Blu-Ray sales surging in Europe

The gloomy economic conditions and the current recession notwithstanding, gaming appear to be standing stoic - what with the flourishing sales of Blu-ray Disc movies and players all across Europe! In November, Blu-ray hardware sales - which include PS3 consoles - outsold DVD hardware sales, including PS2 consoles, by five times.

Most business analysts feel that 2008 has certainly "been a breakthrough year for Blu-Ray." British Blu-ray player owners bought nearly 462,500 titles in November, a 165% increase over the previous month. The latest numbers for December, released by the British Video Association (BVA) show that 'The Dark Knight' sold an astounding 513,000 units on the first day alone, and 21% of those sales were Blu-Ray.

EU has always been a PS homecountry. It just continues to dominate every day. The PS3 dosent need a price cut at all its F!cking cheap innof.

Ngai6032d ago

Ive just seen a ps3 for 333,- including LBP at the Media Markt! Wow lol. I payed 600 euro for mine with nothing on release :) But hey! Thats already 2 years ago. Go grab you ps3 today! So cheap!!

Ryangp6032d ago

I wonder why sony keep screwing us over, we haven't even got the video store yet. Americans get everything. :(

Xelai6032d ago

I assume that all readers of this site are intelligent enough to know this article is spitting nonsense, and all rosy commentaries are coming more from a ironic standpoint than real opinion.

First of all, says Blu Ray players are selling 5 times more than DVD players, including PS3 and PS2, do we include Xbox 360 as a DVD player? Is the PS3 plus BR standalones selling 5 times what the PS2 is selling? Or PS2 plus Xbox 360 plus all DVD Standalones?

Seems a bit farfetched at least.

Second, the article only gives figures for the UK but claims the data valid for all Europe.

Then, we know that this season every product has a month per month increaes, I bet that even the Bible had an increaes in sales from last month to this one.

Thirdly, all data and rosy perspective is extrapolated from fisrt day sales of a single title, that manages to sell in Blu Ray 21% in the UK. Nice number, but lets see the rest of the catalogue, the rest of the month, and the rest of the year to have enough data to make a serious analysys.

I know people in this site want Blu Ray to be a success just for the sake of Sony, no problem with that but at least try and choose logical articles that claim true stuff.

Blu Ray is doing a bit better than expected, that is enough to think of a promising future with real data rather than making snakeoil seller claims and fill the comments section with "we r the best" chants.

Ju6032d ago

Try to low ball it whatever you want. Fact is, BD sells.

Xelai6032d ago

I see poeple do not like fact versus fiction, nor reading. Keep dreaming pals.

It is nor dropping ball, Blu Ray sells, just it is not necessary to believe or write crap to defend it.

There is a difference, but people in this site are so blind they really do not care.

As always sad, as always people disagreeing to plain facts and data that do not fit their agenda.

@Ju

I do not even care to disagree to your drop ball comment, dropping ball is making up nonsense out of thin air, not looking at the article and saying it is crap and that before claiming vistory is best to wait for more comprehensive and complete data.

But you know, fanboys are as they are, cannot change that.

Sarcasm6032d ago

Xelai you have a point.

But the point is that Blu-Ray isn't "dead" and is growing at a healthy rate.

Shouldn't take an overly complicated response to such a simple message.

And you didn't know? Logic isn't allowed on N4G.

:)

Xelai6032d ago

That is the point, I never said Blu Ray is not selling, or that it is not selling more, or that it may not have a bright future. I said the article is full of crap and makes no sense.

But any fanboys around here will just skim over the lines and think that anything that goes against the dogma of their cultists believes is an attack.

As I said, I could not care less, I just repeated and explained on the facts the article exposed, so everyone who disagress shows the kind of IQ he has.

Ju6032d ago

I agree with the article, though (I know, I know, its my IQ).

Xelai6032d ago

Ok, so Europe is the UK and Blu Ray players are selling five times what DVD players are selling, including consoles.

Fine. It is N4G, anything is possible.

All the PS3 needs is a price cut and it will be PS2 sales all over again. Remember part of the reason the PS2 sold so much was because of the included dvd capabilities. A £200 PS3 will be perfect for 2009.

Tacticity6032d ago (Edited 6032d ago )

It dosent need a price cut, its f!cking cheap innof. Why does so many people complain about these f!cking price cuts.

solidjun56032d ago

...is in a pickle right now and most people find it hard to spend $400 dollars when they have their mortgage and credit situation to resolve. I agree, the PS3 is cheap...relatively. You get great value for $400 dollars (Wi-fi, blu-ray, media server, etc...) but a price cut will help a LOT.

Shane Kim6032d ago

Well that's the hardcore gamers mind. Before I moved away from my parents house (that was little more than a year ago) my dad wanted a Blu-Ray player. Now I allready had a PS3 and I told him, but he insisted on getting a standalone BD-player and I was like WTF? Are you stupid. Guess he is.

killer_trap6032d ago

it's just amazing how things can turn around in one month. first blu ray and hopefully in 2009 PS3.

Tacticity6032d ago (Edited 6032d ago )

Those people that has that problem thats there problem. Sony cant keep cutting price cuts every time sombody complains about it. If they cut down the price even just 200 dollars people will just ask for more price cuts. The problem is that many people combine the Wii, and the 360 prices with the PS3 and just isent possible. The PS3 is not a normal machine its a f!cking beast. Its so much more to offer then what the Wii and the 360 has to offer and thats the fact. This is business not a fun shop.

As someone who has been gaming nearly as long as gaming has been around (since the early 70's), you'd think I'd be against this. Having grown up with all the major platforms and the whole notion of physical ownership... but I'm not. i embrace this as it is a revolutionary convenience. And one i know for a fact many (especially here) have not even given the fair chance to use. I get it... i was there too. But now i have a new outlook on it. It really is a hell of an option if you just want to play with no commitments. By no means am i saying this should replace traditional gaming, its an option. And one that people should look at optimistically as a way to compliment traditional gaming. There is room for both to thrive.

I tend to use streaming on new games in GamePass. To see if I like the game. If I do, I'll download it for a better experience. It's so convenient & useful.

Project: Horned Owl Review

From the mid-1980s to the early part of the 2000s, light gun rail shooters were a staple in both arcade and home system gaming. Arguably, the genre started to really hit its stride in the mid-1990s. While games like Time Crisis, Virtual Cop, and House of the Dead, among others, dominated both the home system and arcade space, some one relegated to only home game systems. Today, we’ll be talking about a little-known cult game published by Sony called Project: Horned Owl. This game was developed by Alfa Systems, and all in all, this is a fun game.

AMD CEO Shares Vision Behind Xbox Partnership and Next-Gen Chip Roadmap

AMD CEO Lisa Su talks about the Xbox AMD partnership, next-gen Ryzen + Radeon chips, and AI rendering tech coming to all Xbox devices.

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

InUrFoxHole8d ago

They had best show 3yrs in a row. Heading for another

VenomUK8d ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

Agent758d ago

But Microsoft forgot the games.

KwietStorm_BLM8d ago

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Ganif8d ago

Correct.

"Sony's PlayStation 6 reportedly will feature an AMD semi-custom APU with a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, capable of 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS gaming. The console will include X3D cache and advanced AI upscaling technology."

I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released.

Notellin8d ago

You should have just lead this comment with the fact that you have zero understanding of technology in the consoles and instead have a Toms Hardware online forum level of education.

Very interesting theory. Still not sure how MS would actually make it work.

KwietStorm_BLM8d ago

"I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released."

How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is.

Obscure_Observer7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

"How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is."

Dude, what I know for certain is that a tech as old as X3D chips which is actually *older* than both PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, is hardly the reason behind this new partnership between AMD and MS to build new *custom silicon* for next generation of consoles.

And yes it´s a huge announcement since AMD is working closely with MS to co-develop custom SoC which will allow backwards compatibility across all MS´s next gen devices allowing seamless integration between devices and full backwards compatibility across all generations of Xbox consoles.

I also know is that this announcement don´t have anything to do with Playstation and their strategy with AMD for the PS6, so stop comparing the two pretending that you know what´s going on, because you clearly don´t.

If Sony is working on something remotely similar, that´s remain to be seen.

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

Obscure_Observer9d ago

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

Shares vision....we provide chips for money, this deal will sell many chips, we will make lots of money...good vision

Christopher9d ago

The marketing behind this is so heavy that I worry about the actual outcome. Why are they just not showing us the product, why all this talking in market speak?

Lightning778d ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

Eonjay8d ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer8d ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.
