Destiny isn’t perfect… but it’s brilliant enough to be GOTY

Destiny is not a perfect game. Its plot is vague, partly the result of a grand ambition to have a narrative that evolves over the next ten years, throughout the course of an entire console generation (and partly because, yeah, Bungie messed up). There are bugs, although most have been squashed by post-release patches. Some of the systems are poorly explained, perhaps the result of Bungie's desire to keep players learning and discovering. And right now, there are only four environments, which has led many to dismiss the game as 'limited and boring'. Yet, in spite of all these perceived faults, Destiny stands head-and-shoulders above any other game in 2014.

Hell no it is not "brilliant"; even if one likes it a lot--there isn't anything special or brilliant about it.

Also a game vying for GOTY in 2014 doesn't mean much since it was the year of the remakes.

I play a ton of destiny but I totally agree. I was sold on a lot more than what I bought and that was from bungie talking not all the hype.

Oh yes it is brilliant in terms of a console fps with rpg and mmo elements. There is no other Fps on a console that offers what it does! Every thing you do in the game single player and multiplayer matters and goes hand in hand! It's definitely my GOTY as its all I play now. Every other game I buy or bought has just sat to the side!

Strikes are intense and fun every single time
Raids are probably the best cooperative experience you will ever have in gaming

Anything that was wrong with the game has already been changed of patched to please players. .

And while ressources , weapons , bugs and a few things were definitively fixed ... the biggest sources of complaints , like the lack of a proper story and campaign for a game that DO want to involve you with it and the universe hasnt really be addressed .

And there was no way it would with just the one dlc already partially worked upon

I enjoyed the game for what it was, but it is honestly a pretty bad game overall.

Strikes are fun with you friends until you do them 20 times each and that's all there is to do...

PvP is an unbalanced laggy mess.

The raid is just a strike for 6 people with no direction on what to do or where to go, with some goofy mechanics added in like the crap with the artifact. I thought the raid was the worst part of the game. Absolutely terrible design.

I was foolhardy and bought the DLC assuming I was going to play the game for a long time, but I'll likely never play it again.

It has no story, and is shallow in terms of content. They expect you to play the same set of missions dozens of times.

GotY is one thing, but Bethesda got a Developer of the Year award for that bug nest. I love the series, but that was a joke. Dark Souls got robbed that year.

Dead Island won at least one GotY award too, and that's the buggiest thing I've ever played in my life. That includes Skyrim on PS3.

Before gamers start writing off others who complaints as "haters", people need to realize that their worries prove the exact opposite. I play the game and I do like Destiny but there are so many things that they could have done to make me love the game. I know there are a number of individuals who feel the same as well so they voice their concerns in order for Bungie to push the envelope and deliver to an unforgettable experience.

I mean are people truly content with what they got? If you had a chance to push Bungie into adding another 3 planets in the next DLC pack would you actually make your voice heard or are you pleased with getting the same amount of content that Dark Below offer?

If I didn't like it, I wouldn't be here complaining but if nothing is being done to raise expectations, Bungie will lose a customer.

Also giving this GOTY status means this stands among games like Metal Gear Solid and The Last Of Us which we all know its far from being anything close.....

I disagree with this post completely. It puzzles me how Bungie lost the magic going from Halo to Destiny. Even their games Marathon and Myth had very interesting lore but that is almost non-existent in Destiny. I had such high hopes for Destiny being a a crazy Halo fan but it's one of the biggest disappointments for me. I refuse to further invest in this franchise and will support devs who don't have shady business practices.

I just think that for a game that's been in development for over 5 years by a studio with the pedigree of Bungie it should have been way more than what we got. From the moment Destiny was announced I was hooked. Between the concept art and the art style, it was definitely my cup of tea. I didn't expect it to become such a shallow game that is based on grinding in a Borderlands-esque world. I know many people like it but for someone who has been such an avid Bungie supporter for over 13 years, I expected a lot more from them.

I dont hate it , but in the end it wasnt anything major for most people and didnt deliver its full potential . For a game that presented itself as something with the potential of truly interacting with the city and smart citizens , among other things ... we ended up with a mediocre cliché story , a bland hero , but most of all bizarre gameplay limitations in a sandbox , mediocre Ai , not even a true police presence to keep you in line .... and hardly enough hacking possibilities

Destiny got at least a gameplay and co-op that is still called addictive and very well done , despite its many flaws

Personally , with Watch Dogs , i expected something in spirit along the way of "Person of Interest" the game . ANd it's a pity , Ubisoft clearly wanted to capitalize on modern relevance of hacking in fictions , in an era full of hacktivism , Anonymous , internet conspiracy and délusions ... yet delivered something truly weak .

It felt instead like a modern assassin creed game featuring Desmond or someone similar , without the wealth of fictionalized history and the license . And a step back to assassin creed even

Destiny is high on my list for GOTY, I have my complaints about the game but its the only game this year that I've sunk over 100 hours into and fun all the way with it. Granted that I have not played every game released this year but out of the stuff I did play Destiny is just one of the best. The locations, graphics, soundtrack and gunplay just really did it for me.

Shadow of Mordor is brilliant but it just falls a little short of goty material, same goes for Alien, totally loved it but not as much as Destiny. I'm absolutely loving Elite Dangerous too but that game isn't out just yet (just a few days to go) and I've not spent enough time with the beta and gamma to make my mind up on it.

It goes without saying that GTA V is simply amazing but imo that's a 2013 game. Same goes for Last of Us Remaster, 2013 game really. Farcry 4 is also fantastic but it was just too similar to FC3. Also loved Hearthstone to death but I cant bring myself to give a card game goty.

Hey guys, I have a boner for first person shooters. However, I understand they're all the same thing under a different story/theme, but now that there's one that maintains a stroke of repetitive depth, I'd like to suggest it should be game of the year.

I mean, this time, my feeble gamer-mind has more to do than aim and click at things that look like they might hurt me, and that's groundbreaking enough to hold the title of game of the year.

Dear Destiny Player,

We've noticed that your friends have stopped playing and you haven't found people to join up with. Because of this we've now patched the game to make it harder to solo anything in this game.

We won't even think of making it easier on you with matchmaking, like we did in the beta and story. After level 20 you MUST be constantly contacting people and joining in what THEY want to do, or else you have NO CHANCE to do what YOU want to do. Unless you have a silver tongue and can get everyone else into doing what YOU want to do.

Meanwhile, those strikes you weren't able to play, and that we made harder to solo, well...they're gone unless you pony up more money to play stuff you can't play solo. You had your chance to be facebook superstar and declined, now this is your punishment.

On top of this, all the grinding you did has pretty much been reset, and those weapons you tried to solo stuff with, are now not as good either. So...harder levels, with less firepower.

OG Destiny wasn't bad, aside from the rush job and all the cut out content. The gameplay is quite good. But with EVERY patch, they keep taking something away, destroying your progress with idiotic changes, and making stuff harder unless you play it THEIR way. Destiny today is far, far worse then what it was at launch.

I don't hate the game, the game itself is quite fun, it's just Bungie can't get it's butt out of the way of that fun, and have to be debbie downer all the time with their idiocy.

Again GOTY material? Not with the changes, nor without the content.
