What's the right racing game for you this year?

IGN:

When Activision shuttered Bizarre Creations back in 2011 the publisher attributed the decision to the fact the “fundamentals of the racing genre” had changed significantly during the three years that had elapsed since the company had purchased the UK developer.

Unfortunately the racing genre had changed. Robust racers like Blur and Split/Second had failed to find large audiences and the closures of well-established developers like Bizarre and Black Rock Studio followed. Category leaders like the Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport series remained viable but the market for everything else just didn’t seem to be there anymore.

So which of these upcoming racing games will be right for you? IGN finds out

Mikelarry3509d ago

not really a racing game fanatic but I seriously LOVED burnout paradise, most of the racing games I have seen seem to be way too serious. can anyone recommend a racing game that mimics burnout paradise for the either ps4 or xbone one

Ballsack3509d ago

Forza horizon is more open like paradise

Driveclub is more social with better graphics

Your better going with horizon

Mikelarry3509d ago

thanks will have a look into horizon

Gazondaily3509d ago

Forza Horizon 2 for sure. Played the demo yesterday and had a smile all the way through. The visuals are astounding, the handling sublime, the feedback on the controller's triggers are brilliant, the music is so good (Nero-Satisfy!) the open world is brilliant...I want this game now!

IrishSt0ner3509d ago

I'd love to play DC and feel how the cars handle, graphics are superb either way.

Played Horizon 2 last night, when allowed to turn off the horrible racing lines and assists, the cars handled fantastically. With these settings off there's a lot more to the simulation aspect than I was expecting, and the developers PGR similarity comment makes absolute sense.

Got that giddy feeling I havn't felt in a while gaming, Playground Games are onto another winner!

@Mikelarry, ultimately is just personal preference but if its an all around great racing game packed with really compelling features you are looking for right out of the box then Forza Horizon 2 imho is hands down the best choice by far:

-Inherits the amazing handling dynamics/physics engine, tuning and customisation options from Forza5
-Add weather effects and a radical new lighting
-Seamless transition between solo component and online mode by allowing players to jump between each instantly with the push of a button
-Extensive social features, 1000 player clubs with shared progression
-Nearly 150 tracks and 7 radio stations curated by well known BBC Radio DJ Rob da Bank (you can check out the list of songs here: http://news.xbox.com/2014/0...
-Drivatars that learn your driving behavior and mimic other gamers driving skills
-Superb visuals
-200 cars to drive right out of the box
-Over 700 events
-Skill points for driving style similar to PGR "Kudos"
-Open World go where you want= Explore every corner of the world.

---Lots of good racers coming out but for me the above highlights packed into FH2 right out of the box make it the racer to beat and especially after enjoying the FH2 demo so much yesterday it just cemented my choice as the best racer for the rest of the year.

MrPink20133509d ago

Well for some people it will be DC and for others FH2 simply because they don't own both consoles. That's why some of the comments need to be taken with a grain of salt. I like most racers.

@Mikelarry Ide say Horizon 2. For me it was the best racing game I played last gen. The 2nd looks to build on this and after playing the demo yesterday I have to say its looking like this is going to be my game of the year and even the gen so far. PG really know how to make a game with cars fun.

DC looks a good game but I don't think it will give the same amount of hours Horizn 2 will and it really is a massive open world racer with lots to offer.

danowat3509d ago

Horizon 2 looks absolutely sublime in the demo, seriously gorgeous.

ABizzel13509d ago (Edited 3509d ago )

Didn't even know the demo was out, going to download it now. But on a side note MS is stingy with the demos on there it's like only 15 demos an 2/3 are Kinect / Lego / or sports games -_-

Only got Forza and Dead Rising

bleedsoe9mm3509d ago

seriously beautiful game and no invisibile walls

JasonBloodbourne3509d ago

Driveclub and project cars I think for me. Wasn't a fan of horizon 1, tried the demo and straight away thought na not for me at all. But each to their own I say.

MeliMel3509d ago

Was demo to good for you? Or do not like awesome racing games?

Orbilator3509d ago (Edited 3509d ago )

It was nothing special the f2 demo, for me anyways, project cars looks and handles better. And the dc social aspect looks more user friendly

JasonBloodbourne3509d ago

Na mate I just couldn't stand the music or the announcer. And I know what I like and it isn't forza horizon 2. Didn't really like the first one either man.

Tedakin3509d ago

Obviously if you only have one console or the other, the choice is clear. Forza Horizon 2's demo is incredible though.

Torque_CS_Lewith3509d ago

That's not entirely true, both sides have one exclusive plus The Crew and Project Cars.
The only place where it's a simple decision is if you are gaming on ps3 or Wii U since both are only getting Project Cars.

Tedakin3509d ago

True. I was only considering Forza and Drive Club.

aaron58293509d ago

im more into circuit racing and sims... so Project Cars for me.

Wait. I don't get it. I reported on something that I recently noticed. I did mention in my article that I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't gone to play The Division 2. That said, if this was nearly a week ago, I wouldn't know, as NO ONE REPORTED ON IT! Not IGN. Not Gamespot. Not Kotaku. No one.

You got people here complaining that there are any real gaming journalists and game journalism sucks, but when someone is acting, doing something to make something known to the public about what a company is doing. What do you do? You poke fun at it. What is it that people want? Do you want to complain for the sake of it? Or do you actually want people to do something to make those who aren't in the know aware of the shady stuff that's happening and to sound the alarm?

ravens5214d ago

It's the "oh well" setting in on digital users. They don't care they don't own their stuff for some odd reason. 🤷🏽.

FullmetalRoyale14d ago

Good for you! People sometimes just feel the need to show how little they actually have to say. Very respectful dressing down, btw, which is another thing we need more of.

fan_of_gaming14d ago

I appreciate your article,
- "If this isn’t considered both a “WTF” moment and setting a dangerous precedent, I don’t know what else it would be"
- "it could also signal other publishers that removing games from our accounts would be okay"
- "Maybe those firmly against this digital future have a point after all"
- "This. Is. Fucked. Up."

As someone against an only-digital/streaming future for entertainment content (movies/TV shows/games/books), it feels like talking into a void about the points above on this website, or on Twitter, or with my friends, etc. People don't get it. I'm strongly contemplating whether this will be my last generation of PlayStation & Xbox consoles (I'm confident enough that Nintendo's next system will still support physical media and that their 1st-party games won't have online-required installation or usage restrictions).

Welcome to the era where you no longer own your games.

gvrd001914d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I'm so done with Ubisoft, removing games one paid for is a new low...
Bye Ubisoft,
You've done f#c*ed it up !

Chocoburger13d ago

This was me 9 years ago, when I realized all they wanted to make were filler boring games that are packed with micro-trash-actions.

Snooze! Moving on from Ubi-junk!

vTuro2413d ago

I see they're trying their best to surpass Activision Blizzard for being the most hated gaming company. Keep at it, Ubisoft, I believe!

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut85105d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio105d ago (Edited 105d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack105d ago (Edited 105d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander1972105d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff2183104d ago (Edited 104d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim105d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno104d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff2183104d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 104d ago
Chocoburger105d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai104d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC104d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.
