Game Informer: The Evil Within Review

"The Evil Within is a wonderfully horrifying experience, but I have some minor gripes. Texture pop-in is distracting from time to time, and a handful of archaic trial-and-error instant-death moments – like fleeing down a hallway from an invulnerable beast – become tedious instead of scary after a few repeated attempts. I died 64 times, and while I know the vast majority of those were my fault, the rest of my failures felt like remnants of the worst elements of the modern Resident Evil games. Speaking of which, the story and actors are as cheesy and heavy-handed as ever. The premise of detective Castellanos enduring a perpetually warping nightmare is great, but the driving narrative forces are at best enigmatic and at worst embarrassing.

Horror fans shouldn’t let the disappointing story deter them one bit, however. Few Paranormal Activity fans care how these malevolent demons come back again and again – what truly matters is that the audience’s nerves are frayed until they’re raw. The Evil Within excels at keeping your palms sweaty while delivering a harrowingly rewarding gameplay trial. Watching the credits roll with a sigh of relief doesn’t feel like winning; it feels like surviving."

Not bad form big review sites

mikeslemonade3482d ago (Edited 3482d ago )

Still not good enough. I wanted this game to be Game of the Year among crtics. Shadows of the Generic will claim GOTY at this rate.

Now we have to wait how COD or Dragon Age does. I have low expectations for Lords of Fallen. Someone has to win and not Shadows of the Generic and Bayonetta 2!

Clown_Syndr0me3482d ago

"Shadows of the Generic" GTFO, the nemesis system is the most original thing in console gaming this year.

vishmarx3482d ago (Edited 3482d ago )

this game is the best survival horror game in years.

i do feel bad for those who will miss out on this fantastic game solely because of their scepticism/dependence with/on review sores

but mordor probably the most next gen game we have right now, its bloody amazing but i do feel it severely lacks content.the main story is over in a jiffy

It sounds to me that you can't enjoy games unless they're given near perfect reviews. Try the game out, for all you know it could be a 10/10 in your books.

DVAcme3482d ago (Edited 3482d ago )

So you're accusing Shadow of Mordor for being generic, yet you're looking forward to Call of Duty and Dragon Age and you shit on SOM and Bayonetta 2. Huh.

SPARTAN33482d ago (Edited 3482d ago )

Who the fuck cares about GOTY? Am super happy Evil Within is getting pretty good scores. I don't really like Shadow but its good everyone over at Monolith gets to keep their job. Also GOTY isn't what game got the best scores at the end of the year.

Alien isolation got 5.9 and I still bought it , and that game kicks ass don't let a review stop you from playing a game

I am looking forward to playing this game, but really, a 9? Why are all other review outlets giving this less of an average?

LightofDarkness3482d ago (Edited 3482d ago )

Well, the bigger sites are singing its praises while lesser known sites are calling the game out for its apparently myriad flaws. This is also a Zenimax (parent company of Bethesda, Id Software and Tango Gameworks) game with a lot of money behind it. I don't like to call out big sites for lying in bed with publishers too often, but its cases like these that make you wonder.

funny how everybody trashed the game after the first previews and now everybody seems to like it...

Great !! This game is on my radar for long time!! 9/10 is really nice!! Can't wait to play this game!!! Hallowen is on the way:)

Biohazard88603482d ago

Regardless of reviews.. I picked up my copy at midnight at my gamestop and it was so worth it best survival horror game in forever Shinji has still got it!

CorndogBurglar3482d ago

How are the graphics? Everything i've seen looks great, but you never truly know until the game releases, y'know?

Biohazard88603482d ago

I'm playing on PS3... So they are not that great but what do you expect from a cross gen title but it looks pretty good it will shine nice on PC tho!

DaGR8JIBRALTAR3482d ago

Gfx are good on ps4 but would have been better if the game was strictly current gen.

Bioshock 1 only has the intro though, would you kindly pick up that radio? :p

Original FEAR is a goddamn masterpiece

ModsDoBetter355d ago

Was playing Alien: Isolation again a few weeks ago, still holds up and the AI is incredible.

F.E.A.R. was another amazing game, shame the series went downhill with 2 and then fell off entirely with F3AR.

Couldn’t get into Fatal Frame, bought the remaster on PS5 and just…couldn’t.

DeathTouch355d ago

Fatal Frame 2 is an underrated masterpiece.

gold_drake355d ago

omg that game freaked me out haha

Abnor_Mal355d ago

One of my favorite games, would love to see a remake.

gold_drake355d ago

i still think Haunting Ground is one of the best.
