No other Planetary Hazard has made such an uproar as the Meteor Storm. Since Patch 01.000.100, Planetary Hazards have been added to the Environmental Effects pool. The Hazard depends on the planet, and they can appear on any difficulty. The original idea is that Planetary hazards will enhance gameplay and immersion, and add more danger to Helldivers and aliens alike. But, Meteor Storms were received the worst of them all in Helldivers 2 and were ready for a nerf.
The Problem With Meteor Storms in Helldivers 2
Occasional Meteor showers shouldn’t be a problem. The issue began when those Meteors started falling way too often and way too accurately. The players were not too happy about it, with one saying: “…random and practically unavoidable death is not a fun or cool mechanic and can ruin runs with no skill involved.” Others agree, saying that Meteor Storms can be responsible for around 50% of squad deaths in their games.
That is a little too much for something random. Imagine the frustration of losing your last “life” due to bad weather, or dropping a bunch of Samples due to RNG. It is one thing to die from enemy fire, that is (mostly) fair and square. It’s a completely different matter to die from a random meteor falling from the sky.
More and more players have voiced their frustration, with some on the verge of quitting the game altogether. Others just completely avoided the Meteor Storm planets. Thankfully, the devs noticed that and have nerfed the problematic Planetary Hazard.
Have Meteor Storms Finally Been Fixed?
On March 20, Patch 1.000.103 was released and it addressed, among other things, the issue of Meteor Storms and other problematic Hazards. The Meteors will, from now on, spawn less frequently and have their damage, velocity, and explosion radius reduced. Moreover, they should be easier to notice and thus avoid. Time will tell if these changes will fix the issue with Meteor Storms, or will a complete removal be needed.
Planetary Hazards are a great addition to Helldivers 2 and really enhance the feeling of fighting in alien environments. They should be a factor during the mission, but not a game-breaking one. The Helldivers community is not one to unnecessarily whine about the game’s difficulty. But, there is a difference between a challenge and pointless, random murder-rocks where no skill is involved. We hope that this nerf will make Helldivers 2 enjoyable for everyone once more and bring players back to planets with Meteor Storms.
