Fortnite – How to Sit Out (2024)

Fortnite characters battle in the streets of Mega City

Fortnite remains one of the most widely popularized battle royale games to date, helped in part by the regular introduction of new seasons filled with brand-new locations, skins, and more. Perhaps the biggest draw to Fortnite, however, is the matchmaking feature that allows you to team up with other players to complete missions and participate in matches. Needless to say, there’s plenty for players to do, but there comes a time when you need to take a break and sit one out — literally.

Luckily, you’ll always have the option to sit out from a match in Fortnite while the rest of your squad moves on to the next one. What’s more, doing so won’t compromise your place in the lobby, so taking a quick break can’t hurt if you need to grab something to eat or rest up. Here’s how you can sit out a match in Fortnite in a few simple steps.

How to Sit Out in Fortnite

If you want to get a quick break in after a few matches in Fortnite, you can easily sit one out — or several. You need to be in a party to do this, so you’ll first have to either create or join another player’s party to reap the benefits. Essentially, sitting out will indicate to other members of your party that you won’t be participating in the next match, enabling them to go on without you. This is great, as you won’t need to worry about leaving your squad hanging or losing your place in the lobby while you’re away. Just follow these steps to sit out a match in Fortnite.

From the Fortnite lobby:

  • Open the menu in the top-right corner of your screen.
  • You’ll see your icon among the other players in your party. Click your profile icon.
  • Look for your Participation status.
  • Toggle your status from Playing to Sitting Out.
  • Your character’s posture will change, indicating you’re Sitting Out.

Note that you will continue to sit out from matches until you toggle your participation status back to Playing. Once you return to the game, be sure to change your status to ensure your place in the next match alongside your party members.

What Does Sitting Out Mean in Fortnite?

In Fortnite, setting your participation status to Sitting Out simply allows you to take some time away from the game while allowing your party members to move on to the next match without you. Just toggle your status to notify your team, then hop back into the game for the next match when you’re ready.

Do You Need to Leave Your Party to Sit Out in Fortnite?

You don’t need to leave your party to sit out a match in Fortnite. You can sit out by simply toggling your participation status without consequence. For this reason, the feature is an absolute lifesaver, as it can be incredibly frustrating to leave your party and wait for another invitation before queuing up once more. In the long run, sitting out can save you some valuable time while playing Fortnite.
