Valve Restricts Over 2500 Accounts After Marking a Negative Review as "Helpful," Warning Buyers

Valve has restricted over 2500 Steam accounts after banning a negative review of "Warlander" that criticized its "shady" anti-cheat system.

banger88799d ago

That's....interesting. I wonder if the Warlander devs/publisher threatened Steam with a lawsuit?

ZycoFox799d ago

Kekw.. Controlling speech now just like the UK does. How lame and oppressive.

Valve's anti cheat is also BS because they won't take the ban off even if your account was hacked and cheated on, because your account is your responsibility, but they give back hacked steam wallet funds.. Nice sense there Valve.

Bobertt798d ago

Valve is going downhill. First by forcing everyone to upgrade Windows for Microsoft or lose all their games and now restricting people from criticizing games in a review.

343_Guilty_Spark798d ago

Windows 7/8 is loaded with vulnerabilities and has reached end of life support. People should upgrade.

Bobertt798d ago (Edited 798d ago )

Doesn't matter if they don't want to support it that shouldn't mean they should stop you from playing all the games you already payed for. All the games i have run fine on Windows 7 and i have no issues with security for over 10 years. That's like if you couldn't play any of your games on your PS4 anymore because Sony moved onto the PS5. This is bad for gamers because whenever Microsoft of Google say they want to push people to buy a new OS regardless of if it's good or not they can get Valve to push all gamers to buy it against their will by saying they will block all your games on the old one.

FinalFantasyFanatic797d ago

@Bobertt,
With the success of the Steam Deck and Proton, you could play most of those games on Linux if you didn't want to upgrade Windows.

FinalFantasyFanatic798d ago

No point supporting those older systems, they already passed their end of life services (e.g. no updates) and I believe that newer versions of Google Chrome, which the Steam Client is based on, isn't supported on those older systems. Anyway, Windows 10 is really good, so there isn't much reason to not upgrade to that version at least (plus it was offered for free for a long time).

Not gunna lie, this news doesn't upset me at all, I'm more upset about what this article talks about, that and how they ban/allow anime/Visual Novels on their store front.

gamerz798d ago

Restricting accounts because they upvoted a review is nonsense.

blackblades798d ago

Yeah, but then they shouldnt upvoted a bias review. I think i got suspended here on n4g for agreeing on a report

Silver_ShadoWolf797d ago

So if they upvoted a positive review, wouldn’t that still be bias? Whole point of the upvote is to agree with likeminded people…

blackblades797d ago (Edited 797d ago )

Lol I said yeah cause I agree with the guy saying banning of accounts that upvoted a review was nonsense and stupid. Upvoting means you agree with them and you wouldve wrote the same thing and got banned as well. Example If your a racist and you said you hate black people and people upvoted shows they are a racist as well like banned those MF to. At the end of day I still think its stupid to banned the ones the upvoted cause technically they didnt right it.

CantThinkOfAUsername798d ago

It's a crappy move from Valve, but restricting accounts from upvoting/rewarding reviews for 30 days... I'm sure those people will survive just fine.

GOULDYBOBS797d ago

Think it's the principle of oppression of free speech

Japan: Nintendo Switch 2 already outsold lifetime sales of Xbox Series X|S and PS5 Digital Edition

Wow… Nintendo is champ in Japan, but the speed of sale is remarkable.

Proves that console gaming isn’t dead yet not by a long shot.

gold_drake2d ago

not surprised, the switch is relatively cheap in japan.

I guess the resistance against always online and digital only consoles is BS. The people have voted with their wallets.

NotoriousWhiz1d 23h ago

What are you talking about? Switch 2 is neither always online nor digital only.

DivineHand1251d 22h ago

Nintendo can literally block your Switch 2 console from accessing their online services at any time. When that happens, it becomes a brick. You won't even be able to play those games that use game key cards that are not installed on the console. Some users who have been blocked tried factory resetting their system, and when they tried to boot it up with a new account, they are stuck.

Speaking of game key cards, the majority of third party publishers have opted to use those instead of loading their full game on those cartridges. Imagine having a library of game key card games and going on a long trip but not being able to play a particular game because you need to connect to Nintendo servers to download the game first. It is not like the old days where you just plug in and play.

Game key cards make sense for large games like GTA, Red Dead, or COD, but I don't see why publishers who have games with sizes less than 32 GB need to use that option.

If you try to mod your system it could get banned from online play like every single system since the ps3 and xbox
