The Competition Commission today published a statement of issues as part of its investigation into GAME's acquisition of Gamestation. The inquiry group has identified six ways in which the merger would lead to a 'substantial lessening of competition'. The statement suggests that at the very worst, a GAME/Gamestation merger could mean customers face an increase in the price of hardware and software products, as well as reductions in the number of promotions, the range of gaming software, the quality of service and innovation by retailers and suppliers.
As of right now, there are no monopolies in the games industry, and for the sake of the medium as a whole, they never should either.
