Xenoblade Chronicles X helped Monolith Soft to lay HD development groundwork

Cast your gaze upon Xenoblade Chronicles X and you’d be forgiven for believing that it wasn’t Monolith Soft’s first foray into the realms of HD development. But, it is.

The Wii U exclusive has helped to “lay the groundwork for HD game development” according to executive producer Tetsuya Takahashi, the developer not allowing over ambition to dissuade the importance of building key skills.

Its 2014 Nintendo and you are just starting to "lay the groundwork for HD game development” .

Take your time, hurry up
The choice is yours,
Don't be late.
Take a rest as a friend,
As an old memory, ah
Memory, ah [3x]

Currently playing the original Xenogears on my PSP. One of the best RPGs ever made of all time. And its really very 90s storytelling which is very good. Feels like Escaflowne.

whats so creative and inventive about HD, that makes you feel that nintendo should have been on it years ago ?

Baka-akaB3518d ago (Edited 3518d ago )

Not that i necessarily agree with him , but some games will always be helped by better visual . Anything from the xeno gear/blade/saga universes always benefits from epic visual and outstanding art and sound direction .

I dunno why people have to insist at pretending more power should always bring gameplay enhancement and more features . It can suffice on its own as a way to create and feature art .

If anything , the WIi emulator "proves" (dont worry i always purchased my few wii games , i just used the opportunity of a stolen wii to delve into this) that any of the best wii games , would simply have been better looking in HD .

In reverse let's ask you guys , what has refusing the HD trend brought to the previous nintendo console in exchange ? Motion gaming ? Even if done mostly to react to nintendo's initiative , everyone did it , while still having HD

miyamoto3517d ago (Edited 3517d ago )

"whats so creative and inventive about HD, that makes you feel that nintendo should have been on it years ago ?"

What a dumb question!
Are you acting like a dumb and dumber?
Did you really read your reply?
Why ask a dumb question like that?

Do you really think in the slightest that resolution, ppi, number of pixels had something to do with creativity and innovation?

oh, and those 16 who agreed with you...
*doublefacepalm

This is why you Nintendo fans look so very very bad in the eye of the public.

Do yourselves a favor and think about the dumbness you guys post. you guys make Nintendo look so very bad.

Concertoine3518d ago

I bought Xenogears recently too.

I cant wait to see Monolith's true potential realized on a system they can really push great visuals.

wonderfulmonkeyman3518d ago

Wii U is that system, thankfully. They'll only get better at it with time, so we won't have to wait until Nintendo's next home console.

I do have one very interesting question, though...
Anyone think we'll be given the option of a first person mode while inside the mechs?
Because I think that would be awesome...

Concertoine3518d ago

If they're smart they'll include some kind of first person button. Like in Pikmin 3. The environments are gorgeous and we could see some great miiverse posts of the scenery.

A playable first person view is unlikely though.

Baka-akaB3518d ago

Yeah i'm glad to finally truly see it too . I've always been a huge fan of their works on all involved platforsms

Paprika3518d ago

Ironic really, xenogears... although epic, was in the shadow of final fantasy! Now, after all xiii's "HD" visuals... monolith are literally bringing us a game which will likely destroy the next final fantasy!

Seeing Nintendo games on the Wii U in HD has been awesome so far.

Seeing MK8 & Smash Brothers along with Xenoblade has me REALLY excited for like 5-6 years down the road and the next Nintendo console.

Godmars2903518d ago

If MS and Sony had held back the PS3 and 360 a year or two many console loyalist wouldn't have wound up praising them for holding back content and cutting back features just so that games looked better.

Baka-akaB3518d ago

Yeah there is a whole lot of that going around . Whatever the decision , bad or good , a fringe of gamer will always defend it somehow , or burst in rage at any critics

Concertoine3518d ago (Edited 3518d ago )

I remember back when not EVERY game had to have this huge budget with motion capture and cutting edge visuals and had to result to imitating what sells to keep the company alive. Hell i remember when not every game had to be full price. Maybe the large user base of the PS4 will spur more experimentation... hopefully. The industry is bloated beyond belief and everything is morphing into one. Stealth games, tactical shooters, horror, just a few of the genres that have devolved into imitation and action over the course of the 7th gen.

pcz3518d ago

xenoblade on wii was HD in all but resolution. it had the scope of a HD game, it had the detail, it had everything a 'next gen' game has... only not the high resolution.

and it didnt suffer either. i own a wii and ps3 and xenoblade impressed me far greater than almost everything i have on ps3.

the game is inspirational- here is my remix of the mechonis field music from xenoblade

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

please comment and share! :)

DeusEx-Machina3517d ago

I dare to say that Xenoblade has something that most alleged 'next gen' games don't have to this date.

If anyone knows how to take advantage of there own hardware it is Nintendo. It is really interesting they can already do so much with HD and yet they are so new to it. 6 years late to the HD race but I don't find it to much of an importance. Games are about gameplay.

Dunban673518d ago

I wonder if Xenoblade was ever really considered for 2014? To go from a 1 year release window (2014) to another 1 year release window (2015) just seems a bit too vague

I really think some of the delayed games on the Wii U were nothing more than smoke and mirrors to make it appear more games were coming sooner for the Wii u than they actually had

Going back to the 1st big game drought in early 2013 there was a sense pr belief (Nintnedo even said themselves) the games are coming in 6 -9 months- here we are nearly 2 years in and that same belief that the games are coming in 6 to 9 months (AKA 2015) . I wonder when/if they will ever actually be here- MK8 is great but that is the only Wii u retail games I have bought since last Christmas (other than the Lego Movie game)

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3518d ago

Monolith Soft was hiring for Online and Network component at the beginning of this year.

MSBAUSTX3518d ago (Edited 3518d ago )

Since March 2013:

Super Mario 3D World
DK Tropical Freeze
Pikmin 3
Rayman Legends
Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag
Mario Kart 8
Need for Speed Most Wanted Wii U
Sonic Lost World
Wonderful 101
Injustice Gods Among Us
Wii Sports Club
Pushmo World
The Lego Movie Videogame
Lego City Undercover
Mario and Sonic Olympics at Sochi
Call Of Duty Ghosts
New Super Mario Brothers U
Super Luigi Brothers U
Pac Man and the Ghostly Adventures
Batman Arkham Origins
Deus Ex Human Revolution Directors Cut (amazing BTW!)
Wii Party U
Game and Wario
Lego Marvel Super Heroes
Disney Infinity
Skylanders Swap Force
Scribblenauts Unmasked a DC Comics Adventure
Splinter Cell Blacklist
Sniper Elit V2
Resident Evil Revelations
Lego Batman 2
The Walking Dead Survival Instinct
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

That is 33 games in 18 months. This does not include tons of Indies like Trine, Shovel Knight and other amazing games like it. This does not include the seemingly countless virtual console games from NES, Super NES, and Game Boy Advanced you can download and play on or off TV.

So would you care to rethink your post that Nintendo is putting games off for another 6 to 9 months? Because I count almost 2 games being released each month in that list and it isnt even all of the games. Only the ones that were the biggest. Not only that but 12 or 13 of those were published by Nintendo. That is a crap ton more in house games than any other console make could dream of producing in a year and a half.

Dunban673517d ago

Since holidays 2013 there have been DKTF and MK8 plus the Lego movie game for retail

The eshop virtual console gMea have come out like about as slow as anyone could have imagined and there are no GameCube or Wii games

Many of the games you listed are post launch 3rd party that I liked and bought many of - unfortunately not many did buy them and now we are getting close to zero third party so it has been a dry run most of the time

BigDuo3518d ago (Edited 3518d ago )

Just for a comparison, according to Iwata Asks, Monolith Soft began very early development on Xenoblade Chronicles 1 back in July 2006 with the two clay models of Bionis and Mechonis created. Monolith Soft was already developing Disaster: Day of Crisis, so it was naturally further in development and had most of the team working on it too. By April 2007, Monolith Soft made the tech demo for the game and began to determine the project's overall direction and writing. The scale of the game and its content grew bigger than initially planned, but the development team. The game was first revealed publicly at E3 2009, and released a year later in Japan first.

From what we know of Xenoblade X, Monolith Soft first mentioned the game back in July 2011. At the time, the game already had a design document completed or it, Monolith already was researching HD development and was looking to hire more staff to work on the project. According to a recent statement from Xenoblade X's producer, the scale of project's maps is going to be considerably larger than Xenoblade 1's.

Monolith Soft co-developed Project X Zone with Banpresto for 3DS which released in Japan first on October 2012 and around 8 months later overseas.

MSBAUSTX3517d ago

If you have not played and or owned all of the games or at least half on that list, I wouldnt be complaining about not having more games released. That is the problem with most gamers. They complain about a lack of games but have not even tapped the existing library available for the systems right now. Like I said already about 13 of those 33 titles are Nintendo published games. So that IS a lot of games released in that 6 to 9 month period. This year alone there will be between 6 and 8 Nintendo published titles for the Wii U.

So if 6 to 8 games per year are really good first party games that means that Nintendo IS doing their part to bring the games to you. They dont own every production studio in the world! Ubisoft screwed themselves and Wii U owners. The final point is that there IS a long list of games to play from virtually every genre. If you havent played them all yet then why bitch about games that havent been releasd yet? You have plenty to keep you busy on that list until the titles you are waiting for cone out!

Dunban673515d ago

Question for you: I downloaded Wii U party when I purchased MK8 because I already owned the other games - Personally I don t like Wii U party but my kids love it and it is technically their console and the reason I own the Wii u -
I did not think much reading and playing the demo of Game and Wario (played it at the Nintendo store in NYC) either but now I'm thinking my kids my like it since they like Wii Party U.

Are you familiar w Game and Wario? Do you think my kids would enjoy it if they liked Wii party U? Thank you

Yea. I own it but don’t want to pull out the Wii U

Zeldafan64313d ago

I never unplugged my Wii U. Still play it almost daily but a definitive edition of X would be appreciated.

jznrpg313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

It’s one of the systems I have the least games for . Though there are some really good games on it. I have systems from Atari’s , Nintendo’s, Segas , TurboGrafx 16 , PS’s etc etc so I put a few in my game storage room. I do pull it out from time to time and I have a new one in a box but won’t open that .
But I’d really like to have a Chronicles X but not on Switch whatever the next console is preferably so they can add more quality to it .

Zeldafan64312d ago

Lucky, you didn't need to explain that.

Zeldafan64313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

Playing X at 1080/60 would be great so waiting for the Switch successor would be ideal but it wouldn't be smart to make it a launch game. It would suck waiting til 2025 to get X definitive edition but I think that's what will happen.

I know people say Wii U has no games but I've got over 100 games for it.

luckytrouble312d ago

I mean, when people say a system has "no games" they aren't saying the system literally had no games released on it. They're more commenting on the state of games that make the system worth owning. For many the Wii U never had a game that made the system worth owning, or if it did, it has a Switch port or successor at this point anyways so they were effectively proven correct to have never purchased a Wii U in the first place.

Yes, depending on the individual the Wii U remains worth owning for the handful of games still locked to it, but for many they'd rather just wait to see what else gets ported in the future at this point. There is exceptionally little you can only play on a Wii U these days though, especially with the eShop dead so anything that may have existed only on it is no longer of consequence to non-Wii U owners.

chaos999313d ago

They said it cost too much time to remap controls unfortunately

luckytrouble312d ago

In all fairness, that's probably a reason they're passing on a few of the still Wii U locked games. Starfox Zero, among the reasons you may not want to port it, would need its entire control scheme reworked from the ground up. Chronicles X may not be as extreme of a case (I don't know, I've never played or watched gameplay), but often unless a game is going to sell really well, it can be hard to convince a company to do more than the basic expected remaster work. Heck, a lot of people figure the only reason we got Galaxy 1 in the 3D All Stars collection for example is because they had already done the work for the Nvidia Shield port for China, which subsequently is likely the major reason they didn't include Galaxy 2. They simply did not want to remap the game controls. It may sound silly since it sounds so simple just by the words, but you have to figure more goes into it than you're probably thinking if it's that much of a sticking point.

DefaultComment313d ago

Yes, I agree. We definitely need to retake Xenoblade Chronicles X which btw it left us on a cliffhanger suggesting there wiull be a XCX2 .... and im up for it.

I wish The Last Story would make a comeback.I played it years before I got around to Xenoblade. Mainly because of the scalping going on because of Xeno's limited run. It took me a few tries to get into it but once I did I couldn't put it down. A Wii hidden gem for sure.

pietro1212749d ago

As much as I love Xenoblade, Last Story was the better game IMO. I wish Nintendo would remaster or simply port the game onto the Switch.

Xenoblade went on to be a really successful franchise too.

I wish the Last Story get a Switch remaster or remake. That game deserves a second chance

If they're not important enough to be held on their own official storefront then they're not important enough to give your money to Nintendo.

Buy these, physically, used or simply emulate them.

This article comes off as nothing more than advertising games that Nintendo, themselves, don't care to offer you... buy now!

ocelot07792d ago

Wait hang on where all the outrage? I swear when Sony tried to do this with PS3 last year. There was outrage from all corners of the gaming universe.

Why does no one care Nintendo is doing it?

MadLad792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

There has been.
A lot of it.

Simply type in "3DS" in Google and tell me what you see.

ocelot07791d ago

Oh I have a fair few websites reporting on it. But where is the outcry on here? I remember their was 2-3 approved top voted articles when Sony announced they where closing the PS3 store. All slating them and not caring about customers.

I should of worded it better. Where is all the outrage on n4g?

MadLad791d ago (Edited 791d ago )

N4G is a fanboy site, mainly frequented by only Sony.
Microsoft is their direct competition, so you'll typically only see articles that are made to rile up those fanbases.

Nintendo does it's own thing, so they're rarely brought up, aside from their fans. The most you get is the same typical two or three posters claiming Nintendo is only for infants.

If you come to N4G for educated discourse and reasonable discussion, this isn't the place. Sad as it is.

pietro1212792d ago

It's lame that it is shutting down. Now I feel rushed buying all the rpgs I missed out on the system.

You guys know that even archive.org has 3DS roms, and all other console roms. I'm downloading 846GB of 3DS roms and will add the best games to my soon to be soft modded New 3DS 😁. Might as well throw in DS and other emulators in there to. Guys this would be the best way to play and enjoy the 3DS. Just need to buy a bigger micro SD card and format it to FAT32, which you can if it's even 256GB or larger there are ways.
