Why is Trevor GTA V’s Most Beloved Video Game Character?

It’s funny but with GTA V right around the corner for PS4 & XOne, I thought I would ask everyone a quick question?

Why? Why in the world do people love Trevor in GTA V so much? Please do tell, no seriously go to the comments and speak your mind, tell me why do you think people love Trevor in GTA V.

You might be surprised at some of the answers, but I found it to be really interesting.

One day I was reading an article where they were talking about who is your favorite GTA V game character and I right away picked Michael. But at the time when I did this Trevor was winning by a huge amount. But go check it for yourself right now -( http://bit.ly/1x6sFFV )

Today almost a year later Michael has since overtaken Trevor, but Trevor is still a close second. And what’s funny is I think that’s just because people tend to relate more to Michael, but they love being Trevor.

And that speaks volume about us and video games as a whole. Why? Well it exposes something we may have never really understood properly. Video Games don’t cause violence. Let me say that again, Video Games really do not cause violence in any way. It really doesn’t, it’s more like a reflection of your own inner behavior then it is of being the reason why someone is violent -(but more on that later, or in another blog post, this is about Trevor)

So I decided to look into this, and it turns out, you are not sick, or psycho, or Crazy, but Trevor is, or at least that’s how it seems from the perception of the player.

Trevor goes 0 to a 100 real quick.. And in almost all situations in the game’s story, he fails to apply any brakes to any of his ventures to obtain his own version of capitalism. In fact everytime in the game when you think this can’t get any worst, and everything is already tense, here comes Trevor to pour gasoline on everything and take something that was already crazy, and turn it up a few levels to pure insanity.

Read on, it gets better. Not only does Trevor have an explosive view on everything, he turns out to be really funny at the same time. Now this is where and why the game really shines. And probably most likely why Trevor is so beloved.

Trevor is comedy in a world where things don’t seem to be funny at all. He makes light of every event and he also keeps the player from taken things too serious. That balance is very tricky, but very needed, and it’s done so well that you just associate it as part of just how Trevor is. He’s Crazy, he’s a complete psycho, and he’s also everything you want to say or do but can’t. Trevors real appeal is he allows us the player to do stuff you would never do in your real life. Sure that is what GTA is already all about, but trevor is like a dream within a dream.

He’s so far from your wildest fantasy that he is actually ten times more appealing. So in essence Trevor’s appeal is because he is everything you want to do and say, but you just don’t know you want to do and say that, until you actually play as him. Then and only then when you are playing as him in GTA V does your inner fantasy of becoming or being a complete crazy lunatic, does it come out.

To put it another way, you may hate your boss at work, but you're never going to go punch him in the face, you might want to, in a dream world, but you can’t do it in real life. That’s just not a real option, but that doesn’t mean you haven’t fantasized about doing it. And that’s healthy, it’s how we tend to deal with frustration, and this makes games like this really appealing, and it makes Trevor a wild ride that is seriously enjoyed by the masses.

Now I could go on and on, but what I really want to know is how did you fell about Trevor?
Was he a favorite character of yours in the game? Did the article get it wrong, is Trevor not the most favorite character?

Warning: minor spoilers of the GTA V narrative.

I actually don't much care for Trevor. He's my least played character of the three; I prefer Franklin, then Michael and even my mute GTAO character before Trevor. I have to admit though, some of Trevor's dialogue and moments were pretty great, especially his one-liners and lackadaisical, nonchalant apathy toward most things. I think my dislike for Trevor was automatic once he killed Johnny and I grew to tolerate him. I actually thought I was going to like Trevor the most back when the Michael/Franklin/Trevor trailer was unveiled pre-launch, but in reality, Trevor just makes me feel uncomfortable.

There are moments where I like him for a little while and appreciate his contribution to the game and the narrative, but he certainly is not a favourite. I actually prefer Steve Haines and Devin Weston, really. Trevor remains my least played character outside of the missions as well.

One thing I never really noticed until a couple of months ago is that his face...well, he looks like a human piranha.

Scar-3481d ago (Edited 3481d ago )

I never liked him I learned to tolerate him. LMFAO at the people that call him a dynamic character. Dexter is a dynamic character, Trevor is just a white trash psycho that behaves like a juvenile, I guess they were pandering to the majority of america so mission accomplished.

Seriously for all the praise this game gets all the writing was insanely underwhelming with trevor at the bottom of the barrel.

CertifiedGamer3481d ago

I actually liked him for killing Johnny, GTA fans hated Johnny so rockstar killed him off to let the fans know that their opinions matter to them.

Valenka3480d ago

What about those who actually liked Johnny? I guess our opinions don't matter. Still, it was nice to see some continuance in the lineage, with the appearances of both Johnny and Packie. Even Ashley and that United Liberty Paper fellow that ended up getting my bullet between his eyes.

SonyWarrior3479d ago

franklin was the worst character imo the most boring dull person in the game i dreaded playing as him and was upset at the last mission as there was no option to have him killed because i would have done that option. Trever was my fav and michael was great too him and his crazy family

Rickgrimes953475d ago

Trevor is such a layered character yes he is a bit crazy but he also has love in his heart, and if you kill Trevor at the end that's one of the saddest scenes I've ever seen in a game

Simply because he is such a dynamic character. I like Franklin, but Micheal doesn't change at all. He doesn't make any real breakthroughs with his therapist or his family, nor does he find his way back to being the man Trevor was friends with.

Trevor, like you said, goes from 0 to psychotic in 0.5 seconds. And that is what is so entertaining about him. He is a walking train wreck. You can't help but look away. Half the time I play him he is running around in tighty whiteys.

SuperBlur3478d ago

Long beard , aviator glasses , cap , briefs is all i need trevor wearing :P

bunfighterii3481d ago

I didn't like Trevor at all. Maybe I would have when I was a teenager, but I found him disturbing. I much preferred playing as Franklin or Michael.

oof463481d ago (Edited 3481d ago )

I think the reason why people like Trevor is because he is the embodiment of what a video game character should be. What I mean is, he is as crazy and psychotic as the actions you can perform in the game.

Take Red Dead Redemption. The actions you can perform have a disconnect with the personality and narrative of John Marston. But with Trevor, the gameplay matches the narrative.

More like 12 year...people have been going on about Japan or China since after Assassins Creed 3

Hell I even remember seeing people talk about it before Brotherhood or Revelations came out.

Ubisoft ignored people for over a decade and clearly decided to do it once they saw how successful games like Ghost of Tsushima become.

isarai6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Well, the funny thing is in the very first game once you unlock the eagle vision outside the Animus, people deciphered the writing on the wall and it gave a lot of hints to China and japan being the next or one of the next locations. And now they only do it when someone else already did it for them, and better imo.

Hell one of the directors literally addressed people's demands to.follow through on the hints the game had, and blatantly said they will never have an AC set in that location.

Me and my friends called it while playing GoT, like "i bet Ubisoft announces an AC game set in China or Japan now" and they announce TWO 🤣

Inverno5h ago

The creators had plans for this series which where put on hold indefinitely for the milking Ubi had planned. Pretty sure they were gonna take this to Japan after 2, but then focused on Ezio. Which is why the modern day stuff fell apart too.

notachance2h ago

They know it was heavily requested so they kept it as a trump card while milking the series until it was dry. GoT finally snapped their eyes open but since you can't just release a game on the spot it takes them this long for a catch up game.

Idk how successful it will be though, with all the controversies surrounding it, either about the race stuff or ubisoft bad practices in general.

-Foxtrot1h ago

Sad thing is rumour has it that the preorder sales are "very strong"

It's like people don't give a shit about Ubisofts shitty anti consumer practices.

notachance1h ago

seriously, with only a CGI trailer?

even the forced online to install from disc stuff didn’t deter people from preordering it? I guess they are comfortable with not owning their games indeed. $70 rental holy sh*t..

victorMaje3m ago

I fear there’s a growing amount of gamers that doesn’t know any better or have been conditioned to not care.
They just want the next toy to fiddle with & stream their playthrough online. I hope I’m wrong.

victorMaje10m ago

Exactly. Ghost of Tsushima scratched that itch & then some.
Thing is Sucker Punch focused on making a great game, Ubisoft’s focus is probably once anything but.

Better late than never. I haven’t been into an Ass Creed game since Black Flag and I only liked the non-Ass Creed parts of that game. This one will be the first I’ve played since Unity, which killed any interest I had with the series,

jznrpg1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Black Flag was a lot of fun for half of the game. But they had those stupid follow the guy missions that really broke the flow of the game and the fun. Rayman was a great too. But I haven’t wanted to play an UbiSoft game for many years and they are making it so I don’t

Friendlygamer5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Nah, tsushima is all countryside and beach and sekiro and nioh are fantasy, a more urban feudal japan setting is fresh. Besides we get a new European medieval game every 10 minutes, why can't multiple companies do Japan ? I would love onimusha, tenchu and way of the samurai to come back.

I hate the idea of a gaming company 'owning' a setting, I want more high budget cowboy games besides red dead !!!!

neutralgamer19922h ago

Ghost of Tsushima has set a high bar for games in the vein of Assassin’s Creed. While having more options is generally beneficial, Ubisoft seems to struggle with their direction, which can sometimes undermine those benefits. If it was not for the success of Tsushima I don’t think we would ever get assassin Creed game in Japan. Even now sucker punch are a much much smarter team of developers that did Tsushima And now we have Ubisoft who have 15 studios helping making one game

Games like Ghost of Tsushima, Nioh, and Sekiro stand out because they focus on gameplay and setting without the burden of microtransactions or mandatory online connections for single-player content. They prioritize quality over quantity, something Ubisoft could learn from.

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed game will inevitably be compared to its predecessors and other high-quality titles. It needs to meet or exceed these quality standards. We don’t need another 80-100 hour marathon; we need content that offers a compelling and engaging experience.

Instead of criticizing other companies for excelling, we should encourage Ubisoft to elevate their standards. No single company owns a setting or genre, but the quality of some releases naturally sets a benchmark for others. Let’s push for better quality from Ubisoft rather than lowering our expectations

Good-Smurf1h ago

Pretty much, I hate that if its western devs ARPG they either go middle ages knights and dragons castle town brown looking or its in sci-fi soap opera.
Please branch out for once ffs.

chicken_in_the_corn5h ago

Why release it at a time when the setting is so common? Releasing it now lets it stand out more.

banger884h ago

Too late, too woke and too anti-consumer with it's drm.
