Why Calling Dark Souls Just a Hard Series is so Wrong

Gastón, from Twinfinite, gives his opinion on how Dark Souls titles are a lot more than just difficult games and why this should be taken into account in any comparison made against other titles.

I prefer a Challenging series over something that is just full of cheap shots and BS kills.

A more realistic challenge based off of a higher level of detail to present a more fierce degree of difficulty is OK by me.

......besides I got a bin full of cheap controllers to break during Gamers RAGE!

Glgh3530d ago

Haha. I know what you mean. I guess some games just require backup controllers.

On the other issue, difficulty is a great thing if it's well balanced and coherent and it certainly enhances many gaming experiences. There's just no fun in one-shot kills and overpowered characters.

My logitech has withstood Dark Souls so far, but I think I broke a PS3 controller with Demon's Souls.

Souls games present a nice level of chellenge, many other easy, casual games just make them look hard. An effect of publishers/devs compromising "hardcore" aspects of games in order to make a larger return on investement by trying to "appeal" to a wider audience. We've seen this end up alienating everyone quite a few times.

I'm okay with one shot kills when they require skill, like scout headshots in Counter Strike for example.

NukaCola3530d ago

It's hard to a degree. I would call them unforgiving. You are left with no room for error.

Wni03530d ago

Trial and error, rinse repeat. Oh hey that's the entire game.

Ryuk_20073530d ago (Edited 3530d ago )

The game is hardcore. This series doesn't care about your feelings one bit. It's like the game laughs at you when you die then tells you to suck it up and try again.

Muadiib3530d ago

Actually it cares very much what you feel and the feeling it's going for is dread!

The saddest thing about Dark Souls is that a lot of people see this game as a pissing contest and not just a great game.

Dark Souls' difficulty aspect is greatly exaggerated and people forget it's a beautifully-crafted game first and foremost. Plenty of arcade games are more difficult than dark souls. Most people who have played DS have finished it. That alone means it's really not that hard. The game is designed in a way that you die frequently, but that doesn't mean it's hard

Glgh3530d ago

Yes, the difficulty is greatly exaggerated and I believe they thought it would be a good idea to make that the main focus on Dark Souls 2 marketing. It's a shame because both Dark Souls have lots of features that are neglected by the very idea of just being hard.

nucky643530d ago

people finish these games in todays gaming world with LOTS of help from the internet. if the net were available back when the arcade (or NES) was big....those games would have been easier and many more would have finished them.

IMO Dark Souls has amazing character development and class depth. It is the main reason why I like the Souls game. The difficulty just really shows you have to learn the RPG elements and game mechanics. IMO they are a prime example of good game design. That is why a difficulty mode in a Souls game is a joke. The games also have great lore, and unique enviroments that tell a story and immerse you into the world.

The Souls games are much more than a challenge they are truly well crafted unique experiences

Glgh3530d ago

I believe that is exactly the point of the opinion piece.
It's a greatly crafted gaming experience that should not be dissected and analized in separate parts because it's all linked together.
Dark Souls lore is plain awesome and even that isn't just given away easily. You have to earn everything and instead of being a painful process it's actually rewarding and invigorating.

The prevalence of parrying: Why is it so popular?

Parrying has been creeping into more games, with almost every high-profile title of the last few years featuring it in some way.  Why?

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

Dudeson34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.

Hidetaka Miyazaki claims Dark Souls 2 “carried” the series forward

The game isn't good though.

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

CrimsonWing6959d ago

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

Aussiesummer59d ago

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

MrBaskerville59d ago

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.
