Oculus Confirms Consumer Rift Will Have Integrated Microphone and Headphones

VRFocus - Earlier today Oculus VR announced the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display’s (HMD) latest prototype, Crescent Bay. The new device contains a range of improvements over the device’s second development kit (DK2), including a higher resolution display and better design. One of the highlights of the kit is undoubtedly the integrated headphones, a feature that had long been requested by the VR community. According to the company, this will be improved on even further with the release of the consumer Oculus Rift, which will include a microphone as well.

I'm not giving up my Sennheiser HD600's and Schiit Asgard amplifier for some crappy built in headphones. I hope they can be detached.

TardcoreGamer3520d ago

Haa! Same sentiment here. I use my hd600's for the DK2 and I can confirm, they deliver way more immersion than those dinky built-in headphones ever will.

Same here,
HD650 anlion modmic on a essence stx

please make it detachable or i will have to break it apart

It would be better to release 2 models. One with headphones/mic and one cheaper without. Most of us have high quality headphones/mic and it wouldn't be right? to spend unnecessary money for something we already own

Clown_Syndr0me3520d ago

I expected this, didn't think it would be very practical otherwise.
Wearing two headsets would be weird.

It says integrated. Usually integrated means it can't be removed..at least not easily.

They're using advanced 3D sound.
For an example look up virtual barbershop

Ghoul3519d ago (Edited 3519d ago )

that is a binaural sample "the barbershop".

binaural audio is a method of recording sound with 2 mics and a virtual head for the occlusion. then you get a perfect stereo positioning. Far better then any 5.1 emulation or 5.1 headphone can deliver.

battlefield for example has binaural audio calculated directly in the frostbite engine, but its something you have to "produce" inside the engine.

they can integrate it in the devkit but its up to every dev themself if they make it work inside theyre engine
you cant buy some hardwre to get it.

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook7364d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt365d ago (Edited 365d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal365d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow365d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal365d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt364d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.

Although I never owned an oculus, I played the demo for this at an electronics store. Pretty impressive in an early goings of VR title.
