Sony Gamescom Presentation Review: Underwhelming

"This year's E3 was interesting, because Microsoft actually brought their A game with them, while Sony appeared to largely flounder (and was saved by the footage of some great games thrown together near the end of the conference). A lot of people felt Sony was saving things up- maybe stuff wasn't ready at E3."

Very underwhelming. . Sh!t load of indie push. . barely any footage of Bloodborne. Vita doesn't even exist anymore. . I could go on. . I can't even be bothered.

@dmitrijs88 how do you benefit from sales? 10 mill sales didn't stop microsoft from securing Tomb raider.

@Lulz_Boat let's not exaggerate

@ Army_of_Darkness I'm actually just as interested in the PS4 as I am in Xbox One.

The Vita is a disaster.

The rest of you are not worth replying to.

Magicite3557d ago

No worries, 15+m sold before 2015 confirmed.

XisThatKid3557d ago

All in all underwhelming or not we're getting alot of great features and games 2014/15 Yea I didn't see some of the games I wanted to see but then again most of my games already had their shine and I need to wait for seldom updates and release dates is all.
Planetside 2
Guilty Gear Xrd will be at TGS
I'm never ganna get another PSAllstars soo....
Last Guardian TGS my guess
among others.

Gazondaily3557d ago

Yeah I don't make a profit from those consoles sold, I want to play the games.

To be honest, Sony didn't have to do much to beat MS at this year's Gamescom. Somehow however, they didnt do that. I was really underwhelmed, mainly because, I was hoping for that big announcement. MS at least had one announcement, the TR exclusivity (as ugly as that is).

Sony obviously have their other studios working on something so I wanted to see some of that. Alas, although they showed off more games, and newer ones, it just didn't have that wow factor that a lot of us kind of hope for in shows such as E3 and Gamescom.

Also, what's happening with VITA? Or even Morpheus?

gootimes3557d ago

They beat Microsoft, but neither had good shows. Sony just had better games.

DOMination-3557d ago

Sony announced a lot of new things. No huge titles but lots of interesting stuff indeed.

MS pretty much repeated what they showed at e3. Lots of big titles but no real surprises.

All in all, both look in pretty good shape. Sony still have big devs with unannounced games which should make 2015 exciting. and people forget MS have over 20 first party studios and we've only seen projects from a few.

Good times for all. Especially for people like me who own both consoles

Outside_ofthe_Box3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

It seems like if your opinion doesn't reflect those that are on reddit and youtube you are a shill/aren't a true fan...

I don't see how it was underwhelming. What was shown was at least satisfactory. Promising features were shown and a lot of new games where shown as well. Kinda proved that just because a game is indie doesn't mean the game is going to be some 2-D low budget looking crap game.

Just because you didn't see what you wanted or expected (your fault for falling for the hype. You should learn how these conference are by now) doesn't mean what was actually shown is "underwhelming."

DevilOgreFish3557d ago

dmitrijs88 -
"No worries, 15+m sold before 2015 confirmed."

That has nothing to do with sony's presentation at gamescom. I thought sony did show off new titles, the problem was that a majority of these teasers felt more like place holders filling up time slots; which conflict with the games you would want to see more of.

There's two key things that give major kudos during these big events, and that's

1. Major influential IPs.

2. Gameplay; from either the new IPs or other influential IPs that didn't get their chance to show.

It's not just sony. Both companies are having this same problem with their time slot management, and it's confliction between small companies and big name brands.

morganfell3557d ago

Underwhelming is the definition of a visit to gamingbolt.com

As Enemy stated here:

http://n4g.com/news/1565955...

"- Wild (Sony owned, PS4, open world new IP, developed by Rayman/Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel, biggest game of the show, literally)

- The Tomorrow Children (Sony owned, new IP, PS4)
- Rime (Sony owned, new IP, PS4)
- Alienation (Sony owned, new exclusive from Housemarque, PS4, ‘nuff said)
- Until Dawn (Sony owned, horror PS4 exclusive)
- Tearaway Unfolded (Sony owned, PS4)
- DayZ coming to PS4
- Hellblade (new IP, timed exclusive, PS4)
- The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (timed exclusive, PS4)
- Volume (new IP, timed exclusive, PS4)

Sony demolished the competition to a point where it's actually embarrassing."

Overwhelming would be the word to describe Sony's Presentation.

GribbleGrunger3556d ago (Edited 3556d ago )

@Morgan: I agree, this is so frigin' frustrating. I thought Sony just nabbed it at E3 but that was likely due to the fact I'm a PS4 owner; however, Sony soundly beat MS at this years Gamescom. It was the most refreshing and exciting conference for a long time. I've noticed when people say this, they're not listing ALL the new exclusives MS showed.

This labelling games Indies and so automatically dismissing them by default needs to stop. Indies are just as diverse as AAA titles and just as well made -- in some cases better.

Sony have said they want to return to the PS1 glory days and they're doing just that.

SilentNegotiator3556d ago (Edited 3556d ago )

Indies are quickly becoming a massive part of the industry with lots of veteran backing. These obviously aren't typical indie titles, either. Better a bunch of indies than just seeing the same stuff as E3 plus a timed exclusive and rollercoaster game.

Of course Ps4 has a lot of indies; it's actually selling so developers want in.

trenso13556d ago

Sony had a bunch of interesting games while it wasn't an amazing show they had a lot things that seemed fun and great to play. But of course because they aren't AAA they don't. I hate how people ac like they can't play a game unless it's AAA, and the excuse when people say "i didn't buy a ps4 for indies" but are so quick to be like "sony is for the gamers and i play games" but then go on to write of indie games as if they aren't games.

Lulz_Boat3557d ago

sh!t load of indie?? what??

90% of the indies games showed are more than amazing.

Eldyraen3557d ago

Just meant a lot of Indies filled the show... doesn't mean they were bad ones.

Personally I would had preferred more Retail but I have a feeling I will be buying most Indies shown from both Sony and MS (I want to see more on Wild especially and also a Ghost of a Tale).

Indies have been shaking things up a lot for last few years (especially on consoles--I would say they have stolen shows several times now) so they are going out of their way to find cheaper alternatives but still fantastic games. For fans of AAA it can be disappointing but those Indies are often more numerous and a bigger bang for your buck nowadays.

Potnoodle9993557d ago

Rime can't possibly end up being as good as it looks....Because I would literally buy a ps4 for that game alone at this rate :D It looked so good it's insane!

Army_of_Darkness3557d ago

It's very underwhelming if you ONLY have an Xbone and have no intentions on getting a PS4.
Until dawn, hellblade and Alienation are just a few games from the show I'm very excited about :-D

TKCMuzzer3557d ago

Alienation looked brilliantly chaotic.

3557d ago
BISHOP-BRASIL3556d ago

I don't get it either...

The moment I saw the older Kai looking girl kneeling between the pillars and the smokey crow I almost shout "Heavenly Sword 2 finally!!!", well, not exactly what it is, but Hellblade is definetelly good news in my book. Same with Until Down, great potential 2 years ago but there were concerns about Move and than it vanished, now they staged quite a comeback and it looks like a great horror game. And the Silent Hill stealth tease/troll? Brilliant!

Also quite good unexpected suprises! Rime (Ico anyone?) and Wild (love me some survival game, thank you!) were impressive. I also had no idea DayZ was coming for PS4 (that may had just been me though).

Was it overwhelmingly good? Did I heard every possible thing I wanted being mentioned in this conference? No. But it sure as hell wasn't underwhelming. And sure it's better than repeating E3 and moneyhatting Crystal Dynamics on a game which we all knew was in development for both next-gen consoles since last year.

Haxamin3557d ago

Please go on, tell me more about Until Dawn, WiLD, LBP3, The order, Alienation, Tearaway Unfolded, Tomorrows Children, Driveclub, Infamous First Light,Rime, Hellblade, and Hollowpoint.

Elda3557d ago

@Hax...agreed!..almost everything Sony showed looked very interesting.

Palitera3557d ago

I guess he wanted Planetside 2, Uncharted 4, Resistance 4, or, you know, anything with a number on its name.

I prefer creativity. New franchises are being born.

Genuine-User3557d ago

some people have truly lost the plot.
Almost every game shown at the Sony Press conference was great.

LAWSON723557d ago

You played them already?

GW2123557d ago

Lawson, give it a rest. You're the guy already saying Sunset Overdrive is a GOTY candidate.

Dee_913557d ago

It will always be underwhelming when you focus on the plethora of things they didn't show or "should have" shown, instead of focusing on the things they did show.. but eh. what do you expect from a bunch of entitled gamers? Nothing new under the sun..

BABY-JEDI3557d ago

That's what I call a pretty awesome list with some great exclusives
; )

listenkids3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

You listed the show, congratulations.

The Order looks great, Rime looks great, Bloodborne looks great for it's audience, great to have DayZ join PS, Driveclub looks great. Destiny is great. But we've seen all these to some extent. The rest are average at best with small exceptions, just because they are timed exclusive or otherwise doesn't make them good.

Media Mol took time to innovate they say, but waste it porting a Vita title because the system is dead.
Alienation could well just be a DLC reskin of Deadnation, may turn out ok, who knows.

PS Now is having a terrible time because of pricing, they needed to address it. PS update 2.0 isn't enough, the UI has been stale for 9 months and we've generally been ignored on our wishes to make it a better place, give me MKV support, backgrounds, folders, anything.

fr0sty3557d ago

All of the PS 2.0 leaked images and videos have shown folder organization. No console has MKV support, or ever has, though it would be nice. DLNA and basic MP4/AVCHD/etc. support would work fine for me.

PSNow's subscription service announcement would have been nice, Tearaway is a critically acclaimed game that deserves a PS4 version, which is by no means a port. It is its own standalone game played in different ways, some of which are not possible on Vita.

Not to mention the awesome game sharing feature. Wild also looks amazing... and I've never played a Housemarque game I didn't like. PT also looks cool.

-Foxtrot3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

I don't understand why people are hating on Sony's conference when Microsofts was no better, they showed less.

At one time it was about games regardless of what they were, Indies or AAA but no all of a sudden these things are based on surprises and AAA games only

SharnOfTheDEAD3557d ago

Microsoft's Gamescom was just a repeat of E3 with Tomb Raider as a shock exclusive that was it, nothing new! Sony announced a lot of games that weren't mentioned at E3 and Wild is probably game of the show! Also P.T is a huge surprise, a scary one too!

Jdoki3557d ago

@Artista

What games do you actually like?

Indie or not, a good game is a good game.

Plus Sony showed of a lot of other interesting / intriguing titles.

I own a Vita, I play it loads. It's obvious it's a dying console, but I've got my money's worth, and a lack of new AAA games (there's still a tonne of games I have yet to play on it), is in no way reason to class the show as underwhelming.

There wasn't one big megatonne announcement, but there were a lot of smaller ones.

Artista 3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

Yes, your'e right. A good game is a good game.

But, Quality over Quantity. The indie scene is like a flood gate right now, especially on PS4.

I like the Uncharted series, and Demon's souls to name a few, so you can already tell I'd like Uncharted 4 and Bloodborne.

Vita is completely neglected in favor of PS Tv and indie games. . How would that not piss a Vita gamer off?

They announced 10 mill sold. Whoopdie doo..

It wasn't all bad tho' it's just that, I took nothing away from the show.

wsoutlaw873557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

Artista, are you trying to question quality? You cant just make assuptions based of a game being independant. And most of the games people are calling "just indes" are sony owned IPs. Come on, They showed basicly a new heavenly sword, the wild, new house marquee game, new q-games games, dayz on the ps4, hollowpoint and more on the paradox deal, untill dawn, and new trailers for some great games. What else do you really want? "Big" over hyped games? What is quality for you and how are you distinguishing it from announce trailers. It seems as if a bunch of you judge these things on overhyped "omg" moments rather than stuff you will actually play, which makes no sense.

Palitera3557d ago (Edited 3557d ago )

Looks like someone believes hype and marketing too much.

Advice: you shouldn't be so naive if you have gaming for a hobby.

Spotie3557d ago

You should quit gaming, as you're an embarrassment to the community.

You disregard any game that looks halfway decent, interesting, or unique. And for what? Moneyhatting? GTFO. We could do with less "gamers" like you.

q8kik3557d ago

they had a box with a half naked chick in their presentation ...... they definitely won IMHO

wsoutlaw873557d ago

I really liked sonys show. I dont need a show to see trailers of games I already knew about. I really liked what they did show, who cares if there were some indies. Even the news on the firmware update was nice. Would people really prefer MS's show where they showed nothing new and the only big thing they did announce doesn't affect xbo gamers in any way.

Flamingweazel3557d ago

MS had a tonne of multiplats not 1 new IP and sonys was underwhelming???

Sony announce 3 new AAA ip;s MS NONE

WTF people complain no new IP;s, only shooters, sony announced creative games across multiple ganres and people complain??

MS was a disaster sony's was awesome, so much variety.

gman_moose3556d ago

MS didn't show one new game, yet they get a pass from criticism? What else is new?

Sony at least showed some NEW things, even if no AAA games. The Silent Hill reveal was genius though, yet no one gives them any credit for that. So what if it's not exclusive, it was still cool. Until Dawn, Wild, and some others all look very promising, and were actual new announcements, and let's not forget firmware 2.0.

Really solid showing from Sony, but all anyone is talking about is MS buying up unknown timed exclusive for a mediocre game lol. Is this where the industry is going? No one gave a crap about the next Tomb Raider until this news.

garos823556d ago

People who found the conference underwhelming have a very underwhelming gaming taste. i don't need to repeat the amount of variety and plethora of genres that will be coming soon to PS platforms. Many people above me have already done so.

Maybe you moaning fools should try find another hobby such as knitting.

As a side note i was quite impressed with Microsofts show also. There is no shortage of experiences to be enjoyed from all 3 major consoles out there. Even just owning one of the three you have plenty of choice of some great IP's to enjoy

I would give it a B. Not great, not mind-blowing, but it did have some new games, some of them looked cool, and there was no 10 minute Powers segment. So, yeah, a B, good, not bad, but certainly not great.
