The recent announcement from Sony required Helldivers 2 players to create PSN accounts, by any means possible. Now that those accounts are no longer mandatory, players report some trouble while trying to delete their PSN accounts.
This whole weekend was dominated by the Helldivers 2 Community VS Sony battle. Sony announced that all Helldivers 2 players must make a PlayStation Network account until a set date, or they will not be able to play the game anymore. As everyone saw, this sparked a “rebellion” in the Community, resulting in review bombing, refunds, and the general protest.
PC Players Did Not Want to Make PSN Accounts
Even though Sony asked for everyone, even PC players to make an account, a lot of them refused. Players did not want to do it, for security reasons, and mainly due to the fact that PSN is not supported in many countries. The “solution” was to make an account but set a supported country as your own, even though fake credentials can get you banned. This led to two outcomes. Either don’t make an account and stop playing, or make an account with fake credentials that may get you banned. This has put those who already made accounts with fake credentials in a tight spot. Especially, since once you made your PSN account, there is nothing much you can change about it.
But, in the end, the Helldivers 2 Community won, and the request for PSN accounts was removed. Now, all that is left is for the PC players to delete their hastily made accounts, for security reasons.
Players Report Being Unable to Delete Their New PSN Accounts
One Helldiver, named PurpleWaterTower on Reddit, reported that he asked Sony to delete his PSN accounts. They would not let him. There are screenshots of his conversation with PlayStation Support. The answer is that they cannot terminate his account due to “security reasons”. When asked what those security reasons are, Sony was “unable to provide further commentary”. As you’d expect, this was not received warmly.
Others chimed in with their similar experiences. Like toxictorta, who received the answer “We don’t have enough information in order to verify that this is your account (despite the fact I was logged into it, provided username, ID, and password), you’ll have to make a purchase in order for us to verify that this is indeed you before we can close your account.”
We understand that this is to be 100% sure that the owner wants to remove the account, not a hacker or something similar. But this walks a fine line between security and extortion.
