Pachter 'Not Convinced GTA IV Will Be Take-Two's Panacea'

In his latest notes on Take-Two's recently announced financial results, Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter has expressed some skepticism over how bright the future might be for the company, with doubts about GTA IV's impact on the bottom line.

"We are not convinced that GTA IV will be the panacea that investors anticipate," said Pachter, noting that while trends following the release of prior volumes in the series have generated operating income in the range of $150 million, Take-Two currently is running at an operating loss of $85 million, expecting GTA's release to bring that back to $114 million.

Gta should sell quite a few xbox 360's and ps3's. The episodic content for 360 might make it sell more for 360 but the new GTA 4 is sure to convert quite a few ps2 owners. I know a couple of ppl buying PS3's for GTA4 dnt knw anyone buying 360's for GTA4 cus IMO most 360 owners are attracted to different games.

volkov1375972d ago (Edited 5972d ago )

I believe 360 owners will be equally excited for it, if not more so. If anything, the PS3 markets more to the Japanese gaming crowd, which typically don't have the qualities of the GTA series.

BUT I think you are right in saying that it won't sell as many 360s at PS3s, because the 360 has already had so many heavily pushed blockbuster hits, both exclusive and not.

The PS2 did benefit greatly from GTA, but I think that audience was weary when it came to choosing a next-gen console when it came to game selection. Now that crowd might have something great to look at, in the addition to Drake's Fortune and UT3.

Love, a PC gamer.

Pachter is the same guy who says Mass Effect is going multi-platform even though MS owns publishing rights to the license now. His opinion means nothing at this point.

Chris_GTR15973d ago

are you retarded? EA owns the rights to mass effect. MS just published the first game. patcher said that MASS EFFECT (trilogy of games) might come to ps3. MS only owns the first part.

GunShotEddy5972d ago

Thanks for calling me retarded my simple friend. Too bad you don't know what you're talking about.

EA owns BioWare now. Thus own the rights to all IPs that BioWare owned. this includes Mass Effect. Sadly, that's where your education stopped and stupidity began.

EA has brokered a deal with MS giving MS the rights to publish Mass Effect 2 and 3 with EA and BioWare both be listed as developers.

Now go ahead, hit google and get smart. Try not to call people retarded when you don't know what you're talking about.

vgn245972d ago (Edited 5972d ago )

He's right. MS did get the deal to publish the franchise (1 though 3). Honestly, who cares? We have plenty of games on PS3, one of which is the "actual" topic of this story.

Both of you need to refrain from name calling on here. It doesn't get either point across.

"Microsoft Game Studios' Phil Spencer recently told UK-based Develop magazine that Mass Effect will continue to be an important franchise for the company. A source close to the games was more to the point, telling us that Microsoft will publish Mass Effect 2 and 3, while BioWare and EA will be listed as the sequels' developers. "

it's in the lastest issue of EGM.

wow, pwned twice in the same thread. time to pack it up and head home man...

I think GTA IV will sell more than any other game released on next gen consoles. It's the typical kind of first game you pick up when buying a console. I also think it will be one of the major factors that make gamers take the jump from PS2 to next gen.

sonarus5973d ago

i completely agree. Lots of ps2 owners will make the jump over this game. Personally i am not excited for GTA as i have never been excited over any GTA game. However i have enjoyed all the games in the series so will definetly pick this one up. I feel what will most likely determine which console will benefit more from GTA4 would probably be price. Which console can i play GTA4 on for the smallest amount of money. If sony is lucky enough to launch GTA4 and MGS4 within a month or 2 of each other they can institue a price cut to capitalize on the momentum of both these games. However would be suprised if msoft dosent have similar plans. For those ps2 owners that can afford it, GTA4 will sell well for both consoles i personally didnt buy my ps3 for GTA and definetly isnt a system seller by any means for me but i knw a lot of ppl that are GTA crazy.

InMyOpinion5973d ago

The most logical outcome would be that the PS3 will be the console that will profit most from it, since it's a franchise most people associate with the PS2.

vgn245972d ago

Depends on what they want. We'll most likely have shorter load times (if any), but they get the episodic content that adds more to the game.

Either version will be great. But I don't think anyone besides a fanboy can guess which version will sell more right now.

InMyOpinion5972d ago

I don't think most regular people are aware of the episodic content.

It's hard to tell how well this game will sell...I would say on a Worldwide....Roughly 2 million on the PS3 and about 3.5 million on the 360...

HarryEtTubMan5972d ago

lol LIFETIME? You are woff man... games dont only sale the first week. This will be out 9 years on the PS3.... even though they will make 2 or 3 more before the PS3 is dead. Its gonna sale alot... TRUST ME...not only 2 million lifetime on the PS3!

DrPirate5973d ago

No matter what, this game will sell. Everyone agrees.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies18h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken13h ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing691d 5h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker1d 5h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing691d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos1d 1h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt16h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken13h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
