What Does Super Smash Bros.' Winter Release Mean For Wii U?

Hardcore Gamer: Despite a strong string of releases in 2013, Wii U is still struggling. The last major release on the console was Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in February, and nothing but NES Remix 2 has a solid release date before or after Mario Kart 8 on May 31. The recent Nintendo Direct dedicated to Super Smash Bros. didn't do much to reassure anyone about the console's future either; Super Smash Bros Wii U was given a winter 2014 launch window, and with only the aforementioned releases confirmed until then, it appears Wii U owners could be in for some barren months.

It means nobody will buy a Wii U until Winter.

-Foxtrot3661d ago

Well there's always Mario Kart 8...I know thats the game which will make me get a Wii U

Although I might wait until after E3 just incase anything gets announced hardware wise like a new mode, bigger memory or a price cut. Doubtful but you never know.

iamnsuperman3661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

I would wait till E3. I expect a price cut (possibly a new model but a price cut is more likely). If Nintendo were smart, they could make the impact of Mario Kart even greater if the took some off the asking price (makes it look like a deal)

-Foxtrot3661d ago

@iamnsuperman

Yeah then I might just do then

I don't see how the Xbox One and PS4 can have 500GB worth of memory but the Wii U only has 32GB. I mean come on Nintendo.

I know you can use SD cards but it's not the point.

Chrischi19883661d ago

But Wii U can also handle external HDD. I know it is not the same, but at least something...

Metallox3661d ago

You can't use SD cards on Wii U, you must buy an external HDD.

stragomccloud3661d ago

And internal hdd just would have made the system cost more and they were already selling the system at a loss at launch. Also, when I bought my 120gb PS3, I very quickly changed out the HDD. As I did with my original Xbox 360.

Personally, I'm glad Nintendo built a system that didn't cost me more since I would have just replaced the hard disk drive to begin with. They gave me the ability to hook up any external I wanted and they didn't charge me extra for a drive I wouldn't have used to begin with. Wii U does not have a HDD, it has flash memory on board, which is by the way, extremely fast.

It means its going to be a great Christmas.

randomass1713661d ago

Wait... what about Mario Kart? That's supposed to be a pretty big hit for Wii U.

Chrischi19883661d ago

Haters do not like if somebody tries to talk logic or that there are franchises, which are even more successful, than an already super successful franchise. They want to make a point with this stuff and it doesnt matter if something like Mario Kart for example, actually destroys their dumb predictions. Just like if Mario Kart does not exist.

eaise3661d ago

Means other games will be out to tide everyone over. Mario kart, Bayo 2, Hyrule Warriors ( probably), etc. And I bet we will see a game at E3 that will release in the Fall

caseh3661d ago

How can people not think the Wii U is technically f*cked.

If I had a console where I could count every game to be released on it on one hand for the next year I would be selling it, pronto.

I get that Mario Kart is an ace game but seriously, wtf?

SpiralTear3661d ago

You mind explaining all the games that will be released for the system over the next year, including the ones that are currently unannounced and will probably be announced in the future? I'm pretty sure there's more than five. In fact, I'm certain.

I've heard nothing but good things about Mario Kart 8. If you don't like the series, that's your call, but a lot of other people do.

It's the tired argument of people saying "it has no games", which in any situation for any system translates to "it has games, but I don't like those games, and since my personal preference rules the industry, it has no games."

Ratty3661d ago

"If I had a console where I could count every game to be released on it on one hand for the next year I would be selling it, pronto."

I'd much rather have quality over quantity. I don't think it's "f*cked" but it IS struggling.

caseh3661d ago

@postmesmeric

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Have a look for yourself, it's in no way a definitive list but it is pretty much kept up to date. Everything is either TBA or Q3/4 2014.

Very few titles have an actual date, it really doesn't bode well for the Wii U. Hello Kitty Cruisers came out in March apparently, awesome...

Nerdmaster3661d ago

Well, I can count with one hand the Wii U games I'm waiting for (Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Bayonetta, X, Sonic Boom). But I don't need any hands to count the PS4 and Xbox One games I'm waiting for, since it's zero. So for now I'll keep my Wii U.

randomass1713661d ago

Struggling is not the same as f'ed over. Wii U can recover and sell better. Any system can return from a rut. Put some games people want and people will get it and people WANT Mario Kart and Smash Bros.

wonderfulmonkeyman3661d ago (Edited 3661d ago )

So your hand has over 120 fingers then?
Because that's just the indie games, broski.
Short-term, too.

Long-term, Nintendo still has multiple first-party franchises due for a Wii U entry on top of hidden projects[Miyamoto still hasn't revealed the new IP he's working on], and stuff from second parties and a select few third parties to work with.

So unless you're a mutant, you'd better start counting higher than the number of digits and toes you've got.

Realplaya3661d ago

Dude I think you are being a bit extreme.

Means that it will release in the winter.

All seriousness, its a good time to release one of Nintendo's biggest franchises. Mario Kart will be over the summer on Wii U, and 3DS will get its' version of Smash Bros. Both quality titles.

barb_wire3661d ago

Heck, even though it says Winter 2014, it might not come out until 2015.. just depends on what Nintendo does.

Think they'll have Smash Bros bundle?

randomass1713661d ago

They'd be dumb not to. I'd be very surprised if there was no bundle.

Eonjay3661d ago

For me? Or for wii U. lol

Well not to much for me but I know people who would love to play this game and who will probably buy the system to play it.

Sakurai explains why he feels Smash Bros. and online play aren't a good fit

Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Super Smash Bros., explains why he believes online play isn't a good fit for the series.

I feel bad for Smash fans. Those guys have been trying to maintain the scene active for 20+ years and get nothing but hate from Nintendo.

RoseSapphire340d ago

Sakurai explains how he and Nintendo still don't understand how the internet works.

FTFY

Snookies12340d ago

Exactly, online play would be wonderful on Smash if Nintendo gave a crap about their online services. To be fair though, Nintendo's online offerings would be great if it were 15-20 years ago lol.

jambola340d ago

I've always said that Nintendo is either innovative and ahead of the curve
or 20 years behind, no in between

CrimsonWing69340d ago

I’m sorry, but if a game is MP then there’s no f*cking argument that can justify no online MP. What he says about competition being different from just playing with friends shows me how out of touch these people are.

It’s not until a new generation that understands things steps in to clean-house that we’ll see some evolution here.

Vanfernal340d ago

His argument is nonsensical. "You'd be limited to just playing people from your region". As opposed to being limited to playing people FROM YOUR COUCH!

CrimsonWing69340d ago

What I don’t get is how do you not have competition and experience the same issue if you have a friend that’s way better than you?

GoodGuy09340d ago

It's a big fighting game so online multiplayer is a must. Competitive smash is the only thing I see fun in these games anymore asides from the big character reveals, singleplayer is laughable and you ain't gunna have people over for couch gaming much.

If Nintendo makes a new smash, it needs a huge evolution for singleplayer/couch play to be enjoyable for me any more. But we all know they'll just do a deluxe edition for their next console lol. They really need to up their servers as well.

NotoriousWhiz340d ago (Edited 340d ago )

I can't imagine Nintendo producing a better smash game than ultimate. Roll it forward with a deluxe edition maybe with an extra character or two and call it a day.

Some other developers can try pushing platform fighters to the next level, because I don't think Nintendo is up to the task.

DarthZoolu340d ago

They already created a better smash brothers game than ultimate when they created melee

masterfox340d ago

he sounds more like is trying to justify Nintendo ineptitude to create a proper network infrastructure in order to Smash Brothers work properly online.

Xenoblade Chronicles X needs a remake when Switch 2 comes out! The game was fantastic, and it looked great! Better than most Switch games.

It isn't going to happen though. Monolith soft said "it is way too big", and would be too costly. I would absolutely buy that again, especially a remake or even a remaster.

Xenoblade Chronicles X should have sold better.

Sgt_Slaughter502d ago

One of the games I'm grateful that I found in-stock at GameStop before they quickly cleared nearly all pre-PS4/One/Switch games from their stores.

Nyxus501d ago

Perhaps if the series sold a little more on Switch, it would be worth it to do a port. If only some of those Pokemon numbers went to Xenoblade...

Sirk7x501d ago (Edited 501d ago )

I don't see how it would be too costly for them, when even a 1:1 Switch port would sell far better than the Wii U version ever did. It'd sell a million copies easy. Also, it is kinda crazy how good that game still looks.

GotGame818499d ago

X looks better than the Switch Xenoblade games.

Profchaos501d ago (Edited 501d ago )

Thank you homebrew community for breathing life into the system Nintendo spent years trying to forget.

One of my favourite systems for homebrew along with the Xbox, vita and ps2

Sirk7x501d ago

Huge library of great games with a modded Wii U. Virtual console, including injections, emulation, Wii U, Wii and Gamecube games with Nintendont on vWii.

FinalFantasyFanatic501d ago

Please port Xenoblade Chronicles X, I'm shocked it hasn't happened yet since everything else pretty much got ported to the Switch.

Ranking the Super Smash Bros. Games From Worst To Best

There are few franchises that seem to have been played by almost everyone in the world at least once. Standing with titans like Pac-Man, Mario Kart, and Call of Duty, Super Smash Bros. is a household name.

Yi-Long971d ago

Kinda interested in the game (Switch), but its consistently high price combined with 2 equally expensive Season Passes means I’ll probably never get to own/play it.

Inverno971d ago

Most likely they'll release a deluxe edition for the Switch 2 cause they've shown no interest in re-releasing any of their games with dlc in "complete edition"s. But having to buy another Nintendo console wouldn't really be a good solution either.

Yi-Long971d ago

They might, but I assume just re-releasing this game on next gen will get the existing fans angry, who would prefer a completely new Smash game (like they’re upset about there not being a new Mario Kart this gen).

Seeing how very few Switch games I actually bought, because of those high prices by Nintendo, I also doubt I’d invest in a new console from Nintendo.

FinalFantasyFanatic971d ago

@Yi-Long,

I would kill for a new Mario Kart, 8 isn't bad by any stretch, but it doesn't make the best of the Switch's capabilities, although I pretty excited for that new Mario Party. I do own quite a few Switch games, but I'd own more if the games weren't so expensive, it they're not Nintendo exclusive I end up buying elsewhere.
