VICE:
Doing these Retro Runback pieces on GameCube games always makes me feel old. I mean, at this point, it’s been over 20 years since its release. So, it counts as retro — it just hurts to acknowledge it. This time around, it’s one of my favourite racing games of all time: Need for Speed Underground 2.
Once the king of street racing games, has the Need for Speed franchise finally run out of gas?
Yes, but good news! Tokyo Xtreme racer is coming back! Early access release January 20th and full release later in the year.
Nfs has been giving us the same mechanics over and over again. They have recently been leaning more into street racing because of popular demand from the fans, but they aren't quite there yet.
I would suggest they simply remake the NFS underground series, and in 2005, most wanted and go from there after getting the baseline of what the fans want.
"Need for Speed has always been too ahead of its time." An in-depth development team interview, covering 30 years of NfS.
Out of 30 years Ea Canada made all PS1 versions they were New and Exciting then Blackbox Studio took over all were Fantastic.
Criterion Games took over Every last title is and was Junk including Unbound.
WTMG's Leo Faria: "Need for Speed Underground 2 may have aged a bit in terms of its controls or the simplicity of its open world, but it’s still one hell of an entertaining racing game, even twenty years later. Its progression system, “2000s as hell” imagery (“yo dawg, let me send you an SMS via my Nokia”), amazing soundtrack… it’s all beautiful. It’s a really important staple for the racing game genre, being the game which popularized open world exploration and racing in the same package. Not a single Need for Speed game has managed to reach the same degree of importance and relevance to this day, and for a reason. This is just the pinnacle of the series, and a game worth revisiting if you have the means to do so."
There may be racing games that have surpassed this one over the years, but I never had more fun with a racing game than I did with Underground 2.
One of the best.
