IGN: Hands-on with near-final Burnout Paradise

It's no secret that Criterion Games likes to reinvent things every time out. Though many deemed Burnout 3: Takedown to be pretty much perfection, the studio went ahead and changed a lot of things with its follow-up, Burnout Revenge. And now with Burnout Paradise, the studio has made even more sweeping changes to the design.

as a Burnout fan, hearing great news, previews, images, videos etc etc, makes me more anxious to play that game.

only less than 4 hours befor Demo TIMMMMMMMME!!!

Relcom5993d ago

The PSN is gonna go slow cause i'm sure everyones gonna download this.
I know i will.

Rythrine5993d ago

Somehow, I knew MK_Red will be here lolz. On topic, never played any Burnout before (Sorry burnout fans, GT4 took most of my racing time in the PS2) but I'll give it a try when the demo hits tomorrow here in the US. It looked good in the trailers I've downloaded so definitely looking forward for this one.

MK_Red5993d ago

Well, I'm a Burnout addict and have to be in full Burnout mode :)
Hope you try and enjoy Burnout Paradise. It will be a really incredible and mindblowing experience if previous games are any indications.

Kleptic5993d ago

this will be the first burnout game I have purchased...

a friend of mine loved the series on ps2...and we played it a lot, but I too was mostly a GT fan when it came to investing a lot of time into a racing game...and didn't dislike any of the burnout games, just never got around to purchasing them...

this sandbox gameplay stuff looks absolutely awesome though...the way you get unlocked cars, and the way online play is brought in...it sounds awesome...can't wait now...

Rythrine5993d ago

@ MK
Thanks, man. I know this franchise and Fallout series brings you out of hiding lolz.

@ Kleptic
Same here, man. GT4 took a lot of my time. All those cars to be unlocked was addicting. I'll say I missed out a lot of great racers in my ps2 days, Burnout and Midnight Club franchises to name a few. Money was a little tight back then so sacrifices had to be made :)

Relcom5993d ago

I have never disliked a burnout game. I'll always trust their changes until further notice, they have always done it right. Can't wait to play the demo after work.

MK_Red5993d ago

True. After Burnout 3 I couldn't possibly imagine a better racing and Burnout experience but then, they made Revenge which I've played to death and still love.

MaximusPrime5993d ago

Burnout Revenge is great fun. I played it on both PS2 and xbox 360.

I think Criterion messed up this "traffic checking". My brother disliked it thats why he prefer Burnout 3.

I personally think it is fun and funny. Especially when you "traffic checked" and took down somebody behind.

MK_Red5993d ago

I did the same and played and loved it on both PS2 and 360.
I have to disagree with you on "traffic check". I actually think it was perfect and loved it.
Sadly, it's most likly gone here and the Showtime is a mix of Crash and that mode.

Douchebaggery5993d ago

I've read somewhere that you can turn traffic check on or off the same way you can choose what type of burnout you want.

Relcom5993d ago

Traffic check is kinda cheezy but its kinda fun too. So it being optional is perfect +1 for criterion

MK_Red5993d ago

Are you sure? That would be sick and uber awesome.

NanoGeekTech5993d ago

I wonder will it be a Multiplayer demo or single player? or maybe all of the above.

MaximusPrime5993d ago

according to criterion ( http://www.criteriongames.c...
the demo is less than 4 hrs away and online will be available. How cool is that??

Relcom5993d ago

Its a multiplayer online demo??????? If thats true that unprecedented for a demo for a console.

Skerj5993d ago (Edited 5993d ago )

Depends on where you are, the clock says 8 hours for me :( but I got a EU store account :D and yeah the demo is MP as well from what I've heard. I'll see you guys on PSN tonight.

Relcom5993d ago

So this is realy MP? Thats the greatest thing ever. My new favorite demo if true.

Skerj5993d ago

@Relcom

Yup bro, Gamespy said it:
http://ps3.gamespy.com/play...

"Beyond the single-player experience, you'll also have online access within the demo. Like switching CDs while you're driving, it's distracting to hit the right button and search around, but the interface is pretty clean and easy to navigate.

You'll be able to pull up your friends lists in-game with a rightward tap on the d-pad and jump into online games just as easily. Although Xbox 360's integration tends to make friends lists fairly easy to navigate, the feature should be a godsend for PS3 owners, since friends list integration tends to come on a game-by-game basis on that console. "

LSDARBY5993d ago

Cant wait to try the demo out.

lockload5993d ago

Yesthe demo is single player and multiplayer

MaximusPrime5993d ago

i have a feeling that it is saying 3 hours to "demo day". So i might have to wait 8 hours away for it to be in PSN store. :(

How Burnout Paradise bucked the trend and made open-world racing irresistible

Met with derision from existing Burnout-series fans at the time, Burnout Paradise remains arguably the greatest open-world racing game of all time. Here's why.

I don't know why - and I know I'm probably on my own here - but I liked Takedown more. I think it was just 'different' enough to feel fresh. I also loved the destruction.

On that note, a new Motorstorm would be nice! All that mud, dust and car pieces flying everywhere blew my mind on PS3 - imagine what they could do now.

NJShadow367d ago

I loved Burnout Paradise, but Burnout 3: Takedown will always be the best game in the series, for me. Burnout 3 is arguably the most fun game ever made, with the greatest licensed soundtrack ever.

EazyC367d ago

I played through the remaster quite recently. It's not as good as I remember, but I think a lot of that is because the "open world" thing was still pretty fresh back then.

I do think there's a gap in the market for a game like Burnout. With the new gen they could really make car damage a huge selling point again.

BrainSyphoned367d ago

Paradise gave me open world burnout before I knew it was a thing.

CPTN MITCHELL367d ago

Burnout paradise remastered and original are my favorite, i got the platinum trophy for both games the nighthawk is my favorite car

Einhander1971367d ago

Personally don't give a shit for open world racers. Give me a new Motorstorm, Split second, Outrun.

I think the crash mode should comeback. Tryng to make the most damage was very cool.

camel_toad1017d ago

That mode was so damn fun. Couldn't believe it when they ditched it.

Flewid6381016d ago (Edited 1016d ago )

Agreed.

Flewid6381016d ago (Edited 1016d ago )

Yeah that made for a good time.

Rebel_Scum1017d ago

Burnout 2 should be above 3 imo. The aftertouch takedown mechanic slowed down the gameplay too much in 3.

Flewid6381016d ago

That's the mechanic that made me enjoy Burnout 3 over the others. It wasn't until they introduced it that I considered the series any good.

Chocoburger1016d ago

I love Takedown, Revenge, and Paradise. Dominator was okay, but it clearly felt like a B-tier game.

After playing those awesome games, I went back to try out part 1 and it was rough. I didn't like the controls (whereas the others felt perfect to me), the elevator music was generic and not enjoyable to listen to.

Finally the game's difficulty was extremely high. I could beat all single player races in Takedown, Revenge, Paradise, Dominator, but could not get first place in the very first race for the first Burnout game. It demands perfection and one slight mistake is all it takes to lose. I have yet to play part 2, but I'm hoping it's more like part 3 than part 1.

ChasterMies1016d ago

Burnout Takedown is my favorite racing game of all time. My wife was addicted to crash mode.

Xenial1016d ago

As soon as I saw Burnout 3: Takedown at #1, I knew the list was legit. lol

Its long long overdue but the problem is its just not a big money spinner. Thats why EA ditched it. Alex Ward has gone his own way with Three Fields Entertainment & made Dangerous Driving but its very low budget.

LucasRuinedChildhood1145d ago

Each game gets closer and closer to being good. It's kind of painful how close they are. haha. I hope Dangerous Driving 2 being open world isn't too ambitious for them and it's a polished, fun 7.5-8/10.

roadkillers1145d ago

Maybe not, but if a quality title in the reigns released now days...People do pay more attention to reviews comparitively

BrainSyphoned1145d ago

Burnout with real life car mechanic costs sounds about right if you want EA to go for it.

isarai1145d ago

Here's the thing, EA is sitting on so many great IPs i would like to return, but at the same thing i feel like modern EA would find a way to ruin it. Besides Respawn, EA hasn't dropped anything good for almost 2 generations IMO.

LucasRuinedChildhood1145d ago

"almost 2 generations" What? Are you talking about the PS3 and the 360?

I agree with the general sentiment that their catalogue of games since the PS4/XB1 has been comparatively terrible to what they used to do though.

andy851145d ago

Absolutely loved these games back in the day. Paradise was good too but didn't quite have the feel of the old games
