Hands on with Wii U: In reality it's a bit of a gimmick | Digitally Downloaded

Digitally Downloaded writes: "I just worry that anyone going in to the Wii U expecting the same joy and wonder they experienced with the original Wii may just find this console a little lacking in genuine innovation."

"iPad or other high-end tablets"

It is NOT a tablet!!!!!

Lazyeye794232d ago

He is not saying that it is a tablet, he is stating that the touch screen is of lower quality when compared to the "iPad or other high-end tablets".

AO1JMM4232d ago (Edited 4232d ago )

He simply could have stated is has a low resolution but he didn't. He made the comparison and with the amount of casual gamers out there thinking the damn thing is a Wii not a new console, all he is doing is spreading misinformation.
I see it as another journalist (I use that word loosely) spitting out BS just to get more website hits.

Lower quality to this Matt guy apparently equals lower resolution. I cannot take him seriously.

3-4-54232d ago

Because all a tablet has is the touch screen. It relies upon it.

This CONTROLLER does not.

Neonridr4230d ago

I should hope it's of lower quality. I don't want a $500 ipad as my controller to my game system. Kinda defeats the purpose of keeping the costs down. Of course something that costs that much more is going to be a little bit better in the touch screen department.

Yeah yeah, all Nintendo systems have gimmicks, we get it. In fact I think we should start replacing the word gimmick with "an interesting aspect of a Nintendo system". Or if that sounds too positive you could break out the dusty thesaurus and replace gimmick with "contrived object". Or you could just keep using the word gimmick and make me question whether or not I've already read this article a hundred times on a hundred different blogs.

Edit: By the way, this is a good, well thought out article. The title just does a poor job of summing up the contents.

This comment is just made of awesome. Bubble up.

Benjamminkno4232d ago

Replace "gimmick" with "idea we will emulate at a later date".

kikizoo4232d ago

Like apple, they are smart enough to make you believe they are inovating, but in reality, they are always late to the party...

Slapshot824232d ago

Gimmick defined: "an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, especially one designed to attract attention or increase appeal."

Yes, it's a "gimmick." But, if you read the article, you'll find that Matt actually went after his hand-on preview and preordered one for himself. If fact, most every writer for our site all are fans of Nintendo.

Regardless of what we like, we're still objective to what's going on in the industry as a whole and whether Nintendo calls it a "tablet" or a "GamePad," it's still what it is -- a large non-resistive touch-screened console with additional buttons/joysticks.

For me personally, I was very interested in buying a Wii U until I realized that the iPad Mini was going to (likely) release over the holidays and that's now what I'm going to spend my money on. Saying that the Wii U isn't (or any other gaming console) isn't in competition with mobile/tablet gaming is, well... it's time to really look at the numbers and see how the market for dedicated gaming consoles is rapidly depleting. Do I want them to go away? Heck no I don't... Ever! But, they're impacting the industry faster than anything before it and things like Wii U are what will keep dedicated consoles sticking around -- gimmicky fun!

Neonridr4230d ago

enjoy your hardcore gaming on your ipad mini then. The Wii U can enjoy the best of both worlds as they can have games like Angry Birds, or insert a Unity engine game that can be played off the gamepad, or they can have the full console experience games like Zelda, Mario, Metroid that the tablet users do not have. I like gaming on my ipad for a few minutes here or there, but I have yet to find a console defining experience on an Apple or Android device.

Touchscreen based universal control functionality integrating netflix, hulu and your cable access is not a gimmick. It's fucking awesome.

LiquidSword934232d ago

How it is lacking innovation? I no understand. Explain prease.

wishingW3L4232d ago

because there's a little something called Nintendo DS which has a dual-screen too but it really isn't that great.

Shnazzyone4231d ago

Yeah, Nintendo DS was so not a great system that totally didn't have tons of awesome games to play. the idea of utilizing 2 screens to improve an experience has been an abysmal failure. I mean look at the 3ds not a single game to play and it's been selling terribly.

*rolls eyes*

ElectricKaibutsu4231d ago

wishingW3L was being subtlely sarcastic.

LLJAF4232d ago

Touchscreen gaming is a gimmick as a whole but Wii U gives you options not available anywhere else before. Local multiplayer is a plus point cos its online capable aswell and its not a dying art, sales numbers of mario kart, NSMB wii, just dance on top of the Wii itself proves its not dead. CoD, AC, Zombi amongst others gives core gaming options from the start and not even mentioned in the article. Its only local multiplayer is it?

Slapshot824232d ago

No, it isn't, but he instead focused on the local multiplayer, because that's what is *different* about Wii U -- it offers a great new array of ways for local multiplayer fans to enjoy, just like the Wii did. You took a compliment and turned it into something that it wasn't. Online multiplayer is everywhere! Why focus on that when it's being done by every device with an Internet connection?

Zelda Replay: Majora's Mask

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Is Ocarina of Time as legendary as I remembered it? For the most part, yes. In spite of a handful of missteps — a few obtuse puzzles, some tedious backtracking, and a clunky stealth sequence — I don't believe the last 23 years have been unkind to it. Ocarina remains a brilliant example of the medium, a landmark game that shaped the future of its own franchise and 3D gaming in general. After more than two decades it retains its inventive dungeon design, challenging puzzles, dynamic combat, wistful storyline, unforgettable music, and empowering open-air freedom. I feel confident calling it one of the greatest games of the fifth generation, even if I'm no longer prepared to list it among the five best games ever made."

Pure unadulterated fun. They don't make them like this anymore...especially not the triple A industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic10d ago

Back when video rental was a thing, I rented out Majoria's Mask, I never finished it though. I did buy the 3DS version before the eshop shutdown, so maybe one day I'll finally play through the whole thing, it's amazing how well these games hold up though. I briefly played Ocarina of Time for a while and it was really fun.

Wii U games that still haven't been ported to Switch

The Nintendo Switch is potentially nearing its lifespan, and several Wii U games haven't found their way over as ports yet.

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

Z50118d ago

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga18d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

Profchaos18d ago

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas17d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj17d ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Chocoburger17d ago

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
