LittleBigPlanet was one of the most anticipated PS3 games of 2008. But the game did not sell as expected. Now weeks later of the release of the sweet game, the sales are growing. Find the statics after the jump!

That this game has legs. It's going to keep selling for a long a time. The graphics will take a long time to get old and the game play is so much fun and easy to play. With the added support from MM and Sony, this game will last well into the future.

I made a bet with my wife that if she beat me in Madden, I would buy LBP for Ps3 when I get a Ps3... Unfortunately, I lost!

So I guess you can add another sale to that one. Maybe I might end up liking it anyway! I read some of the reviews and it seems OK. Maybe I just misjudged it cause I like more mature games.

No offense but who cares about sales in Japan? Publishers do and believe me, they are caring enough for all of us. Free your mind of such numbers and focus on the one thing that matters to us gamers, gaming. More or less sales of this game will not make it any better or worse than it is already. The game is a true masterpiece and while it is a shame that many folks have not played it and own a PS3, I do not lose any sleep over it. I do however lose sleep with LBP. That game has stolen hours and hours of my life and I am grateful! lol

If you look at the big picture you will see that there were a lot of great games to buy for the ps3.
The only reason sales were down is because of money issues. I personally can't buy Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, End War, And Far Cry 2 all at once. I was in the LBP beta and enjoyed it very much. Now I'm finally getting it.

not news to me, part of the issue is the timing/economy, the other is that as far as my region/area of the world is concerned, I never ONCE saw this game advertised outside ONE magazine ad I saw for it. It wasn't on Mountain Dew cans or plastered on every visible surface, go figure....and as a result, my throat feels better, nothing was shoved down it from a company. I know of the game and am probably getting it for Christmas, it'll be a slow uptake but it will sell.

And to add, this doesn't make the game "better" just as "poor sales" didn't make it a flop, as all the fantards said a while back. They get this insane notion in their thick heads that sales equal quality, and to that, Porsche and penthouse living quarters say hi....stupid fanboys....They never get it. It will always be considered a great game, that doesn't fluctuate with sales figures.

Don't you mean fortunately? Have you ever played LBP? If not you just might like it. Did you ever like side scrolling games from the old 2D world of gaming? That's what LBP is actually. A way to make your own 2D games. It's a little more than 2D but not much. It's a fun game though.

Exactly. But look for sales. I bought Motorstorm Pacific Rift and Far Cry 2 on sale. I got Far Cry 2 at Best Buy for $39.99 and they gave me a $10 gift card. The next week I got Motorstorm Pacific Rift for the same price but used my gift card so it was $30. I got those two games for $10 more than the regular price of one of them. So there are a lot of great deals out there now if you want more games.

I saw a player created lvl today on lbp which had been played by 1,2m players. I don't think that every person which have bought LBP has access to internet and have played just that specific lvl.

The MGS add-on/DLC could well see sales increase in Japan too, as its not just some costumes, its a massive deal and they worked with the MGS team on it, I say well done MM and can't wait to see what else they do

well, not JUST because of it. How many people really know about the DLC? Only, people who are into it enough to visit these kinds of sites. There hasn't really been an ad campaign for it. Also, saying it's the DLC indicates that people who didn't like the game enough before have miraculously changed their mind because of the MGS DLC. While I am sure this is true for some I don't think it's true for most. If they knew about the game before and decided they didn't like the game I don't think they are likely to like the game now.

I think it's simply due to word of mouth. People just haven't been aware of what the game is like or about. Because sony haven't advertised it much the most advertisement this game gets is from people talking about it and saying how good it is. However, this process is obviously a lot slower than just blatting every TV screen with game ads.

Contrary to this though, I have seen a few more adds on TV selling LBP so maybe this is a factor as well.....

I honestly didn't think LBP was doing bad at all. When the NPD results for October came out, alot of people on here and on many websites (the usual fanboy bunch) "lol'd" at how bad it sold in october, but never took into account it came out at the end of october.

The game is advertised alot over here (uk and Ireland tv channels), and marketed VERY well. The metal mullet ad, the bbq ad and the broken heart ad. Each one as good as the last and they really do give you an idea of what is possible in this game. Anytime I mention LBP to friends (no one I know has a ps3 btw) they usually say "oh damn, i seen the ads for that, whats it like, I'd love to buy a ps3 for that, can i come over and play it?" and the usual stuff like that. This from gamers AND non-gamers.

The majority of my friends own 360's, yet this game has finally made them pay attention to the ps3 for once. In fact I guarantee if it wasn't so expensive, they'd probably all consider buying one (we are all in our early 20's, either in college, living away from home or even both so, money isn't readily available :P).

But yeah it doesn't surprise me that sales are increasing for this game, and I'd say its not just word of mouth alone like coolfool mentioned, but rather its an interest sparked by the advertisements over here, which got people asking questions, which then led to word of mouth. At least thats how it panned out on my side of the fence. I also doubt DLC is a selling factor (at least not a huge deciding factor, i'd say 5% at most for increased sales are because of DLC.)

Its also the first console game I've really had that has actually got my Girlfriend HOOKED to gaming (not including rock band, guitar hero 2 or bioshock on the 360) so I fail to see how in early november people were shouting about how it had bombed, that it was a flop, or sony's new mascot was an utter failure (just look around N4G and i'm sure you'll find someone saying it).

Alot of the negative things about the game, usually stem from propaganda by fanboys who are either extremely immature (usually the case), THINK they live in a competitive world and so must make sure to remind everyone, constantly, that their console of choice is the best and everything else sucks, or they could only afford one console or their mommy would only buy them one, so out of angst they rally against the other consoles, so they don't feel so bad about not been able to enjoy the games the other console has to offer. So they slander the opposition's games usually resulting in decreased sales (scientists should do a study on fanboys and see if they actually do effect game sales!). But heres a suggestion, why not, oh i dunno, find a friend who has a console you don't have, and trade for a while? let him play some of your consoles games, and vice versa. Just ENJOY games.

As least Sony get more money from it with little advertising. I seen a lot of peopel getting the game the last week which is a good thing.

If the advertised it like Gears or something they would be receiving less profit from it.

Playstation brand games never sold game on a massive scale as we have seen as the followers are more diverse then 360 while the 360 is far more concentrated. The same 2 or 3 games will sell massively on the 360 (usually shooters) but on PS3 the sales are lower as it doesn't have a huge single sector base.

PS3 games sell more over longer periods than the 360 and LBP proves it.

As for me I love RPG's and I bought a few for the PS3, I like platformers and the only shooter I really liked is Resistance series and if a new IP which Sony seens to be getting have been good LBP is the crown but most other games don't interest me.

Well I helped LittleBigPlanet already by buying the LBP PS3 pack some time ago.

Good games and good devs need to be supported. Yes I still dislike the PS3 in general, BUT Media Molecule needs to be backed up to be able to make more great games.

Even for a 360 fan and not so much PS3 fan its sad to see that some talented studios are having hard times now or closing down. Although talent always start something new, the guys won't dissapear totally ofcourse.

WHY AREN'T THOSE 15 OR 17 MILLION PS3 OWNERS BUYING LBP??? Tell me that. Software sales are shiat on the PS3. Why. The game is a 9.5 out of 10, highest scoring exclusive on the PS3. Casual as well as a hardcore gamer like me will enjoy the game. You'll play with a smile, your girlfriend will like it also. PS3 OWNERS STEP UP AND SUPPORT THIS GAME even if you're not supporting the PS3 come on. These sales are still pretty lame for such a great scoring game.

BTW: in the link its said CDWow sells LBP for 36 Euro incl. shipment. That's true. I bought LBP as a birthday present for somebody and had it in a special offer @ CDWow for 32 Euro incl. shipment. Its a PAL version coming from Hong Kong, send through Switserland so no import costs are added. It arrived within 7 days new in plastic.

What about all the people who have had theirs break down on them at the beginning of the system's lifespan, and have purchased another? At the time Gears of War 1 released, there was an installed base of max. 10 mln. 360 owners and it sold 4 to 5 mln. within about 5 months then back at the end of 2006 and beginning of 2007.

Plus: how many of the 360 owners own more then one 360? Same as with the 100 to 120 mln. PS2 owners

And still:

5.5 copies sold on about 10 mln. 360 users back at the end of 2006, and some extra copies later to the rest of the audience built up to 25 mln. users now, that's about 50% of the users that bought Gears 1 back then.

Gears is also M rated. So?

Having sold 3 mln. copies to about 100 mln (lets keep it low cut 20 mln. to those that had to rebuy the console or have more then one), that's freaking 3% that bought it. Compare that to the about 50% Gears 1 sold. Or Halo 3 if you want.

Wait. Lets say 50 mln. real PS2 owners, that makes it sold to 6% of all users. STILL PATHETIC

Lets see what the sales of Gears 2 are. And compare that to PS3 IP's like Resistance 2, LBP, MGS4. Just see how Playstation owners spend less money on games, like the PS2 users did. The reason that LBP initially failed to sell was down to the lack opf advertising - Just look at the sales since the tv adverts have been showing - almost 85% increase in sales NOW THAT PEOPLE KNOW OF THE GAME!!
Just remember - there are a ton of gamers out there who only read mags like zoo/nuts and only see those type of reviews - LBP has and will continue to see a sales growth and all down to Sony finally laying off dead wood and spending the money on MARKETING!

LBP is a weird one. The hardcore fear its too casual. The casuals fear its too hardcore.

Once the masses realise the game can be enjoyed at any level you like, for whatever parts of it you like, then it should really stretch its legs.

I think LBP is really going to be a 'long tail' game.

I don't consider it a flop at all. It's probably made it's money back already.

I do think Sony missed Phil Harrison for the launch of this title. He had the vision to bring MM on board and really gave them the space to develop LBP. When he left I'm not sure Sony knew exactly what they had on their hands - which is why the marketing was so muddled.

Actually this game should have released on the Wii (it fits the audience better and sales would have been higher I guess) and it would be great to have had it on the 360. I knew this! LBP is the kind of game that doesn't wow you much the first time and you dismis it as a kiddy game. I don't really care about sales figures but I expect LBP to be a game that will be selling well for a long time, the more content people create the better it will be and the more people will look at the game as being worth buying. Out the box it was always gonna be a slow starter but those who did buy it can now say that they are helping spread the game with their creations.

Think of it like this, Half Life still sells well today 9 years after launch, its not the game itself that makes people keep buying it but the mods which interest people and make them eep coming back; the more LBP levels people create of high quality then the more chance that a person will see something of value in the package.

Games are expensive. If I don't buy it right now, it does not mean that I don't intend buying it at all. MGS4, KZ2, R2, R&C, LBP, etc etc. There is a lot of games out now, and how many games does the average console owner buy over the lifetime of the console? 30? 100? LBP will sell for a long time to come. Ninty still advertises Wii Sports, and it is still selling well. It is not as if it is a limited edition that will only be available for a week. LBP is at 1.3 million already. Not bad for a 12 person studio.

Microsoft said Gears 2 sold like 2.1 million on launch day and then it after the month of november was over, the amount sold was 2.1 million and 1 of the 360 fans that posted before me said Gears is at 2.7 million sold. That would mean Gears 2 sold around 600,000 in the month of december (right when it should pick since it's almost christmas and all). Little Big Planet had about 1 million in sales after a whole month and this month it's actually selling better than the launch month; this means its increasing in sales.

Mathematically speaking, the sales of Gears 2 can be represented with a negative (declining)function at t=1,2,3 and beyond ( t = time and it's the domain or independent variable, and sales would be the dependent variable or the range, t=0 is launch day, 1 is the day after and so forth). It would form a simple graph really.
at t=0, the corresponding y variable would be at the top of the graph and all other corresponding y-values as time progresses would be lower than their preceding values with the occasional spikes (of course).

LBP would not fall into this traditional function because of Sony's marketing and its appeal. It sales went up on launch day but the Y-value at t=0 is probably around 1/1000th, that of Gears with a slight decline in Y-values until the december marketing started, at this point the sign of the function changes from negative to positive, this is called an inflection point. The sales function is now a positive one.

When two lines are going in opposite directions on a very large domain (large time span for video game availability), they are bound to meet at some point on the graph. You can use a differential equation to predict when this could happen barring extraneous factors. This mathematical scenario would likely represent the sales of Gears 2 and LBP till around January to February. After that more factors come into play like competition, Gears 2 has less competition now and won't get any worthwhile competition till march 3 on the 360 market, while LBP has been facing much more competition on the PS3 market and will face more when WKC and Killzone 2 come out between now and March.

By the way, LBP sales function will start decreasing at about January and February but considering that it will most likely be bundled and it sales so far show that it has more consistent sales patterns than Gears, it still makes sense that the two lines will intersect.

In conclusion, Gears 2 and LBP will most likely be about the same with one have a few thousand more sales.

Games tend to 'chart' lower the further away it gets from their release (and as newer and bigger titles come out) 'unless', low and behold, they're not the 'flops' they're proclaimed as being - week 2 or whatever - from fanatical mud throwing ('please let it stick!') xbox360 users and their like.

Some have mentioned 'dramatic price cuts' on the game. Fair call - only problem is LBP, on Amazon UK etc, moved up into the top half dozen sellers there 'long before' the price cuts we're seeing now (in fact, it hasn't budged for over a month after initially pegging in the mid 50's). Likewise for it's number one slot in DVD.co.uk etc.

The US isn't quite as dramatic, but it's still a good story. Amazon US, for instance, had the game charting at 60ish a month ago. Now it's consistently just outside the top 25, at full retail price - the only non Nintendo products above it are Gears of War 2 (a couple of spots higher) and Call of Duty 360 version (discounted $10) a dozen or so spots higher.

It really is baffling why people slung so much crap at this particular game. The hostility, and the sheer impatience of calling it out as a flop long before it had ever actually flopped - and as it in fact looked more and more likely to profit from word of mouth daily - was one of the more unpleasant demonstrations of fanboyism i've seen lately.

As I said in my previous post me an my psn friends get the word out like no other. I know a lot of people that thought like me in the beginning that maybe it would be kiddy or something. I'm glad I got the beta an ultimately the final game because it is down right amazing. With MM's support, graphics, gameplay an support from fans creating great levels I can't describe the fun. Also to some of the people saying it should have been on the wii, part of the immersion is the fact that the game looks so good. You can see every little strand an so much detail an I'm still on SD so I can't imagine when I go HD in a few days.

With about 5 new playstation commercials out an about 3 showing the game 2 being just for the game of course its going up a lot of people were just getting some intimidate games out of the way they knew they wanted. Just between my friends on the psn we have probably gotten 30 to 40+ people to buy LBP after they hear us talking about it in playstation home trust me this game is on fire. An with the support looking something like Burnout Paradise possible sales are gonna go nuts for a long time. Maybe after all the sales I'm sure they are getting on the DLC will get FF sets or the killzone sackboy free doubt it but it would be nice.

LBP is the suxxorz. I personally can size up any game and tell you if I will like it or not. I don't hate LBP but a fair amount of videos... and I was through with it. No sale for me but simply because it's not my type of game. Another thing, how can LBP be for the masses if the controls aren't "easy enough" for the masses. Content creation? It takes too long for the "casual" to learn it and really utilize the feature. For the masses...not!

You don't have to even touch the create mode, i have had this game since day one and the only time i went into create was to do the tutorials, i'm too busy having fun on the single player and community levels to bother trying to create. Does this mean i'm missing out ? Not at all ,my 5 year old son and i have logged an embaressing amount of hours on this game and will continue to do so for a long time, this game will get better and better and as far as i'm concerned will never get traded.

A game for the masses ? Without a shadow of a doubt and hopefully "the masses" will realise that this is not just a kiddie game, it's a game which is simply loads of fun for all ages.

It's great to see this game doing so well. Well done MM for having the vision to try something different and whoever picked this up for Sony should be "Knighted", like a fine wine this game will just get better and better with age.

The thing about this game is, it's not going to tempt all that many hardcore, but I can see casual players that don't know a whole lot about video games, mom's and dad's seeing this game game on the shelf advertised with the system that really want to pick it up. The sack characters screams like it would be fun something, that people who don't have a system want to pick it up. Only problem is price still.

Price doesn't come into it, we're not talking about selling PS3, just talking about the sales of LBP.

I too like to think of myself as a hardcore gamer and i got it on day one, as did most of the people on my friends list.

Sony's titles are known to sell good in a console lifetime. With all the LBP bashing last month on sales compared to GOW 2 or Fallout 3. What did gamers and analysts expect for a game that is just beginning a fan base. LBP is a game you can expand on through time, and the MGS add-on look like just the beginning.

It is starting to sell well. I got it back in November and I could find it at any electronics store. My brother wants it for x-mas so I was on the hunt for it. I went to Best Buy 4 times this past week, Circuit City once, and Wal-Mart twice. All sold out and every shipment they get in sells. So maybe it finally has picked up steam. It is a great game and easy to play for those who do not play games as much. I ended up having to get a different game instead earlier today.

once people play then create, they will eventually start to wonder what this whole share thing is. they may get online and download a level or two. they'll see the MGS content and play it (yes even though you don't have the pack you can still play levels built with it) they'll wonder why they haven't got that content... they may use their own initiative and check PSN or they may ask friends with the game or in the know and find out that way... this thing is going to spiral out of control eventually and WILL become a phenomenon. LBP is never going to stop selling

on a side note: even if this game sells for £5 the money it will generate just for the downloadable content alone will make MM very rich indeed

I always have to laugh at reports that say a game isn't selling well after a couple weeks. Some games sell huge the first week. Other games start slow and pick up over time. LBP is one of those games.

Besides, it's one of those games a lot of people are probably buying as Christmas presents. That type of game doesn't always sell on day one. The Christmas season isn't over yet. People should just give game sales more time before reporting a game as a failure.

I remember how Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank started off slow too yet they ended up with really good sales numbers. I guess Halo and Gears of War have ruined it for the rest of the games. Just because those series sell big right away doesn't mean all games should.

Anybody that thinks this is some new trend is a complete "ZERO". Heck, Nintendogs has jumped in sales. So has Chia pets gone up in sales.

LittleBigPlanet is a phenomenal game. One of the most unique gaming experiences I have had in years. Great, great game.

With that said, Media Molecule and LBP deserve better than what Sony has dealt them. LBP had the amazing ability to turn heads just from it being so damn adorable, but Sony did little to show off this amazing new creation. No, Sony would rather focus all their attention on Blu Ray. Pssst Sony, everyone knows it plays Blu Ray, thats all we've heard for over 2 years now. Don't you think its about time you told people about the games too? Absolutely pathetic that LBP has been neglected in favor of Blu Ray. LBP is 100x better than BRD will ever be.

Obviously, its Christmas time. Every game is gonna sell more then usual this time of year. That's also the reason the game continues to sell like ass in Japan - they don't celebrate Christmas(not like us, at least). If it keeps going up in Jan. 2009 and following, then lets talk.

Sony never advertise this game in my area (N.Y.C. mayor metropolitan area) until now, but I think it’s too late for that. It took Sony two months in order to have a TV ad witch doesn't explain very much about the game. It’s the same thing that happened with the ps3 no good ads or none for period’s times. Don’t expect someone to buy something from you if you are not providing information about it. I love my Ps3 and that’s the only system I currently have, but Sony mess it up for thinking the brand was going to sell the system. The consumer this time around it’s more demanding and knowledgeable.

I'm sure every game and system would like their holiday numbers post holidays. Not sure what that's got to do with LBP's endurance and direction thus far, though.

The numbers might be smaller, but the games that are most popular during the holidays are the same ones that are most popular outside the holidays. The only question is how front end loaded individual game sales (and types) are, and whether they catch on or not.

It's too early to say absolutely, but i think given it's now a couple of months into the titles life - newer games have been released since - and it's as much or more in the spotlight as at release - as well as climbing on individual charts like-for-like against other titles also benefiting from the holidays - suggests this one is experiencing this thing known as 'legs'.

Indeed, as far as holidays go, if anything a PS3 game ought to be heading in the opposite direction to the one LBP is charting, given the PS3 itself is growing by a much smaller potential audience number (hardware base) each week versus those of the xbox360 and Wii.

I too have logged a stupid amount of hours with the game with my 4yrold.

And i just gotta say this. Video's don't tell you nothing.

Until you have the game in your hands, and how it feels,movement,rumble, so many amazing thing can be done with it.

But as of date it's sold 1.4million. Did i expect it to sell more, of course.

What's been said before, if it was on the wii. of course it'd be a 10million already,rofl

So it's still selling well and i'm sure xmas it'll do well.

Remember, people making new content, and some of them are crazy.

But overall the trouble with SONY is the advertising. A new game comes out and you advertise the sh^t out of it. RamP up those tv ads all day.

That's what M$ does even with it's smaller games.
