Sony Needs to Figure Out PlayStation VR 2

PlayStation's VR headset won't succeed if Sony doesn't help it.

Sorry, buddy. Story after story on N4G keeps showing games coming to PSVR2. Quoting old Bloomberg rumors about the stop in production doesn't make it so.

It's rumored that there will be PC support, I think that's a great direction but has it been confirmed.

So YOU don't use your PSVR2. OK. That doesn't mean anything for the rest of us who do. What are they doing wrong?

A pause is a temporary thing to sell through existing stock. A price drop and the announcement of a couple of key exclusives could really get things rolling again.

Can't wait to check in sometime in the near future and see if they hold the same die hard view that the PSVR2 is a first party supported platform.

The truth of the matter is this has been a flop and it sucks because VR is a game changer and I can see Sony not supporting this next-gen.

As much as YOU want to be in DENIAL about this piece of news by playing the rumor card I could point out that there's a reason why main media sites like IGN, Gamestop, etc are reporting Bloomberg articles because they are a reputable media conglomerates around the world and scrutinized by many press ethical group.

If the story was false then why a big company like Sony who's not afraid to press charges didn't threaten Blooberg with a case of slander?

There aren’t very many of “us” who buy the headset. That means not many devs have a lot of incentive to dump a lot of money into developing on it. Hence why we get stupid games for it.

Sales are only estimates until figures come out and can also be figured out doing basic deductive math. Not hard. It was fine when every one was doing that to make fun of Xbox, right?

Sony happily blasts out ps5 numbers all day, and barely ever mentions psvr2. That should say something. It’s the most expensive and least supported peripheral Sony offers right now.

I think part of the issue will be no exclusives. Now that Sony has basically abandoned exclusive games (god knows why) PSVR2 on PC all but confirms that there will never be a reason to buy it over a Quest 3 much to my disappointment.

I disagree. Quest 3 has mediocre LCD displays, no HDR brightness, limited FOV and haptics that aren’t even in the same league. PSVR2 could be the best PCVR headset under $500 once support is fully added. Based on what iVRy has been posting they are updating the firmware a lot lately and more PC plug-and-play access is being opened up on the device. It’s a no brainer for PCVR even compared against Quest 2/3. Quality matters in VR as much as content for the immersion. PC will drive PSVR2 to new heights.

PlayStation just needed to make at least 10 AAA games that are exclusive to PSVR 2 and advertise it which Sony doesn't realize can be done now by just sponsoring streamers on twitch and youtube with the product

Unfortunately Sony's current direction means no more exclusives as they have all gone to PC along with this headset. I can't have been the only person that seen this strategy as self harm to their business. No exclusives means less people will be around to buy your console or your VR headset platform.

It undersold (Sony not releasing figures after the disappointing first wave speaks volumes) then closed down one of their VR studios - they do not care about the platform yet people live in denial.

Sony should throw some money Valve's way and get Half-Life: Alyx on the PSVR2

They already threw them plenty of money by giving away all their console exclusives that Valve made profit on by being the platform holder. Valve said thank you very much we'll keep Half Life: Alyx and your games on our rival device Steam Deck and Sony is left looking like an idiot. Platform holder is king, however Sony seem hell bent on self destruction and want to become EA or Ubisoft.

Valve are not interested in consoles, well Gabe Newell isn't, they would hand it to someone else to port the game over if they were going to do that.

Valve making a percentage off Sony's sales for the privilege of using their store, isn't equivalent to Sony throwing money their way to get one of their games on their platform.

I dont play PSVR2 so much as I was PSVR1. Main reason for me is, that there is no backward compatibility (there is left lot of great games I played from time to time - its like new platform). Second reason is there is less social games and demos. Everytime somebody came to me I loaded up PSVR1 demos (shark etc...). Now what? GT7? Resident evil?

When it comes to the last gen not being compatible it just sounds like a cop out. I don't get how there couldn't have been a console level software layer that takes the 3D coordinates that the new controllers provide and convert it to the equivalent old move values. Both of them were providing some form of cartesian geometry either via the glowing balls and the camera or by the internal sensors and IR lights otherwise there'd be no way to track your position. I get that it's a lot to ask individual devs to go back to work on them (especially as they may have shut down now) but it seems silly to think that there's no method of translation/emulation.

It has been said many times before, you only need one reason to not buy an expensive VR headset and the PSVR2 gives you many reasons irrespective of someone being a VR fan or not. I get that people are passionate about VR but it was obvious before PSVR2 launch this wasn't going to end well. The writing was on the wall in the final years of PSVR1. VR in general has a game problem and various headsets have their pros and cons. It felt like Sony had put PSVR2 in development before the writing was on the wall with VR and they just had to follow through with the product to see if it would stick. That explains the lack of passion behind it.

It's a fantastic product. Play Resident Evil 8 and 4 remake. Also Epic Roller Coasters is an experience.

I see some people are in denial. I was rolling my eyes when people here where like ... "Vita is not dead. 3 months ago that one indie came out!"
Guess what I bet they didn't have the system. I did. And support looked grim relatively quickly. It looks like we have another Vita on our hands.

Yeah, it isn't hard even as a fan to see when the writing is on the wall for a product. Not sure where the denial comes from; wishing something to succeed isn't going to magically make it happen. I bought a PSVR1 and they couldn't even replicate the best times that headset had because all the AAA studios abandoned it at the end of its lifespan and didn't sign up for the sequel.

The problem with PSVR2 is the same one that I mentioned before the launch of the headset and it's the lack of a mission statement or direction for the device.

On one hand, you have Sony presenting the PSVR2 as a premium device for a high-end VR experience, and on the other hand you have Shuhei Yoshida telling ppl to keep their hopes in check regarding AAA experience because small indies games will make the bulk of PSVR2 library.

Now here's what Sony has to do to salvage this at a reasonable cost.
1) Find ways to port some old PSVR exclusives like Blood & Truth, Astrobot, The Persistence, etc.
2) Hire ppl to make VR mode of some old PS4 games that could translate to VR like: TLOU2, Daysgone
3) Have a damn theater mode that could work with Sony's movie subscription service

Speaking of theatre mode, with the original PSVR on PS4, you could watch standard or VR videos from a USB stick, using the Media Player, on PSVR2 you can't even do that.

I don't think i've ever seen Sony launch any kind of hardware with such lackluster support, afaik they are developing 0 games internally for the platform and yet asking $600 for the device, how on earth they expect it to sell? It's possibly the most incredible VR hardware ever developed, and nothing barely takes advantage of it.

The was way PSVR fans defend the system reminds of how Vita fans (like me) defended that system back in the day. The uncomfortable truth is that PSVR2 is very reminiscent of the vita…great hardware, a core of die hard fans but a lack of mass market uptake and no support from Sony. Do the same thing twice Sony and you will get the same result.

I own one and forgot about it. Zero interest in almost every title that comes out. After the initial rush of gt7 and a cool horizon side story game that felt more like a tech demo, I’m out. It doesn’t offer much more than any other vr platform out there. Hell your prob get more use out of a quest 3. It does the same stuff, has mostly the same game library of cartoony silly vr games that are just rehashes of existing vr games, but can also support web based be stuff cus it has a browser too. I truly regret buying this headset.

I have psvr2 and meta quest 3, they have their perks and disadvantages but trying to use a few people on twitter and an enthusiast like Ryan from ign to bring down the platform is wild to me.

Now the spin of a single Bloomberg article to boot to feed a narrative of the platform dying when personally I have entirely to much to play on psvr2 to complain.

But hey… let’s doom and gloom it because it’s fun as per usual. Then we will get articles pandering when it’s gone about how great it was but not having enough “desired support” vs actual support will be the violin playing.

I am so tired of these types of articles, reviewers and what not. Can’t enjoy anything without someone complaining about how they aren’t using the thing they wish they had things to play on. Even thought they actively look away from the games that ARE there

No matter how great it can be now, VR just still isn't ready to be mainstream - cost is too high and there are still too many wires. Throw in motion sickness for some and it needs more time. It's more like Sega CD right now.

I really hope that Sony gives the device PC support because it seems like they just don't care about 1st party VR support. Call of the Mountain is just a tech demo.
