the lowest fees for submission for Indie games to be put on their console. And provided easy to use tools for ANY indie developer to use and submit directly to their console or mobile device.

Don't be fooled by a couple of devs for getting short changed by MS, there are also devs that applauded MS for even giving indie games a chance on their console.

So I too find it funny that Sony is now all of a sudden this great white hope for indie devs.

But I do agree with any steps by any major Console manufacturer to put these smaller games more in the spotlight.

Bigpappy4017d ago

No need to fight over who supported indie developers better. Just compare XBLA to PSN and see which service has more indie games for download. I think you will quickly realize that XBLA had supported indie games on a much, much larger scale than PSN. This gen XBLA is where indies sold they games on console.

MS is still very much invested in making games for it's system and they are also hoping for it's machine do to much more.

Can this machine truly do everything?
It will definitely try.

Indie or low budget games I feel will be the focus for this upcoming gen. Making low costing games that have focus on gameplay rather than overblown graphics and hour long drawn out CG cut scenes.

There will still be those types of games but I expect them to be treated like summer blockbuster movies and not the main focus like the current devs are doing.

Edit:
That Max and the Brotherhood game looks fantastic. Will definitely support and pick it up.

Jek_Porkins4017d ago

Yea, I watched that Max And The Brotherhood gameplay on that video and was blown away! I have never heard of it before, but if that is the quality they are going for, I'm going to have a great time with the next gen XBLA.

Root4017d ago

Well I think they first need to work on stop restricting them a ton and scaring them away

maniacmayhem4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Restricting? Care to explain?

Edit @ Root:
Aaah yes, there have been some vocal claims about the process that MS has in placed. Take it from me that a lot of that comes from old video game submissions that I feel MS adopted from other established game console manufacturers. Those practices are not only draconian but seriously out of date for today's market.

Especially when everyone and their grandparents can make a decent game and have it available to everyone.

I do hope they change their policies especially since Nintendo and Sony has done so as well.

Root4017d ago (Edited 4017d ago )

Well for starters....$40000...just to patch your game

The fact that they don't offer enough freedom

It becomes stressful for them with MS rules

I don't think I need to explain to be honest, articles have popped up on here enough about MS and how their treatment to indie devs isn't what it used to be

http://www.xblafans.com/jon...

"On top of development costs, there are lawyers, fees and ambiguity to sort through that cause an equally overwhelming headache."

"These laments come hot on the heels of Brian Provinciano who publicly declaring on Twitter how difficult it was to get Retro City Rampage onto XBLA. Polytron’s Phil Fish has also gone on record in the past to say the costs for developing on XBLA are absurd."

You just get the feeling MS have this attitude where it's like

"It's either OUR WAY or the highway....do as your told or else"

http://m.uk.ign.com/article...

" that dealing with Sony was akin to a “coffee shop chat,” while Microsoft exuded an “intimidating corporate vibe.” He spoke about how, when he became vocal about the problems dealing with Microsoft, they cancelled the planned release of Retro City Rampage on Xbox Live and, according to Wired, “forced him to resubmit the game through the arduous approvals process and go through an extra six months of negotiations that required him to submit the game through an outside publisher to get it released.”

Making matters worse, Microsoft accidentally sold the game for $10 instead of the planned $15 for a time, cutting into his profits."

Microsoft's Absurd Antics Have Me Scared For Dishonored And Arkane Lyon's Future

With Arkane Austin no more and Lyon living for who knows how long, the superb Dishonored is in serious danger; Microsoft cannot be trusted.

Relientk7716h ago

I love the Dishonored series so much and really want Dishonored 3. Microsoft better not screw this up.

JEECE13h ago

I mean, I think the fans will probably kill Arkane Lyon by cooking up reasons to hate whatever they do next without playing it. I've never seen a game so artificially disliked as Deathloop.

thesoftware73013h ago

Lol, why don't we just say, we are worried about all studios owned by MS now. They will keep closing studios until they have none left ...🙄

Skuletor10h ago

Just merge them all into a single studio, have it churn out a single Call of Duty every year and call it a day, lol.

Barlos10h ago

Don't be scared, you'll be fine.

Skuletor9h ago

It's exputer, fine is one word I would not associate with them.

Profchaos9h ago

I think it's becoming clear based on matt bootys comments there's no future for any IP that can't sell above 10 million within the launch window. But is also a small game that gives them prestige

/S it's beyond a joke right now

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus232d ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

KwietStorm_BLM1d 23h ago

So you do understand it or..?

rokos1d 22h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb331d 21h ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC1d 11h ago

@romulus23
That is not why MS buys studios. They might continue to buy because it's about taking that sweet sweet IP out of the corporate husks of their acquisitions.

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear211d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

jwillj2k42d ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC1d 11h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon615861d 20h ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k41d 16h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

jwillj2k41d 16h ago

Not true when it comes to mass layoff do your research.

RNTody2d ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead2d ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage1d 23h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast2d ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn19792d ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

Phil and his team need to be gone

lodossrage1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

glenn19791d 20h ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

lodossrage1d 23h ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.

Microsoft Opening Xbox Mobile Game Store in July

The Xbox brand is expanding, as an Xbox mobile game store is opening this coming July where Microsoft will brings its "first-party portfolio."

Jin_Sakai4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

“Bond adds that they will start on the web”

This will go nowhere.

Nice knowing you Xbox. This is what happens when the house never gets cleaned.

MrDead4d ago

The only this MS is expanding is the amount of feculence it sprays on everyone who just want to enjoy gaming and make games.

The best thing MS can do for the gaming industry is leave and never return.

XiNatsuDragnel4d ago

Good luck with this even it might not succeed.
