Games That Nobody Plays Anymore: Bioshock

If you're still undecided about this title, or you are totally just passing it up because you think it might be 'overrated'… hell if even you just touched the demo briefly, or fondled with it a little bit, come back. Fight the urge to play something else, and just finish this. You'll get there in the end and then you'll understand. You'll understand what it means to be a gamer and you'll be proud.

I downloaded the free plasmids they added so it was kind of different.

Bioshock is a great game and im kind of wondering if bioshock 2 will be as good. I was really hopeful, but im not so sure about it anymore.

Its a game for people who love great SP FPS. Alot of people want quick action In a FPS where the biggest decision is which gun to use.

Bioshock isnt the most complicated FPS(like Deus Ex or Fallout 3) but, for me, it strikes a great balance between action and RPG FPS. I like any kind of FPS as long as it is executed well and bioshock was great for me because of my never ending need of great single player FPS.

Also I notice alot of people who dismiss thegame go on to say they didnt even come close to finishing it.

I give it points for not being a FPS thats NOT about a war, aliens, or zombies.

and loved it. Very very immmersive and creepy. The creepiest part about the game is the sound. Hearing an enemy crying for help or singing a hymm about Jesus was creepier than actually fighting them. Especially if you play with a surround sound system. At one point a guy was banging on a door and demanding to be let inside. I remember trying to creep past him and when he saw me I almost jumped out of my seat.

That said I have no desire to go back to Rapture. Highest compliment I can pay a horror/suspense game is me saying I'm too creeped out to play it again. Sorta like Silent Hill 2 in that regard. Playing through it once at night with all the lights off was enough.

Edit: Not to nitpick but is Fallout 3 a FPS? Sure you can play it like that but you won't do that for long unless you want to waste ammo because the enemy animations are too jerky...at least on the consoles.

I love Bioshock - the gameplay, art style, story, and social commentary are all brilliant. I'm still amazed at how they were able to successfully pull off criticism of both individualism and collectivism throughout the course of the storyline. Such a great game.

Bioshock was a great title for me. Interesting premise, intelligent themes, thoughtful combat. It's a great combination of diverse elements and about the only FPS I've richly enjoyed in some time now both as a gamer and a scholar.

People should play it if they haven't. If it gets your average FPSer to embrace more than the space marine in an "epic" war to save the country/planet/galaxy, great.

I played Bioshock in 1 sitting, lasted about 6 hours... Never went back to rapture again. No need or desire to ever do it again, either. I played the Pc version with settings maxed out and to me, honestly, not impressed. The game was average at best. I have no interest in a follow up to it, either.

I was playing bioshock and about 3hours into the game it asked me to find ingredients for something. I just looked for a while and couldn't find anything so i said f*** this and traded it in lol.

It really wasnt tha good except for the bit when i repeatedly splatted plasmids on a big daddys ass haha

My problem with bioshock is that it was far better when it was called "system shock 1 and 2 ..." . But then again , even if it's ok for most gamer to not remember it , or know about it , i wonder about those so called journalist ... who acted as if Bioshock was anything new and groundbreaking .

Dont get me wrong it was a great game , but not the novelty the press tried to make it looks like .

Something tells me Bioshock 2 will have a downfall , and not live up to expectations and hype that it shouldnt have gotten in the first place .

Yeah Baka-aka while you are right, System Shock lacked the mass appeal of Bio. Only a certain section of PC gamers are familiar with it anyways.

System Shock may be Goldeneye to Bioshock being like Perfect Dark. But if no one played Goldeneye Perfect Dark would have all the praise wouldn't it?

HOW! I finished my second playthrough of BioShock about a month ago and last week I brought BioShock for PC but I'm probably going to get a controller because it's so hard to used to using a keyboard! 1000+ hours of using a joystick VS 20 hours of using a keyboard! Those 20 hours were L4D baby!!!!!! It's a good game! And you have every reason to play it more than once! It's a long game anyway!

Ive used mouse keyboard for 10 years and I have better aim on it but using wasd to move hurts my hands after awhile. Controllers are more comfortable.

The truth is, I find Bioshock to be completely underwhelming and boring. Yes, it's BORING. The story was so uninteresting that halfway through I just wanted everybody(even the player character) to just DIE.

I've heard people rave about how it was "the best game of 2007", and after finishing the game I'd have to ask, "ARE THEY ON CRACK?". Crysis, STALKER and COD4 were a million miles better than this in 2007.

the hacking near the end was the most annoying thing in the game.

by the time you reveal 3 tiles you lose or you see you've gone the wrong way and the only way you could've won is to have switched the first tile.

AND THEN once you've opened the safe you see that all you got was $50 and some eve.

Honestly, to all the people here that didn't like Bioshock, even if it sounds elitist, they are don't know sh!t about videogames and can't appreciate a masterpiece.
Oh and most of them filled the stereotype exactly as I thought, with comments like "oh that game suked not enough action very boring lolz cod rulez it has moar guns and explosions!!!11!

Actually I loved this game for the first hour or two but I felt like it turned into a bit of a nooby shooter as it went on. All the spooky little events and atmospheric creeping around was amazing but those moments seemed to get less and less frequent as the game went on and rather than creeping around a corner with a revolver waiting for a Splicer or two I felt like I was spending way too much time wailing on big robots with shotguns and so on.

Plus, as brilliant a place as rapture was it started to get miserable and depressing as it went on. There wasn't enough creepy 20's areas and too many dark dank dirty areas like the obligatory depressing sewer level in most other games. I mean, who really wants a level set in a goddamn farmer's market?? Add to that the fact that the sequel is set in the same place, I just can't take any more of it.

Also, as amazing as the plot was. It should have ended with Andrew Ryan. After that part I knew I'd seen the best moment of the game and the rest just felt like a real slog.

there is a difference between elitist and being a bandwagon patsy. The media went on and on about how great it was.

It wasn't at least for me. I've been gaming since the commadore. It is an overrated game.

The animations felt like i was playing oblivion(the plasmids might as well have been magic spells/animations look pretty much the same.)

The hacking was a simple puzzle game that was the same every time, when you spend half the game playing same water puzzle it gets quite annoying.

The big daddies lost thier novelty the second time you beat them.

Lets be honest it had good graphics at the time and now without being blinded by them it no longer holds its appeal.

The environment was the only thing that was original but does that mean you have to spend paragraphs stating how great it was.

And the story was ruined by the GENERIC Good/Bad endings

I think that both of your comments reflect a major issue that causes some games like Fable, Mass Effect, Killzone2,Infamous, and several others to not achieve the same level of success that say a Halo or COD game might be able to. A majority of gamers don't have the patience or tolerance to try and push through a difficult game no matter how wonderfully crafted it is. If the fun factor isn't easily obtainable as in the player doesn't have to actually immerse himself in the environment the game presents then he/she will pass on the game for swifter gratification. Its a damn shame too because games like Fallout3 get passed up for such shallow experiences like a Halo, or COD.

i would put Resistance in there, Tell me you saw the ending of Resistance 2 and it was generic (you'll be a liar). Although teh boss battle sucked bad no matter what you say they took no skill and were a letdown compared to the awesome battles in R1

I think the only reason why some aren't playing it is because Bioshock isn't shoot, grenade, and melee and takes a little more RPG skill than their used to.

I don't understand why people think Bioshock was a great game. I'm glad to be done with it. It pissed me off when I beat it on hard and did not get the achievement, even though it was incredibly easy to beat on hard. I didn't have trouble killing even one big daddy. The story was moderately interesting, but ultimately just a linear story that pretends to have some kind of choice involved. It is NOT an RPG. I hate when people say it has RPG elements; it's got items, big deal. That doesn't make it an RPG.

I don't like Bioshock, but not because I'm some shallow gamer who likes instant gratification. I love RPGs, and games with deep stories, but Bioshock simply doesn't fit the bill. It is every bit a shallow game, and it really might as well be Halo. A non-shallow game should involve more decisions than shoot this gun or shoot that gun. Sure, you can decide whether to kill or spare the little girls, but who cares? You get rewarded either way (I chose the evil way). Bioshock doesn't test the mind, it only tests your patience (waiting for it to get interesting).

If I were to play it again, it would at least have to be a little challenging.

This game is so well crafted most people will never understand and I wouldn't expect anything less as the masses are of a lower intelligence.
