Combat Of Giants is a series that has been many gamers’ guilty pleasure since it debuted in 2008. Offering epic battles between dinosaurs, dragons and mutant insects, the series has so far enjoyed seven instalments through DS and DSiWare. The latest addition to the franchise is Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D which comes to the ground-breaking 3DS handheld console.

Maybe, somewhere in my subconscious I knew this and this is part of the reason why so many of these games lingered on my shelf for so long, collecting dust and dirty looks. Yet, when I purchased my 3DS last holiday season and was eagerly looking for games to play on it, I gave in to a Best Buy deal of the day that netted me Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D for $5. At that price, how bad could it be?

As one of the Nintendo 3DS 'launch window' titles Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D carries a certain amount of expectation upon its shoulders. There has been little thus far to convince gamers that the Nintendo 3DS system won’t go the same way as the original Nintendo DS: catering for the core demographic at first and slowly diluting the software catalogue with a range of Touch Generations! titles and fewer of their leading franchises, and so many had been hopeful that Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D would fill a void. It doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel to achieve such a goal, simply present an inviting concept and interesting gameplay.
GameSpot writes: "If you thought a fighting game in which you play as mighty dinosaurs couldn't possibly be a tedious slog, brace yourself for bad news. Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D is a tedious slog padded out with recycled content. The fights are repetitive and unchallenging, linked by short jogs down corridors of jungle or rock. The visuals, at least, are appealing, enlivened by stereoscopic depth, and there's modest fun to be had in naming and customizing your chosen dinosaur, if a purple T. rex with stars on it gives you a giggle. But you won't be pitting Barney against your friend's creations; this is a multiplayer-free affair, with only item trading to show for the 3DS's wireless connectivity".
I knew there was a reason why this is 20 bucks at target.
