Doom's new 4K patch analysed on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro

From Eurogamer: "Last week, Bethesda and id software released a brand new '4K resolution' patch for the brilliant Doom 2016 reboot, promising improved image quality for PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. Resolutions are certainly increased, but there has been some talk that performance has suffered as a result. Our tests suggest that this is indeed the case, but work carried out on the id Tech 6-powered Wolfenstein: The New Colossus may suggest a possible solution."

Wow, there is something seriously wrong with the Pro version. On average it's only pushing 50 percent more pixels than the base PS4 despite a 130 percent GPU power increase (with inconsistent framerate as well!) Maybe the bottleneck is memory bandwidth? Because wow, the X version crushes it. I'm hoping they can improve the Pro version a bit but I doubt it. Wolfenstein 2 was a similar story to this but not quite as drastic.

Kumakai2212d ago

the more I use my X, the more bummed i am that the Pro was kind of a halfassed upgrade by comparison. Don't get me wrong, I love my Pro but man... my X just makes stuff look better.

Guyfamily9992212d ago

It really does depend on the game. A lot of games only have subtle differences (such as 1800p vs 2160p, or native vs checkerboard, sometimes with sharper shadows/texture filtering on top). But then there are other games where for some reason the Pro does almost nothing, like Doom and fortnite. It really depends on the game and the devs I feel. Overwatch, for example, didn't even bother to uncap the dynamic resolution (tech the game uses on all consoles) above 1080p on PS4 Pro. All the system got was a 4K HUD.

@Guyfamily999

There’s a lot of 1440p and sub-1440p games on ps4 pro that push either 1800p or fully native 4K on the Xbox One X like Fe, both Vermintide games, The Evil Within 2, and the list goes on and on. The difference in resolution between ps4 pro and Xbox one x versions of games on average is roughly about twice that of the pro version.

Another big advantage the X tends to get over Pro in these games is higher quality textures combined with the higher resolution whereas the pro rarely gets better textures. Its usually the same texture quality as the base systems as in Shadow of War where as the One X has the improved resolution and the higher quality texture preset making the difference night and day.

TheCommentator2212d ago

You're probably right about memory bandwidth, but the dual GPU setup is slightly less efficient than a single GPU would have been too. I don't know though, something does seem off when you put the numbers together like that.

The question I have is: Why do they call the Pro's patch a 4K patch? It's dynamic 1440p. Even the 1X version is dynamic 4K which is stretching the truth a little.

Guyfamily9992212d ago

I think because there isn't an easy slang term for 1440p. QHD with horizontal axis resolution scaling doesn't have a nice ring to it and the term "2K" isn't accurate.
But anyway yeah, there's some sort of issue with how the game works that makes this pro update pretty terrible, it should be able to hold a locked 1440p (or at least stay there fairly consistently), the base PS4 was essentially a locked 1080p.

TheOttomatic912212d ago

Hope Id follow Machinegames example and make an aggressive dynamic resolution option.

Hardiman2212d ago

It runs smooth and looks great! I'm loving it!

maybelovehate2212d ago

Sony really needs to drop the "Pro" from the name.

chrisoadamson2211d ago

Sony 1440p .. much better name for it

Samus is on the list. Personally I'd swap the Space Marines with either Grey Fox from MGS or the COG armor from Gears of War.

NecrumOddBoy348d ago

You’re right. Hiding at the bottom so I missed it

REDGUM348d ago

There's no Dead Space listed in here, WTF!

Sciurus_vulgaris348d ago (Edited 348d ago )

I’d take the Space Marine power armour off the list due to it not originating in a video game.

Lmao what’s Halo Infinite doing on this list?

Who would ever say Halo Infinite saved the Halo franchise

SullysCigar355d ago

Thought the same - very bizarre!

RE7 though... my God, what a shift over RE6! That franchise was definitely going in the wrong direction, so RE7 was a welcome return to form.

ModsDoBetter355d ago

Resi 6 was and still is the worst entry in the series.
7 was a great turnaround, despite people’s concerned about the switch to FP perspective.

DMC5 definitely helped the franchise after the whole DmC debacle. Whilst it was a decent action game, it was a far cry from the series and the characters we knew.

AC Origins is my favourite in the entire AC series. Despite the switch to a more RPG style of gameplay - the setting, soundtrack, length, etc were all amazing. sadly followed up by the ridiculously long and “more of the same” Odsyssey.

I don’t feel it’s fair to say the franchise slipped with Doom 3, Doom 3 was incredibly atmospheric and took the game in a different direction but there’s no denying Doom (2016) was sensational.

Halo 4 & 5 were disappointing but Halo Infinite definitely didn’t save the franchise? What?

TheEnigma313355d ago (Edited 355d ago )

I'm going to have to go with SMB 3. I was around when SMB 2 first came out and people hated it. 3 is still arguably the best mario game created.

HellspawnPR1981355d ago

"Halo Infinite"? Worse Halo ever. Whoever made this list just lost all credibility.

Hofstaderman355d ago

In future lists of a similar nature I have a suspicion Final Fantasy XVI will feature.

I don't understand the hate Doom 3 got, but the original has to be tops for me too.
