It certainly does to me. I remember foaming at the mouth when Doom 2 was about to release. After Doom 3 I'm in wait and see mode.

They like Valve and Half Life are in a very unenviable position. When u r a company or an IP that became revolutionary and genre defining b/c of originality...it is extremely difficult...if not impossible to capture lightning in a bottle twice.

Companies like Irrational and Bioware hav been equally original and influential but have managed to keep making high quality games. Though Bioshock Infinite was great b/c of the story, most would agree that the shooting mechanics and lack of tonic explanation took its toll on the overall sheen when compared to the original. And how do you replace Rapture? Bioware suffered with Dragon Age 2, ME3'S ending and SWtOR. Hopefully it looks as though they r back on track with Inquisition.

Doom was a game changer when it released. How do you repeat that short of creating a different genre which wouldnt be Doom? How much innovation can be found in a genre that has oversaturated the industry? It isnt a military shooter so that is great. And a beta is a wonderful idea b/c the one thing it does hav going for it, is that ppl will want to love it.

Bungie and Ubisoft understand that the evolution of fps games almost requires dynamic gameplay. Ppl have tired of the annual release with the inevitable dlc packs. Creating a world for ppl to live in seems much more appealing. And if u can hook gamers, it will be much easier to keep them, than releasing map packs every few months, or annualizing an IP.

What will Doom do? I do not know. But I am very interested to see which direction they take. Will it simply be a quality single player experience like Wolfenstein...safe but definitely worth playing. Or do they go huge...offering us something fresh and exciting...maybe even something we couldnt possibly forsee?

I do not envy you iD. Or Valve. Imagine having to make Half Life 3.

When an organization sets out to make a game,

I hope they don't 'start' the conversation with, "how can we make this game live up to our previous legacy?"

Instead I hope it goes like this, "how can we make the game we want to make?"

I d agree though, iD does need to prove itself once again.

Definitely rare, but Epic Games and Blizzard have been holding it down.

Wolfenstein The New Order did it, so why can't Doom?

You beat me to it, was going to say the same thing!

Just follow Wolfenstein. Fix the minor issues that game had, then add in intense corridor shooting and scary monsters and I'll be thrilled.

Wolfenstein was seriously awesome and I hope Doom follows it like it did in the 90's.

The little teaser they already showed off was already awesome. They just made the classic monster in modern day graphics, THATS what we want. Keep the same FUN playing style, and scary feel it had. I hope it has lava pits and explosive barrels and everything.

None of this "realistic" non-sense. "REAL" doesn't make it FUN.

This is a different generation buddy. Not realistic doesn't make it fun either in this generation time has change. This generation is all about adapting and innovating the game play.

Judging from the last few years of FPS I thought the point was to totally change your game to fit the CoD mechanics to sell as many copies as possible.

I hope they stay true to their roots instead of making a game purely for the sake of money.

It's that attitude that has made games so bland the past few years.

There are many ways to innovate and adapt without being realistic. Wolfenstein did it, Doom can do it.
