Helldivers 2 Players Share the Best AA Weapons to Fight Gunship Patrols

If you remember that huge patch that the developers issued in mid-June, you might also remember that they snuck in some features without announcing them. Ever since that patch, the Gunship Patrols have been a thorn in the players’ eyes. They’re very hard to deal with, and it’s almost impossible to find an easy way to destroy them. The Helldivers 2 players are offering their strongest tips on which AA (anti-aircraft) weapons work the best against Gunship Patrols.

Helldivers 2 Community Has Tried Out All the AA Weapons

One devoted player, NicholasWFuller, has seemingly had a lot of trouble dealing with those pesky Gunship Patrols. They took to Reddit to ask their community how to best deal with the Gunships. This player said: ” Are any of the Turrets already rock stars at Anti-Air? If not, I need them to be. Those goddamn Gunship Patrols at level 9 are just too much”.

Being a helpful community, a lot of players jumped in to share their favorites. Dedrance went straight to the point: “Autocannon, Laser, HMG, AMR can all deal pretty reliably with a group of Gunships. All the various AT weapons are good at taking down 1 or 2 but then you have nothing for the others. The Airburst is, unfortunately, complete shit”.

This helpful player continued: “Medium Pen/explosive primaries can take them down pretty OK. HMG Encampment and the Autocannon Sentry are pretty good greens”. Another player, meh84f, completed the list by adding: “Rocket Sentry can handle them well too”.

HatfieldCW offered their two cents: “Autocannon or Laser Cannon are the best support weapons for Gunships. Multiple kills in rapid succession, fairly easy aiming (focus on a specific engine), and high mobility for lining up shots and using cover. HMG and AMR kill more slowly, but they can do it. Scorcher feels like a chore, but gets the job done.”

This player continued with their very extensive list: “Autocannon or rocket sentries can do it, but it’s sometimes frustrating when they don’t prioritize the gunships. Quasar, Recoilless Rifle, and EATs do well, but ammo is usually limited. Commando takes two shots most of the time. Spear is extremely reliable, but you need a plan to keep it fed”.

Is the Spear Useful Against Gunship Patrols?

The FAF-14 Spear has been the main object of discussion. Should the Helldivers 2 players carry this AA weapon to fight the Gunship Patrols? According to SailorsKnot: “Spear is great and super reliable, but slow. HMG absolutely f**ks up Gunships, if you’re alright with being able to lead the ship a bit when you’re aiming”.

Alive_Tumbleweed_144 disagreed: “Spear is pretty bad since you only get 4 rockets and gunship patrols come in 4s. So if you’re alone you better be full on ammo. I’ve tried the spear but found many situations where I deal with one patrol, but by the time a second patrol shows up I only have 1 or 2 rockets left”.

Captain_Bolter offered a solution for the Spear limitations. They said: “I resupplied a SPEAR user on my team 7-8 times one game and took down a ton of passing patrols. It got to the point where we were just shooting gunship patrols on the opposite side of the map because it was fun”.

As for us, we are partial to EATs. If you aren’t a fan, we suggest you go try it out, you might be surprised. The current Major Order is against the Automatons, so the timing is perfect. You might see us somewhere in the Andromeda sector, spreading democracy with our trusty EAT-s.
