9 Celebrity Voice Actors Who Ruined Their Video Games

Voice acting in games has come a hell of a long way in the last 30 years, and as the industry itself has grown, matured and flexed its financial muscles, gamers have seen everything from actors finding fame in their respective games – the Uncharted series’ Nolan North for example – alongside already notable celebrities lending their talents to any number of titles.

Is it a good thing though?

Blaming the entirety of Destiny's failings on Peter Dinklage's stilted voice acting is a little harsh. As phoned in as it was, I'm not sure he can be held responsible for Activision hacking the game to pieces.

HaveSumNuts3526d ago (Edited 3526d ago )

I think Dinklage would be much better in Destiny as a real character not just some robot ghost thingy. As a melee weapon he would be fantastic.

kneon3526d ago

Any real character would be a big improvement. Currently there are no characters for anyone to care about.

Conzul3526d ago (Edited 3526d ago )

I felt sorry for the little dude every time I heard my ghost speak. He had to be dying of boredom with lines such as those. Hope this doesn't sour him on game gigs. He could be awesome in a proper story-driven game.

Just realized Destiny is rated T after all this time. WTF? That's the problem right there...

rogimusprime3526d ago (Edited 3526d ago )

A little harsh? He was pretty much your only link to the story of that game save for a few sentences from the speaker. It's irrational to even suggest he be blamed for anything. Would it matter who was the voice of the Ghost? Maybe Morgan Freeman should've done it?

Sounds like this article is just begging to be clicked on.

infamous-butcher3526d ago

'He was pretty much your only link to the story'
Then its the fault of whoever thought that was a good idea and everyone else who agreed.

When you really look at some of the best Sci-Fi games and films, the dialogue often defaults to streams of jargon and actually quite limp on paper.

It's all in the DELIVERY. Shatner can make a flat/nonsensical line sound amazing. So can Patrick Stewart. Brian Blessed. Harrison Ford. Rutger Hauer.

The delivery. You have to own the lines and give them personality. Dinklage couldn't be bothered.

EDIT: Aaaand, guess who misread Catoblepas' comment? This idiot! Sorry. Activision deserve the flack here, though I stand by my points about Dinklage sleepwalking through the whole thing.

Lord_Sloth3526d ago (Edited 3526d ago )

Could be the director actually. Not all fault in an actor's performance lies with the actor.

A director is supposed to poke and prod the actor for hours to get varying deliveries from them and then decide which is the best of the clips.

This is the problem with directors who are easily intimidated by actors with a big and popular name as they're afraid to offend. I've heard Hale complain about receiving direction before.

Before we go screaming that Tyrion can't use his voice properly when acting (which we all know isn't true) let's consider poor directing to be the problem and some of them don't have to spine to put them in their place.

Baka-akaB3526d ago (Edited 3526d ago )

even with the perfect delivery you're left with a story with almost no named character , and only a few (basically the queen of the reef , her brother and the "stranger") worth remembering .

So nah i'd say it's hardly his fault . I love the game , but the meat of the story is in grimoire cards , and dlcs . There is something great lying there underneath , but it wasnt used at all

morganfell3526d ago (Edited 3526d ago )

No Blues, blaming Dinklage is an error in this instance. You are leaving out the person really responsible - the V/O Director. That is the person who should shoulder the blame.

Dinklage, if you have seen his movies such as The Station Agent, is capable of great range like the actors you named. What he delivers is based upon the direction provided him.

Baccra173525d ago

I liked Dinklage in Destiny. Was he really that bad or, was he the victim of his own character Tyrion Lannister?

Had Dinklage performed as Tyrion Lannister being a ghost would people hate it then? I doubt it. He, Dinklage shouldn't be blamed for not playing as Tyrion playing a ghost.

Audiggity3525d ago

Ummm... sorry to point out the obvious here, but, "Dinklage sleepwalking" could simply be a function of the character he was voicing.

Keep in mind, it was a small AI driven flying robot... not something I would envision bursting with one liners and excited tones.

The annoying robot from Borderlands ruined it for all other robots it seems.

Blues Cowboy3524d ago

@Lord_Sloth and morganfell:

...

...okay. You've convinced me! :D The main fault lies with the direction, I guess.

He's a great actor but was given a poor role. Irregardless the actor, or their performance, when you consider what we were led to believe destiny would be, and what destiny actually is, lipstick on a pig comes to mind.

HammadTheBeast3526d ago

Blame the V/O director, not Dinklage. You want Dinklage to sounds like a monotonous robot, he'll pull it off.

It'll just be insanely boring. Borderlands and Portal managed to give the robot personality, Destiny should've too.

theDivision3526d ago

I just don't think they let him be himself. I did not feel an ounce of emotion in his words and I think they told him to remove it. I believe this poor performance came from the people guiding him not the actor. Plus the writing wasn't very good. Besides the one line where the protagonist says "Come on... little light." and then Dinklage replies "Don't do that." I had no reaction from any of the dialogue between him. They should have given Dinklage free range to bounce dialogue back and forth. It all felt forced.

vallencer3525d ago

Peter dinklage is a fantastic actor. There's no doubt about that. But just because you're a fantastic actor doesn't mean you're a great voice actor. It's much harder work to voice act then it is to act. Not being able to show expressions on a face is tougher then anything. We read emotions through facial features. I like destiny a lot but his voice acting is awful. Granted he's a robot but I'd still expect more then what he gave.

What? Matthew Perry did a great job on Fallout: New Vegas and the game itself was awesome, I enjoyed it much more than Fallout 3. And while Peter Dinklage could have done a much better job voicing Ghost in Destiny, the game itself is great despite some genuine problems.

Summons753526d ago

So you're just picking bad video games that were bad more because of the gameplay and blaming it on one voice actor from each game? Next up "Wannabe journalists who continue to ruin journalistic integrity and showing they are absolute moron because they wrote stupid articles". Also this was clearly made to yet again hate on Destiny when it's getting Mixed to Positive reviews and is....FUN. This hate train needs to stop.

Chapter113526d ago

I know "integrity" is a big fancy word with #GamerGate, but writing an article about bad voice acting is far from "ruining journalistic integrity".

Summons753526d ago

"#gamergate" is a joke of an issue only cared about these ammeter blogger. Please do some research what journalistic integrity is kid, you may learn what a real journalist goes through.

Crazay3526d ago

hey now - don't make fun of Ripper. That game was AWESOME!

WeAreLegion3526d ago

Dinklage rules in everything. If you haven't seen The Knights of Bad@$$dom, I highly recommend it.

Too dated in my book. The AI is way too unpredictable to be acceptable today. It's definitely a game of its time.

Jingsing4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Agreed with those sentiments. The quality of the CPU controlled characters make or break a stealth game and they are pretty poor in all the Splinter Cell games by today's standard. This is what led me to playing Spies vs Mercs all the time in later games just to get a better stealth experience from a real person. Arguably Sony are making better stealth games albeit not Tom Clancy stuff.

TheProfessional4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

You should stick with fortnite or one of the countless bloodborne style games then. What a joke.

rlow14d ago

I had a good time with the game. It is a product of its time. But when it came out it was a must have game for a lot of people. I wish Ubisoft would make another game in the series or at least a reboot.

vgvill4d ago

They are making a remake, I think. I loved the original game when it was released, but I tried to play it again in recent years and just couldn't get on with it. The same with the older Hitman games.

PrecursorOrb4d ago

Yeah chaos theory still holds up though I gotta say. If you’re a fan of the series I highly suggest you go back to that one. Ubi has said they are remaking sc for “modern audiences”. I don’t have a lot of faith for the future of that company

Chocoburger4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Due to the lack of modern stealth games, and me constantly playing the MGS series, I've been looking for alternative stealth games to play, and went back and re-played the SC series recently. I wouldn't call SC1 or SC:PT masterpieces, there are AI issues, they're very much trial-and-error games, and that can lead to a lot of frustration. I also found the stories in this series to be boring, uninteresting, and just sloppily told. Cinematics are also of poor quality for both in-game scenes and CG cut-scenes, the soundtrack didn't leave any impression on me either.

Chaos Theory is better, but there was still a lot of room for improvement, and Double Agent (old gen ver.) was a sloppy mess that ended up a regression from CT. But still, at least they tried back then, these days Ubi-junk doesn't even try to make good games!

Nothing. It's up to the gamers to stop consuming content from companies that they don't agree with.

Garethvk9d ago

How do you know if you agree with it or not unless you play it? Which without conventions forces gamers to rely on trailers. Perhaps Demos should be made more frequently. But companies need to do better as well.

anast9d ago

Wait until release. Watch Gameplay. Exercise patience.

Garethvk9d ago

But is that not what they have now? Tons of gameplay or are you talking about watching actual gamers play it versus the trailers and streams? The big issue is that some companies pay streamers and influencers and they create content but for me; that is hardly a fair, unbiased, and factual look at a game.

1nsomniac9d ago

Get rid of the suits in the industry and job done!!

Garethvk9d ago

They usually are attached to the money sadly. It would be nice to have gamers in charge but you have so much money invested that business people are needed. Hence the issue; you need people who know business but are also gamers who know have an eye to the community. It sounds simple in theory that if you give gamers quality games that they want to play; money will be made. But that is not always so.
