After viewing Mortal Kombat 1’s cryptic ending, many players agree that the game’s conclusion raised more questions than it answered. We know firsthand that the developers behind Mortal Kombat 1 know how to craft a great story using its iconic characters, and this time, it was no different. The story ends on a rather dark trail, and we’re here to shed some light on it.
How Does Mortal Kombat 1 End
At the end of Mortal Kombat 1, Liu Kang and Shang Tsung are seen in their final showdown. Shang Tsung had diluted Liu Kang’s powers by absorbing them in his Jade Stone, making him much stronger and leaving a much weaker Liu Kang behind.
As part of the story, Liu Kang has to beat Shang Tsung in order to become the Keeper of Time and restore his powers. A series of events take place where Liu Kang has to gather his army before jumping into Shang Tsung’s timeline, where they engage in a final battle.
Of course, Liu Kang comes out as the eventual victor of this epic showdown, but we’re left with many plot holes and unanswered questions by the end of Mortal Kombat 1. Let’s dive into how these events may be preparing us for future Mortal Combat titles or its DLCs.

What Does The Ending Of MK1 Mean?
Following a story with multiple timelines can be incredibly difficult, which is why the MK1 threw fans in for a bit of a rollercoaster. In order to understand, you need to go back to the events of MK11‘s Aftermath. There, Liu Kang and Shang Tsung’s continuous battles opened up rifts in the timelines, which eventually led to alternate endings, all of which are canon
That’s right, depending on who you pick in MK11, you’ll get an alternate ending for Mortal Kombat 1. This doesn’t mean that the events that unfold in your playthrough are exactly what happened. In MK1, there are multiple timelines, and the ending where you win is actually only one of the timelines.
However, all of these endings – the one where Liu Kang wins as well as the one where Shang Tsung wins – lead up to the MK1 timeline, where characters from all parallel timelines join together to engage in an epic final battle. This battle finally puts an end to Shang Tsung’s reign of terror, as he and his generals are imprisoned by the end of MK1.
Additionally, the post-credit scene opens up the possibility of another potential plotline. After the battle ends, we can see Havik entering and finishing off Jax, who’d lost their limbs after the battle. It opens up the potential for Havik to be the new antagonist in future DLCs or storylines.
