How to Catch Bugs in Coral Island

Trying to figure out how to catch bugs in Coral Island? You’re not alone. We’ll cover everything you need to know to start netting as many species as possible from early on in your playthrough.

When you first arrive in Starlet Town in Coral Island, you’ll find that the community once revered for its nature reserves and culture has received an F rating following a devastating oil spill. In order to better the town’s reputation, you’ll need to put in some hard work. This involves donating various species of bugs to the local museum. Fortunately, you’ll be gifted the tools you need within your first few days on the island. However, catching caterpillars, moths, and the like can be tough, as these tiny critters are easily scared off. Here’s how to master bug-catching and donate new species to the museum in Coral Island.

While bug-catching is available from early on in Coral Island, you’ll likely need to practice with your net a bit before you manage to snag any bugs. This is because there’s a trick to successfully nabbing different species, and it involves timing your motions perfectly.

First and foremost, you should add your net to your quickbar for easy access. This is important, as you’ll need to quickly switch your active tool to the net when you spot a bug. That said, you shouldn’t get too hasty with your movements, or else you’ll scare away your target. If you startle a bug, back off for a moment.

Pay attention to the path of the bug and follow closely. You’ll see a white meter appear above it, indicating its awareness of your presence and, more importantly, how much time you have to make the catch. Common species, such as flies and caterpillars, will lend you more time to swing your net. Conversely, coveted moths and butterflies scare easily, requiring you to dash and swing fast.

You can give yourself a speed boost by dashing with the following controls:

PCPress Left Shift
PS5Press Circle
Xbox Series X|SPress B

Depending on the species, I’ve found that approaching from the rear is a reliable method to net bugs easily. This goes doubly so for elusive moths, butterflies, and even praying mantises.

How to Get a Net in Coral Island

After a few days spent on the island, you’ll receive a letter from Sunny and Eleanor in your mailbox. The couple asks you to meet them at the Beach Shack, promising welcome gifts. Upon your arrival, they’ll hand over a bug-catching net and a fishing rod.

These items can be equipped in much the same way as other tools, like your pickaxe and watering can. Once they’re accessible from your quickbar, you can start catching various species to donate to the local museum.
