With Destiny, PSN Can Become the New Xbox Live: That Is, as Long as Sony Doesn’t Screw Up

CraveOnline: "Most gamers have, in recent years, discovered the joys of PlayStation Plus. And if you like downloadable games at cheap prices, the service’s joys are numerous. Sony’s pitch is simple: for a mere $10 monthly, you can gain access certain games for free, other games for cheap, and nearly everything on PSN at some kind of discount or another, even if it’s a small one. As a PS3 owner I absolutely adore the service, with one of my most notable steals being Arkham Asylum and Arkham City for less than $10 combined. Of course, with membership costs it wasn’t actually $10, but it felt like it was. Ultimately, that’s what matters."

Sony has been absolutely adored by gamers since E3 2013, but they still need to step it up on a few things. This is one of them. Another is Vita memory cards.

XiSasukeUchiha3570d ago

Sony has proven themselves well!

AGaryColemanClone3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

Yes.

Except for the three years or so that the Wii fad was in full force Sony has been the top selling console maker in the world going all the way back to 1994 when they first entered the console market.

It isn't surprising that Microsoft ended up in last place with the Xbox 360 despite rushing their console out the door a year/year and a half early to pad out their installed base numbers and their installed base numbers inflated by tens of millions to the RRoD fiasco and all the other absurd hardware failures that led Xbox fans to go out and buy every new Xbox model hoping to finally have a console that functioned properly.

Microsoft's online service was just as much of a joke on the Xbox 360 as its hardware design and graphical power.

* Halo 8vs8 laggy P2P based online games
* Gears of War 4vs4 laggy P2P based online games

Xbox fans were forced by Microsoft to pay 50 dollars a year to host games on their own home internet connections.

While Sony was providing free online play for all PS3 owners.

* Resistance 16vs16 lagfree dedicated servers
* Warhawk 20vs20 lagfree dedicated servers

It is amazing that it has taken Microsoft this long to bring the Xbox online service up to Sony's standards that were set with the PS3 and provide dedicated servers for major games.

So, golf clap Microsoft...you finally have matched Sony's PC style dedicated server setup years later. Just like Blu-Ray on the Xbox One is delivering what Sony gamers have had for years.

Iceman X3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

You forgot MAG 128v128 dedicated lag free!!!
And Resistance was 30v30, Resistance 2 was 20v20, and Warhawk was 16v16.

JonnyBigBoss3570d ago

PSN is great, but could use some improvement to make it feel "premium".

bigbic3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

They have been good about listening to the service requests users make. I think they will continue to improve and progress. They have done well so far with it this gen.

ramiuk13570d ago

defo need s improving still.
just isnt as fast as should be and store, some games are clunky online.

im on 152mb fiubre and i can get about 40mb on psn,pc i max it and xbox live i max it too

NextLevel3570d ago

"With Destiny, PSN Can Become the New Xbox Live: That Is, as Long as Sony Doesn’t Screw Up"

That makes ZERO sense.

Legacy2123570d ago

I cant believe I agreed with my arch enemy on something. But how is a multiplat going to make ps plus like Xbox live. I just dont get. Its like the world forgot this game isnt exclusive

joab7773570d ago

Wanna know why? B/c ppl are acting like it is in a complete uproar over exclusive content. Really? Be happy that the game is coming to xbox. Halo didnt come to ps. Neither is sunset overdrive.

And the entire purpose for today and the next 2 weeks is so that there is a seamless successful launch. Soon we will b bashing companies and Sony for failed alpha launches.

Menkyo3570d ago

Because there will be twice as many PS4 players as xbone considering there are twice as many PS4 maybe thats the logic.

PurpHerbison3570d ago

You know exactly what it meant though.

user74029313570d ago

I dont want psn to become the new xbox live.

1. I don't like paywalls

2. I don't like getting old games for being a gold member (civilization anyone?)

3. I prefer ps+ because its a better value.

Legacy2123570d ago

No pay walls on xbox live
We just got guacamelee STCE for free?
Try hardee next time

Kingthrash3603570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

TRD4l1fe
Gwg games are free forever only on 360...the gwg is just like PS+ only with more ads
Angelic
Paywalls still apply for xbl...like f2p games are behind a paywalls...ironically. I call them p2pf2p games.

Dewitt3570d ago

Wrong. Wrong. And wrong. Congrats you are wrong on all 3 accounts.

Iceman X3570d ago

Here's a real list of Ps+ games and make sure you check out the list for Games with Gold too.

Gr1mmyshadows3570d ago

At least you keep those free games on gold forever

Master-H3570d ago

*kept , they 180'd on that policy actually

AngelicIceDiamond3570d ago

1. there are no more paywalls

2. GWG is getting better

3. That's great, you enjoy your preference I can respect that.

xHeavYx3570d ago

1) You still need to pay for LIVE to play Free To Play online games
2) GWG is not really getting any better in my opinion
3) I respect that you respect his preference

truefan13570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

You don't just become something that was built over time. Look at amazon.com bestsellers http://www.amazon.com/gp/be... Do you want to know why there is always multiple psn cards up the top? it's because of the 2011 hack, as much as you want to brush it under the rug, people don't trust psn.

You earn reliability over the long term, and XBL has been going strong over 10 years. When you think of online gaming you think of xbox and xbox live, not psn. MLG tournaments are on xbox. Also psn has to start offering dedicated servers on a regular basis to be xbl.

novacav3570d ago

Totally agree. Though, some might say PSN is at that tipping point of being trusted, if they hadn't botched Destiny today. 2011 was a while ago.

xHeavYx3570d ago

Yeah, I wish PSN was reliable like Xbox Live, I mean, Live never goes down.... Right???
http://n4g.com/news/1550929...
By the way, Truefan, saying that the PSN cards are on top because of that hack years ago is silly even for you, the Xbox Live cards aren't far behind, and obviously, since the PS4 is the more popular system right now, PSN cards are on top

NextLevel3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

"Do you want to know why there is alwyas multiple psn cards up the top? it's because of the 2011 hack, as much as you want to brush it under the rug, people don't trust psn."

You don't actually believe that, do you?

It's because the PS4 is heavily outselling the Xbox One. Get a clue. That's why the system, games and controller are ranked higher aswell.

bigbic3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

True that, it has to do with very good sales on the PlayStation front. http://www.amazon.com/best-...

7 PS products in top ten on Amazon US, that is pretty huge actually.

mrpsychoticstalker3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

Anyway you look at it, the Psn will never match the Xbox Live, Xbox Live has been the number 1 multiplayer experience for more than 10 years. It is just recently that Playstation has discovered the importance of multiplayer. Even though some of their major triple AAA games don't even support multiplayer, this is because they know that their servers are weak.
As you can see from all those issues with the Destiny Beta.

I'm glad Sony has improved the Psn but it's still far from catching Xbox Live.

its_JEFF3569d ago (Edited 3569d ago )

Oh... Playstation just "recently" discovered the importance of online multiplayer... GTFO that is such a rediculous statement... I don't even know if that was serious. Like you can't honestly believe that, can you?

Kayant3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

"Do you want to know why there is alwyas multiple psn cards up the top? it's because of the 2011 hack, as much as you want to brush it under the rug, people don't trust psn. " - And explain the XBL $20, $5, $10, $15 also always being in the top sellers. You're making no sense there.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/be...

Nothing for PSN. Look at that 1600 MS points charting.

Same thing 2011
http://www.amazon.com/gp/be...

2012
http://www.amazon.com/gp/be...

MS 1600 points - 7

$20 PSN - 43

2013 - PS4/XB1 release

http://www.amazon.com/gp/be...

$20 PSN - 1
$50 PSN - 5

Has nothing to do with the hack but generational shift.

" Also psn has to start offering dedicated servers on a regular basis to be xbl." - You do know last gen Sony used dedicated servers more than MS for their games right... Only 2 games use Azure atm - Forza 5 and TF hardly a wide use given the amount of games on the system. DC will be using dedicated servers.

its_JEFF3569d ago

@Kayant I honestly don't think they even know what a "dedicated server" is. Just cause they're not out saying it out loud doesn't mean it's not happening. You would think with smart phones being so prevalent these days people would be more informed?

MysticStrummer3570d ago

voodoochild3463570d ago

Lol. So much idiocy and misinformation in one post. The only reason I've had a credit card number on Xbox live was because they required me to have one. I put a prepaid card number up and used points cards specifically because Microsoft is a not a trustworthy company.

If you need proof just look at how a couple years back they change the settings for auto renew so you had call Microsoft to have it turned off. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to have to deal with the attendant hard selling me to re-up for another year for 45 mins then offering me deal only when he thought I was willing to let my account lapse.

Also ps3 had more than twice the amount of games with dedicated servers than the 360 despite being free. There are numerous xbone owners who complained about network performance and host migration because they were promised dedicated servers. People actually believed Microsoft's 300,000 servers statement not realizing Azure is used for multiple services. Gaming is only seeing a fraction of those.

Never believe anything Microsoft says without proof. They will lie to you in a second if it means getting at your wallet...

Bathyj3570d ago

"You earn reliability over the long term"

Well how come Sonys made the best console every generation for 20 years and you still dont trust them?

How come MS has a history of supporting their consoles hard for 4 years to sucker in new players, only to drop support leaving you high and dry, yet you still trail behind them unquestionably like a duck trailing behind its mother?

I'm just trying to understand why your logic seems very sound, yet useless to you because you dont apply it to yourself.

CaptainObvious8783570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

"How come MS has a history of supporting their consoles hard for 4 years to sucker in new players, only to drop support leaving you high and dry, yet you still trail behind them unquestionably like a duck trailing behind its mother?"

That's exactly what I've been pondering for so long.

I can understand pretty much every other type of fanboy, be it Sony, Nintendo, Sports, cars, but I don't understand MS fanboys after the way MS treat them.

Bathyj3570d ago

My biggest issue with MS.

I dont care about the power difference.
I dont care about the price.
Forced to buy Kinect bothered me, but it wouldnt have been a deal breaker.
Buying games instead of making them annoys me, but still, as long as they have them.

My reluctance with them has always been, I see a console as an investment. The price of the console is nothing, its the games library youre going to spend 1000's of dollars on over many many years is the true cost.

I do not want to be in bed with them again, putting my eggs in their basket, only to realize theyve dumped me, and its my own dumb fault because you would think after doing it twice before I would have learned.

jts18913570d ago

A history? The original Xbox had games throughout it's entire life span. While exclusives became rarer in the second half of the 360's life cycle, they didn't 'drop support'.

People like you seem to forget the PS3 and how Sony used gamers as a Trojan Horse for the format wars, and then told everyone to 'get a second job' if they couldn't afford it.

killer4fun533570d ago

Did you heard ps4 is the top seller of june?

TheSaint3570d ago

PSN seems great to me. So it buckled a slight bit as millions of people (on two different consoles!!) hit it at the same time to pull the Destiny Beta into their homes. I feel like it has been more stable in the last year than it ever was during the PS3's life.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter333d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood333d ago (Edited 333d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell332d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig332d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast332d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g332d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka332d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it
