Xbox 360: dead in Japan?

As sales slump and its last great exclusive goes multiplatform, retailers confirm plans to phase out Microsoft's console.

The Xbox 360's life appears to be coming to an end in Japan, with hardware sales falling, retailers beginning to turn their back on the console, and the system's last high-profile Japanese exclusive headed to PlayStation 3.

In June, Microsoft announced that Japanese Xbox 360 sales had finally passed 1.5 million units since the system's release in 2005, but that should not be taken as a sign that its fortunes are improving. Media Create data for the year to date puts Xbox 360 hardware sales at just 72,721 units, a drop of 46.7 per cent on the same period last year. Sales of its rival, Sony's PlayStation 3, have also fallen year on year, but only by 17.1 per cent, to 735,637 units.

Last Xbox employee left in Japan, you want to turn out the lights when you leave?

darthv724643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

you know they will try again with xbox 3 or 720 or whatever its called. MS actually had a chance but chose not to fully embrace the quirky nature of the gaming culture.

Instead, thinking that western titles would win them over like they do elsewhere. No doubt that overall they have dome remarkably well on their 2nd system. Perhaps the 3rd time will be the charm.

I hold no animosity towards Sony or MS or nintendo so I say let them keep trying to outdo themselves along with each other. So long as we the gamers are getting great games out of it that is what should matter most.

Sales may go flat but MS wont pull out despite what many would love to read. To give up is seen as a far worse and disrespectful than dieing honorably in battle.

@tester...yeah they "did". From what i can recall, when they would get a bit of sales momentum from JP type games is when they would try a few western ones and sales would drop again. Never really giving them the opportunity to grow.

MS should not have released any western games there. Or if they did.....very slowly to try and build the anticipation and demand. It is like that old phrase. What works for one is not the same as what work for another. Or something like that.

SuperLupe4643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

Nah I hope MS dont try to japanize the xbox next gen. Without Japan they are still doing great and selling on par with the PS3. Just goes to show where the real money is (hint: USA + EU).

They dont need Japan to beat Sony this gen, actual sales prove it.

testerg354643d ago

darthv72, I thought MS tried their hardest to win over Japan. 360 had more jrpgs than PS3s for a while and 360 had weird titles like Idol Master...

Lyr1c4643d ago

@SuperLupe

Selling on par......

You're kidding right?

The 360 had one hell of a head start, huge system failure epidemic that increased overall sales, and Sony still surpassed them in WW sales......

Do you really believe its marketing or could there possibly be a genuine interest in the platform? Just because one market has a different selling trend than another is no reason to label it as such. That is the beauty of an open market.

You would rather call someone a sheep for them purchasing something that differs from your own? I'd call that consumers choice. Marketing or not, people buy what they want and should not be held in ridicule if they dont meet with someone elses approval.

Pixel_Enemy4643d ago

I want to live in a country where there is no xbox..

Clarence4643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

No I think the 360 failure in Japan had to do with RROD. Quality is very important in Japan.
Also the 360 is known for FPS and Japanese people don't seem to care much for them like we do here in the West. The Halo and Gears brand are really weak in Japan.

Those 2 games are what put the 360 on the map.

As far games go the 360 had more jrpg than the PS3 at one time in Japan.

jetlian4643d ago

failed in japan just cause Japanese don't want an American system. They had the rpgs and it still didn't make a difference.

badz1494643d ago

"retailers confirm plans to phase out Microsoft's console."

that's pretty assuring right there but why is there a "?" mark in the title? they think consoles can be sold via digital distribution or something?

LOL.. darkride66, no long analysis of why MS failed? You always seem to write long responses of why Kinect is no good, why MS is not really selling all that well, or how well Sony is doing.

EVILDEAD3604643d ago

Bookmarked just to laugh at Darkride's blatant trolling..

The funny part is if this was a Sony sales slump article he would be there tking about Microsoft too.

On topic..I love the fact that Microsoft still attempts Japan even though no American console will ever dominate in the land of the rising sun.

At the end of the day though, the Japanese won't even buy western games from Sony as well.

As long as developers still develop for the 360, that is all that matters.

DigitalRaptor4643d ago

Making a slight or a joke is considered trolling these days? Wow.

TBM4643d ago

The Microsoft brand was dead with the release of the first xbox all those years ago. They should just get out of that region while the getting is good. They should just focus on america, and england since that's where most of their sales come from anyway.

kreate4643d ago

microsoft brand is alive and healthy in japan.

most japanese use windows. msn. microsoft word. etc.
most japanese retailers sell microsoft products. such as pc accessories and overpriced software.

when ppl talk about "microsoft should just focus on NA and England"
is just plain stupidity.

would u want to sell ur products to a group of ppl who already has ur products?
or would u want to sell ur products to a group of ppl who doesnt hav any of ur products?

japan has the 2nd largest economy in the world.
3rd richest country in the world.
population of 120-130 million.

with gaming culture being more socially acceptable in japan than anywhere else in the world. japan is a very important market and thats the reason wny microsoft wants to penetrate it.

the thing about japan is .... ' halo/gears/xbox live/lots of advertisement' strategy doesnt work in japan like it does in america.

microsoft probably is re-strategizing their plans so their next console will succeed in japan.

TBM4643d ago

@kreate

hey you keep up hope that their next system succeed because everyone here already knows that it won't happen. also i wasnt talking about the windows and the other stuff you mentioned i started only their game systems.

microsoft can restrategize all they want but we all know their next console release in japan probably wont sell more than what the 360 did if theyre that lucky.

kreate4643d ago

oh ok.

so microsoft should stick with NA and England.......

gamingdroid4643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

MS has repeatedly re-iterated that Japan is important to them, so I doubt they will pull out. At 1.5 million Xbox users, it is likely more than in some European countries they have a presence in. In that view then Japan is even more important!

It only appears bad, because you compare it to the size of the market and how well the competition is doing.

As long as Japan stays number two in game development in the world, MS ain't pulling out. They need the Japanese support.

Xbox never had a chance in Japan M$ knows that and so doesn't there hardcore fans.

LadyGaga4643d ago

You'd think a country so obsessed with American culture would adopt the American console.

Guess they're more racist than they think we are.

Report suggests the UK is a console nation

Bit-Tech: Perhaps the biggest surprise was that the tide of console gamers is a cultural phenomenon which does not appear to cross every border. According to NPD's research, while the UK has the highest incidence of console usage out of all the markets analysed Germany boasts the biggest number of PC gamers.

France, meanwhile, is clinging on to dedicated hand-held consoles like the Nintendo 3DS and Sony PlayStation Portable at a time when NPD's analysis shows that gamers in most other nations have ditched theirs in favour of getting their portable gaming fixes on smartphones and tablets.

"when NPD's analysis shows that gamers in most other nations have ditched theirs in favour of getting their portable gaming fixes on smartphones and tablets."

you mean like japan, europe or the US where the 3ds is breaking records?

People are ditching the 3DS so fast in the US, 3ds sales have doubled over ds first year sales and the year isnt even over.

No source, no truth

who approved this garbage?

but 250 million global online PC Gamers say other wise.

Everyone with a Gaming PC can play Wii Games so does that mean the world is a Wii Nation?

I think people just enjoy Games and it really doesn't matter the platform.

Console Nation, PC Universe, iPhone Realm, doesn't matter just enjoy your Games.

StayStatic4453d ago (Edited 4453d ago )

Considering most PC Gamers will own 1 or more consoles , declaring the UK as a "console nation" is complete and utter bollox.

kevnb4453d ago (Edited 4453d ago )

owning a console and playing the occasional game once in a blue moon doesnt make you a console gamer. Just like owning a pc and maybe playing some random flash game doesnt make you a pc gamer. Alot of pc gamers bought ps3s, its a blu-ray player and media hub that plays games.

guitar_nerd_234453d ago

I'm from the UK and game on nearly every platform I can think of.

But yes in general I'm more thumbs than fingers when It comes to my games.

Paul Christoforo to Write a Book Based on the Ocean Marketing Debacle

Remember in December of last year when Paul Christoforo became the pariah of the internet? Ocean Marketing was at the center of a scandal that took the internet by storm after Christoforo exchanged rude, angry emails with a customer of Avenge Controllers, for whom Christoforo was providing customer service. I recently had the chance to speak with Paul about the whole ordeal and what his life has been like since.

That is a very nice looking xbox 360.

gamingdroid4466d ago

That does look sick and the sound is even more awesome. Too bad the darn Xbox 360 is so expensive still.

LX-General-Kaos4466d ago

When the Wii U drops the xbox prices will take a serious nose dive. Hopefully they still have that particular one floating around retail.
